What gaming stuff are you reading?
Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
My wife backed the TLG KS "Starship Warden" project and now I have those books so I've been looking at them. Very thick main book.
Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
Game materials I've been reading lately:
Advanced Fighting Fantasy (Deluxe Edition)
A Curious Tome of Forgotten Lore (pretty much an OSRIC/AD&D sourcebook)
Kingdoms of Kalamar (a setting sourcebook, came out for 3e but it's systemless)
Fantastic Heroes & WItchery (OSR game, a gem imo)
Codex of Aihrde Expansion: Darkenfold

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
Victory By Any Means, 2nd edition. It is a 4x style sci-fi campaign system that can be played on it's own, or in conjunction with you own miniature game. I'm looking at Battlefleet Gothic or one of the Star Trek games to use with it. Dry read, but I can see some potential for fun.

That is awesome, D.Buttmonkey wrote: ↑Sun Jul 11, 2021 2:33 pmI'm deep diving back into chess (again!). This time I hired a coach to try to see faster improvement and to hold me accountable to make progress. I can't how many times I have started reading a chess book and never picked the book up a second time. I've probably read the first 5-10 pages of a hundred chess books. My new coach has me reading Irving Chernev's "Logical Chess Move by Move" which is a beginners' book that I never would have read on my own given my experience level. But if my coach says I've got fundamental stuff I need to improve, then I'd be an idiot to say I'm too good to read the book they want me to read. Especially since I'm paying for her advice.
Great game. My uncle taught me when I was about 8 and bought me my first chess set – still have it. I was only able to play against him (which was fantastic) as I didn't know anybody who could play the game.
So I've been reading The Queens' Gambit and so far really good. I never did learn chess notation, but got a good idea about it some years ago watching deep blue vs. kasparov online.
Hmm, perhaps it's time for me to find my Chessmaster 7K program.
So, how about some Dragonchess, then?
Hmm, I'm reminded of a Commodore 64 game, where the chess pieces would fight each other a la Star Was in the Falcon.

The game of combat chess you fondly remember, is probably Archon. Played a lot of it with my friend on the C64 as well. Good news is that it is on Steam for $9.99.

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
You're definitely thinking of Archon.
The book version of "The Queen's Gambit" is very good, but the TV show is better in every way except the chess. The book nails the chess stuff, especially the final game. The TV show had to make some compromises with the chess to make it watchable for an audience that is ignorant of chess stuff. Everyone plays quickly (for the most part) in the show and engages in ridiculous amounts of facial expressions at every turn. But everything else in the show is magical. The acting, set design, wardrobe, music, etc. are all fantastic. You don't need to care about chess at all to love the show.

I don't have netflix, but mebbe I can see the series after I finish the book on another network - or I may have to subscribe.
We'll have to deathmatch chess then, sometime in the future . . .

I forgot I had this. Looking for something to fit in as my City of Greyhawk, since I'm not a big fan of 2E's version. How does this one look?

It's a fun little city, but too small for Greyhawk in my opinion. But it has some cool taverns, sewers, a haunted house and a sunken pirate ship to explore. We're actually using it as a stand-in for Saltmarsh as we'll be running the U-series, followed by the Slave Lords series.

Reading Christopher Clark's "A Challenge of Arm's" module. It's decent and has some good ideas in it.
Also just got the Wolfen Empire book from Palladium for the Palladium Fantasy RPG, always loved the wolfen.

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
Frog God was selling the hardcover City of Brass campaign module for 40% off so I snagged it for Swords & Wizardry. And I must say, it's pretty damn good so far. I bought just intending to use the setting for something I was thinking about doing, but it's so cool I may well try to run the campaign as written. Plus, it's just a very nice looking full color, 400 plus page book.

Finally finished "City of Brass" so now I'm about to dive into "Starship Warden." Those two books alone run more than 1000 pages in length.

Was kidding. Star Trek Adventures Players Guide and GM's Guide. So far both are very good
Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
After watching lots of reviews of old MERP products on youtube the past few months and then receiving the pdf of the mechanically awful The One Ring second edition published by Free League, I've decided to dive back into MERP and run a campaign parallel to our C&C games. So I'm the midst of reading the massive Arnor super module. We're also adding a few classes and spells from Rolemaster so I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of those books. I played a ton of MERP back in the 90s so it will be fun to get back to that system for a bit.

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
I've always wanted to use the MERP stuff in a campaign, but have never gotten around to it. I have a few original adventures I ordered back in the early/mid 80's like Angmar and Rangers of the North.Persimmon wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 2:00 amAfter watching lots of reviews of old MERP products on youtube the past few months and then receiving the pdf of the mechanically awful The One Ring second edition published by Free League, I've decided to dive back into MERP and run a campaign parallel to our C&C games. I bought some of the One Ring stuff as well, but it never really caught on.
Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
It's actually not that hard to convert MERP to other systems, including C&C if you're so inclined since it's basically converting d100 to d20. They include conversion guidelines in every module. And their modules have some pretty cool maps & adventures that you can easily port over. For example, I'm using the map of Isengard for the tower fortress of a banshee necromancer queen in my regular C&C campaign. But I also like the different feel of the MERP mechanics with their deadly criticals and all as well as the depth of the world building so we'll be playing a bit of MERP in the coming year in addition to our C&C gaming.

Trying to get through John Nunn's Understanding Chess Move by Move. I hate it with the flame of a thousand suns, but my coach told me to read it. I'm sure I'm building considerable amounts of character.

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
Some miscellaneous stuff that came in a Frog God Games "grab bag" box. I think the best item was the Tome of Horrors which I had previously but it seems to have been updated to 5e so it looks, to my tired eyes, more like AD&D now.
Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
I don't recall if the rule was in the larger MERP rulebook, but it was certainly in the smaller box set for Lord of the Rings: half-orcs gain XP based on the amount of damage they survive. Something almost akin to 1:1 or near that.
Its a fun rule and encourages a different playstyle for half-orcs.
Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
We finally finished creating our party for MERP last week. I've been skimming through old modules looking for suitable beginning adventures. Will likely play mid-late January since I'm out of town for another week.
