Magic Rings and Stacking

Post by Captain_K »

Do rings of protection stack with armor? Magic armor?
I guess this can be general, what stacks with what in the protection realm?
Is it noted in M&T or CKG?
I have seen how many MIs, but not stacking.

Traditionally, from the source of inspiration, the ring does not stack with magical armor of any kind.

The 4th print M&T (the most "current" one I have available) says the ring merely provides an AC bonus, so they would stack.

C&C apparently has also not included the RoP variants that provide save adjustments

Originally, C&C assumed a maximum AC of 30 but I believe this has long since been abandoned.

So, anyway, you have options but the "official stance" seems to be that, yes, the rings do increase AC.

From M&T 5th printing: The only prohibition is on bracers deflection not stacking with armor and bracers of armor. Then this, "Magic armor bonuses never rise above +5, and stack with regular armor bonuses (and with shield and magic shield enchantment bonuses)."

A 20th level fight has at least a +20 to hit and likely more. But AC is 20 without magic which could get that to 30, still easy to hit.
I will not fool with options from phone.
BUT seems to me magic bonus to AC is for non armor wearers and armor wearers should stick with magic armor.
A thought or fairness belief, not sure it's game true.

Thanks for input. I fixed it, I melted the ring.

I'm trying to avoid an arms race and to hit or AC bloat in some, but weak in others, too much imbalance.

I don't allow things with similar bonuses to stack. Rings of protections don't stack with magical armor, etc.

Our old D&D group played rings of protection as not stacking with armor but they did help with saving throws. C&C has removed that latter part...so yeah. Their only real value is to magic abusers or those without armor.

I let them stack with other non armor forms of protection like cloaks or bracers only.

Yeah, I still use the "original" rules about those things.

In my game, all magic protection can stack. Yep, any and all. For instance, u and your adventurers find 5 rings of pro. Yea, put 'em on and u get +5.
U find 5 rings of +5 pro - yep, you're invincible ~ uh, except when u r in Aufsrag level 15 or 20 whatever. Didja think that the CK will not correct and balance any fabulous magic that u might find???

But, seriously - I do allow anything stacks . . . but I sure don't allow a whole lotta finding of said fabulous magic protection (I mostly assign magic items, but I do like to do rolls outta the M&T and then some enhanced AC pro may happen).
