Change in recruitment policy:

Core players are defined as: The veterans of the Rappan Athuk campaign who have also played in the Planescape campaign

Henceforth, all new players will be admitted solely from the following sets of people:
- Connections of the core players
- Members of the C&C community in good standing with the core players

This policy will remain in effect until a more stringent process is developed for those not belonging to one of the privileged sets of people. It finally occurs to me that if heartless corporations prepare such processes for work, then I need to make similar preparations for recruiting for group play, too. Based on the amount of free time I've had lately, that is definitely not anytime soon.

Regarding the tone of the Campaign:

Getting Rhuvein or anyone else from the Gnome crew to come back to GMing and run a game is the best option, for the individual(s) concerned.

When it comes to having more levity than not, having more silly conversations with everything in the world than not, etc., I have to admit that my style is a very bad option.

(warning - pontificating commences)

Why is that?

I have an addiction to complicated settings in which most people live in a dense urban environment, most people act in their rational self-interest, have things they want to get done ASAP, have a large spectrum between good and evil, and must make hard decisions about which factions to please. I also find myself naturally drawn towards settings that portray a constant oppressive atmosphere, in which the heroes have to do little scrappy actions here and there to secure a small amount of happiness in their immediate circle. So, my favorite settings and media include Shadowrun, BattleTech, Tactics Ogre, the reboot of Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek Discovery, Onyx Path's Chronicles of Darkness, and of course, the Planescape setting.

Why has so much of the pop-culture zeitgeist turned in these directions? A Song of Ice And Fire / Game of Thrones, Battle Royale, Westworld, Mr. Robot, The Wire, The Hunger Games, Star Wars: Rogue One - the list goes on and on. What is it about the condition that TV-watchers exist in that results in these coming to the fore? There are detailed treatises on this subject. The reductionist interpretation is that the kinds of people who can afford to buy media these days can relate to these grim and oppressive environments more than anything else. By immersing themselves in it, they can feel that their real lives are less bad in comparison. By understanding visceral human pains, they derive more empathy for people outside of their culture.

This zeitgeist is criticized for being nihilistic, cynical, perhaps even eroding away at the foundations of society itself. If everyone just grinds through at a depressed level, nothing will change for the better, everything will eventually change for the worse - or so the critics say. There are some treatises with more details, although I do not have links to them at the moment.

How to turn the current game away from that direction?

What I can offer is one or more of the following:
- One player gets plot points to alter the game. The plot points will be use-them-or-lose-them and refreshed each session. The plot points can do things such as:
--- 1 point -> change an NPC's alignment by one horizontal or vertical step. Three points can be spent to change two NPCs' alignments by a diagonal step.
--- 1 point -> change or create a detail in a scene. For example, if a room is completely empty, then the plot point could add a possibly-important clue to the room.
- The party packs up everything and moves to a northern part of the Outlands, where everything is a lot more good-biased. Or the party moves to a prime material world that has a lot less war going on.
- Force the remaining evil character to change, so that more of the party's time is spent taking quests from the Good Association and the like, and more of the party's time is spent hanging out in good areas.
- A new "Session Zero" - in which most of the characters are rebooted or swapped-out so that more time can be spent on the characters having fun together, and having more synergized backstories. Also ensure that characters' personal quests don't involve attaining evil power or spending too much with evil creatures. In this case, evil characters would definitely be banned.

If these possibilities are not enough - that is perfectly understandable. I hope that the stars align, and the schedules open up, and the savings accounts get fuller, so that the right kind of GM for every type of player can run games more often and more consistently. I have to admit that the main reason the current game started is because another GM stopped, and the magic is never the same from one GM to another.

Regarding Combat Difficulty

Combat difficulty is much more fixable.

After hearing statements like "I like to have a challenge" and seeing enemy groups wipe quickly, I started kicking combat up a lot more notches. At first, this made decently challenging encounters. But now, the notches of difficulty are too many, and so shall be relaxed. I do not want a feeling of hopelessness to set in, and I do not want to bring back the human-wave metagame that was nearly required for Rappan Athuk. I have to consider the possibility that combats that the party runs from are demoralizing to the players, and not just to the characters.

Therefore, I will adjust my mindset from "the party can win if they prepare like this was Shadowrun" to "the party can wipe the enemies if they remember at least half of their abilities and items."

Planescape game is off tonight, due to the combination of:
- The majority of the players will not be present at this session
- The party left off on a potential life-or-death situation that I don't think anybody would want to be handled by the minority of players - regardless of which players those are

I will still be around to chat, maybe try another side thing.
