You know, that is a very important distinction that I hadn't identified yet.
IT is better, and more real, when it gets visualized in my mind. 3e and all its rules kept me from doing it because of all the interuptions and rules that you had to keep in mind or look up all the time.
Miniatures and battlemats have always helped me clarify my visualizations, but the 3E rules about facing, etc... ruined that for me as well.
Cool. Thanks for helping me identify that difference.
Same here,3.5 disconnected me from the game.I have yet to play C&C (because the groups I'm in are Anti-D20 groups....sigh).Though I'm playing in a Rolemaster game & for a rule's heavy game, the GM keeps it flowing. He's big on roleplaying,it's 50/50 combat to RP in his game & NO minis .I'd still liked to find a C&C group, even if it's once a month.

I'd cut out the middle man, were it me, and just use the Moldvay/Cook rules.
But I'm hardocre like that.
Seriously, though, I'm actually glad for the retro-clones. Though it's doubtful I'd ever use them (over the original rules in whichever case) it's nice that people recognize them as good rule systems and continue to play them (in a slightly different form) still today.

I go the other way. My C&C has quite a bit of D20 mixed in. I really did like 3e but found it got too complicated at higher levels. Strip skills and add the SIEGE engine to 3e and you get a very playable game.

I'm not, really. I never liked 3E from the get go. Too many rules, too much BS. However, it was the ultra-hot game so I played, and played, and played. Not only did I not like 3E that much, it started grating on me more and more. That's when I stumbled on the TLG guys in the DF forums when C&C was still being developed. I watched the development for about a year because the discussions about it were the kind of game I was looking for. Simple, yet included a few of the rules from 3e that I liked. With the release of the White Box, I was totally hooked... totally!
I always like expanding my role-play experience, but with C&C I found my "zen"-game.

LOL no doubt. I currently own seven of the 1981 boxed sets but would lose my mind if one of my players so much as breathed on it. Thats why i am growing to like LL so much, same feel and free to DL so not to big of a deal to use.

yeah, I agree. I have been trying to get the local gamers at the CoC interested in C&C HMb and now LL.

I never liked 3e so was thrilled when I found C&C. Currently I split my RP time between 4e and Labyrinth Lord and to be honest have started liking LL maybe a bit more than 4e or C&C.
I wasn't too big on 3e and found C&C when I decided to try gaming again after a ten-year lull. However, I am having a blast with my new, rock-solid 4e Eberron group. Even with a good bit of roleplaying, we're averaging 3 encounters in a 3-to-4-hour session.
When we take a break we will either run some of the new WFRP, Saga Edition Star Wars, or C&C. We'll see what page everyone is on once we get through the first couple of modules that I'm using. A break for me as DM would be ok as I'm thinking about running some 1st Edition modules under the 4e rules, and I'd like the time to figure out what should go where and whatnot.
The first couple of modules that I've been running have been Goodman Games 4e stuff (DCC 53 Sellswords of Punjar, and M1 Dragora's Dungeon from the Master Dungeons series) and I cannot speak highly enough about them; particularly the Master Dungeons title.

I played and enjoyed 3.5 and Pathfinder, but I missed my old AD&D games because of the quick resolution of combat and the flavor of the game. Too many mechanics tend to take my mind away from the story and thus negate my escape from the real world. I recently got into C&C and LOVE reading all of the material. I finally CK-ed my first game, a one-on-one game with my cousin, and we both love the way C&C plays. I plan on staying loyal to C&C forever! Even when I try and enjoy other systems, C&C is my go-to fantasy game from now on.

Since some forum necromancy brought this old thread back, I’ll say that it was definitely 3.5 that really pushed me towards C&C. When monster stat blocks started taking up more than a page, that was enough for me. I got back into D&D with 4e, against my better judgment, and regretted it by the end. But our group just doesn’t cotton to C&C, other than Litzen. Too many power gamers / min-maxers. And at least so far 5e is a better system than those last two editions.

GenCon 2009 I was wandering the show floor and saw C&C. I had heard of it but not actually seen it. I circled the booth several times before stopping. Steve pinned me on the floor and took my wallet. He did not take as much money as I had expected, so now I play C&C.

I'm sure he didn't take you for too much, Clovis. The Trolls are all about getting people into the game.

Re: Sticky: C&C cancelled due to WOTC lawsuit.
I spied the 2nd printing C&C Players Handbook at a store in Calgary, Alberta called the Sentry Box. I remember leafing through it and thinking it had a feel similar to what I loved in ad&d. And I was at my wits end with all the munchkinism prevalent in the d20 accessories.
After getting it home, I convinced two buddies (Lord Seurek & Damage Devil) I knew from my younger days to give it a go via SKYPE. I think I CKed an early DCC with a choker monster in it. I remember I had this complex setup whereby I hung a mike from my ceiling so that my wife and I could talk, and had my comp speakers at the other side of the room so we could hear the guys.
After that worked out, I began fishing here for gamers, met Treebore, and through him, met loads o' other players. I've happily ne'er looked back.

First off, Slimy, you evil, evil man. After another long absence from the boards, I saw this headline and briefly plotzed.
But to pick up from the conversation, my first experience with C&C was around 2009 or so, when I happened to see the PH at my (now late and lamented) FLGS, Third Planet in Torrance CA. I looked at it and thought "what's this?" It took me a few visits to finally take the plunge (although some nasty rules arguments thanks to D&D 3.5 helped nudge me towards it) and buy it. A while later, I convinced my group to try it out, and we never looked back. We tried a grand total of one session of D&D 4e, hated it and was back to C&C before you could say "Dirty Bowbe".
What finally killed 3.5 for me was the feats. I remember playing Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk (which IMHO could have been much better if Erik Mona and the other writers weren't constrained by that stupid "skirmish" format foisted upon them, as well as not having an artificial time limit installed in the module) when there was a battle between the players and some Verbeegs in a constrained tunnel. The Verbeegs all had halberds, but by RAW, not the needed feat to use them properly in the tight spaces of the encounter. I reasoned that they would have gained that feat if they had spent any appreciable time in the tunnels, but my players (metagaming, natch) called me on it and it degenerated into an very not fun argument. That was the moment 3.5 died for me.

Perhaps, he signed up here to talk about TLG's d20 Lion in the Ropes or Mortality of Green and not C&C!Buttmonkey wrote:You created your account here in June of 2008, so you must be off by a bit.Pat Payne wrote: my first experience with C&C was around 2009 or so

There is little mercy around here, but I hear that if you by a certain someone some DP then the fine is waved and no punishment given ...

This would have been a shock to the system, just as it was when Gary's products were taken off of the marketplace.
Re: Sticky: C&C cancelled due to WOTC lawsuit.
I was tricked. I guess it is bad on me that I do not put such ass hatery off the table as it concerns WotC.
Re: Sticky: C&C cancelled due to WOTC lawsuit.
I wish WotC WOULD do something this stupid. It would put C&C's name out there ever more and would make for a great counter-suit and income for the Trolls. Any judge with more than one brain cell would fry the plaintiff and their atty's while ruling for Trolls with prejudice.concobar wrote:I was tricked.
