Best / Favorite Adventure ?
Best / Favorite Adventure ?
So, last night's Monday Night Ne'er-do-wells game didn't happen, but we had a great BS session.
One thing that came up was various lists of 'the Best Adventure Module' from different surveys lists, followed by how many good modules came out for Basic v 1e v 2e etc.
I'll admit that I under remembered the number of 2e adventures there were (I was focused on FR setting books etc at that time way back then, and 'remembered' the actual adventure modules as just part of the settings instead of good adventures on their own.)
As we talked about different lists' 'best modules' Some of them I'd played or ran (well more like idea mined instead of straight ran) and loved, some of them I wasn't sure if I'd ever heard of them, and some I'm not sure deserve to be on the lists or are on the list way to highly rated.
With that, I started thinking about what I'd put on a best list, which of course should be what would we here at the TLG Forum Brain Trust put on as our list of the Best adventures.
With it being TLG, of course C&C mods are open to be on the list, but also since C&C is 'the Rosetta Stone of D&D' all other D&D based games adventures could be on the list.
Now for me (and since I'm first I will not hesitate to take the easy low hanging fruit choices out of the gate) :
B2 Keep on the Boarderland - one of the best if not the best intro adventures!
I6 Raveloft - Still remember the first time I played it and the shock of realizing we were trapped, and the BBG was truly as BAD as he was. (and I think this is the only adventure I can say I have played in multiple times and I love it every time. I just hope some day someone finds my paladin turned into a stone statue in the basement and frees him !)
G Series (from the GDQ) I played in the G and part of the D series but was killed and wasn't there to finish the D part, I never played the Q part. That said back in the day I love the Giant series (however, now I hate the idea how dragons were simply pets for the giants .... but that is a change in power of dragons from the nerfed 1e dragons [and demons/devils] to more powerfully respectable monsters they should be)
& from TLG
S4 A Lion in the Ropes - I have never ran or played it but reading it over I really like the idea of it again as a low level intro adventure
So, what would you all add to the list ?

Hmmm, tough one. I'll split them by categories/systems:
AD&D
GDQ Series (Q1 is so-so, but the first time running these was so amazing)
T1-4 (We were playing this when the Challenger crashed)
S3--Lost Caverns of Tsjocanth (Love how the outdoor stuff works & many cool monsters)
B/X
X4-5--Desert Nomads modules (X10 also fun, but a bit unwieldy)
X8--Drums on Fire Mountain
X13--Crown of Ancient Glory
AD&D 2e
A Paladin in Hell
OA 6--Ronin Challenge
OA7--Test of the Samurai
Castles & Crusades
Dungeons of Aufstrag
Shadows of the Halfling Hall
The Druid's Lament

B2 The Keep on the Borderlands
G2 The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl (really the whole G series, but this one in particular)
I7 Baltron's Beacon
S2 White Plume Mountain
Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to play any C&C adventures.

White Plume Mountain is a blast. That was the last module I DMed (in its Hackmaster 4e incarnation) for the best group I ever gamed with back in Indiana. So bummed I moved away from there.

White Plume Mountain is my all-time favorite by a wide margin.

Re: Best / Favorite Adventure ?
Some great picks here.
I know I've never played the OA adventures, which is sad. I LOVE the OA and the Kara-Tur settings. The GM back in the day that ran the OE/KT games we played home brew all his adventures.
Good pick on Halfling Hall & Druid's Lament.
That said, I've never played White Plume Mountain, and since you (and others here) praise it, I'll have to give it a look too !
Hommlet is good, but I love Saltmasrh !
I don't think I've ever played the X desert series. Love Paladin in Hell (go figure as paladin was my preferred class back in the day).Persimmon wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 3:08 amHmmm, tough one. I'll split them by categories/systems:

I would have had to say I'd never played Baltron's Beacon if it wasn't for our game a few years ago. great adventure and if I remember correctly I somehow failed my dex check and fell through the rotted floor (go figure me failing a save ....)

Hey, I've been trying to find you guys but could not on Discord. I left a message on Roll20, but I guess you don't use that gaming forum anymore.

Re: Best / Favorite Adventure ?
I would have to say Temple of Elemental Evil as my #1. I have run it several times and we have always had a blast. I'm running that for my C&C group right now after some heavy edits and personalization.
Past that;
Ravenloft: Man my party learned to fear Strahd
Castle Amber
Desert of Desolation series
Rappan Attuk from Necromancer, man that was a monster.
Bloodstone Pass series. H1-4 I think? They were pretty cool for high level play.

Re: Best / Favorite Adventure ?
I'm finding this question far harder than I thought I would. My favorite adventures really depend upon which group I was running at the time as they all were different in approach. The determination is really more tied to favorite memories made. Still pondering.
