I've made the same mistake, and will have to redo my skills the same way as a result.

The examples in the book make it a little tricky to figure out how this works because if you don't read the second example on page 35 of the Player's Guidebook under "Skill Learning Modifier" but only go by what the first example says under "Acquiring and Improving Skills", you will most likely make that wrong assumption.

Not surprised, guys. Guess who screwed it up when he was learning too? Yep, as hard as it may be to believe, I got it wrong too.

Don't take this the wrong way ..... but good ! ;)

I was afraid I was stupid, and stupid can't be fixed. However, with you all as jacked up as I was, it shows we were just ignorant ... which isn't good, but is fixable!

Assuming all of us - except for the bounty hunter as he is out of a book so correct - will get a good bump in skills, I think we have some good options as a team.

First, get some bounties to get quick (the way I shot maybe not easy, but at least quick) money. Then hunt or round up some mustang broncs to sell, or something like that. Plus bounce around being law dogs ... or what ever presents itself.

I did some quick reading and other options could be delivering mail and 'goods' to out lying areas, and escorting settlers to their homesteads. Both of those are historically accurate and should be adventurous enough to keep us busy and not bored.

Tree, role playing note. Between being abandoned in 3 Creeks and now, heck even over the next day or 2 as the bounty hunter gets info for the targets we are going after, I'll work as a day laborer at the livery stable cleaning stables and delivering goods around town - figure 50 - 75 cents pay , biscuit and milk for breakfast and beans salt pork and a beer for dinner and sleeping in the hay loft. Plus it will help me make a good contact to sell the horses to in the future and good contacts with the locals.

As for history for a WWI game. What I have dug into is the big picture movements of how and why it happened. How Germany went from Prussia and a minor player at the big boy table, to hating France and Russia and being (almost) friends with England, and setting the stage for "Vielt Politiec" with Germany being at odds with EVERYONE except Austria. The advent of Jingoism, muckraking and yellow journalism, progressivism, nationalism, 100 other isms. However, it would all be filtered through my conservative lenses, so take it with a grain of salt. Also, the names of the players and specific day to day events, not my strong point, so I'd trust your wife as a better source than I - except in the area of combat stuff ... of course.

I finished correcting my character record, skills are correct now. I listed all of my BP expenditures at the bottom for future reference (since some of the future costs will be affected by what I've already spent). I also bought all of my gear, minus food because I'm not sure how you want us to handle the food situation.

I was looking at the errata Kenzer put out, and found out I am STILL doing something wrong when having you guys buy skills. However, I am not sure I like the errata, because it changes the whole scale of things when awarding BP's over the course of a long campaign.
See, Aces and Eights is NOT designed for playing characters long term. A number of things stop working when you run characters for a long enough time. So I may have to just keep things as they are in order for there to NOT be yet another problem I have to over come when I run long term games. How I have you doing it worked fine for a weekly year long campaign, so yeah, lets just stick with how you have it right now.
Not saying we will be playing this for a year, I am just keeping that possibility open by keeping the rules working for such a possibility.

So what is it that we are doing wrong exactly, at least according to Kenzer & Company's latest errata?

In the short Aces and Eights they designed it for? Your to add your attribute score with EVERY purchase, along with a Mastery die roll. In a campaign that covers nearly 10 years like my main game did, you would all be Masters of many trade skills.

For those of you who like to write character journals, I will award 1 additional XP/BP for every 11 full sentences you write, up to a max of 5 points for each sessions write up. Feel free to go beyond that, but I have to cap it.

Uploaded the new Sixth Gun Players Guide for Savage Worlds to your Players Folder. With this one, you have permission to print out one copy for your personal use, if you so desire. They assumed I would print them out and hand them to you, but since we don't even all live in the same state or country....

You know I LOVE writing character journals, unfortunately I'm still swamped at work and have little flex time even at home.

However, we are close to getting another guy at work and if they hire who I hope they do, he is already trained up and even experience in doing hearings in front of the judges, sooooo he will be a huge help right out of the gate. If so, I may even be able to put a post or 2 together , I hope ...

With the errata issue I raise in the above post, I am considering a house rule. For skills that require 8 or more BP to buy each skill advance, rather than do as the errata says, and only for these skills, which are a dozen or so skills, you get to roll 3d4 per skill advance, AFTER the first buy, and they still get to "explode". All other skills will remain being done the same, ignoring the errata. IE you only add your lowest related attribute one time, your first buy. Universal skills you will get your lowest allowed attribute x2 + Mastery die.
Plus your very first buy of each of the "house ruled" skill will still be done as per the book, lowest attribute + Mastery die listed. Only for purchases made after the first will you use the 3D4 instead.

Explosions for max die rolls always applies.

I think this will go a long way to prevent 15 year old kid characters being rolled up with 100% skill ranks in a dozen skills from occurring. Yes, this can be done.

I suppose I could come up with a formula to cap skill ranks versus character age. Like your starting skill percentage cannot be higher than your characters age x2. So if you want a character with a 60% skill rank possible, your character would have to be Age 30.

I would rather just try out the 8 BP, 3d4 idea first.

Again, this is because I am running this "campaign style", not a "few TV episodes" style, which is what Aces and Eights is written for. If I was running this, expecting it to last only 4 or 5 sessions, then I'd be willing to do it completely by the book, errata included.

I had a day that was just jam packed with ideas and inspiration for our game despite it being in the modern world.

After I posted in the SW Victorious thread, I decided I couldn’t be a complete slob all day and had to do something. So, I went down to the barber shop – same barber I got my first hair cut from all those years ago, so it is an old school barber shop – there was an old rancher, 2 farmers, a metal worker, a teacher and me there. ALL the conversations we had would have fit the setting of our game, Price of cows today here vs Tx & Kansas, remembering 4 years ago in the drought when a year old round bale of hay would sell in TX for $75 plus the money needed to truck it down there. The early/late rain the early/late heat, and what it is doing to … insert any crop from around here – soy bean corn melons, maze, and you name it. The metal worker has his own shop including a gas & coal forge, so his home made knives (beautiful work that he did on them too!!!!) the best metal to use, the good places to get / find cheap metal / scrap . Who does good leather work to make the sheaves for his knives and stuff. Then there was the politics and how politics now is following history ( my big input along with the teacher/coach.

After that, my mom called to see what I was doing. Her and 2 of her old grandma friends (one is a full blood Cherokee) needed help … It ended up they needed someone to drive them out to an OLD country church back on snake creek for a church singing. Well, more drive them back in from the woods after it got dark and their old people eyes can’t see good enough at night for those old back country winding roads. I jump at the chance …. Where there is church singing there is food, and where the church is Cherokee that food is Indian fry bread and kettle fried pork!

There at the singing – it was odd to know all the words of the songs by heart, but not understand the words being sung – it was in Cherokee. But around the frying kettles there was more great talk that would fit the game

Who has seen deer on their place, one guy’s mad that the pigs are moving in and chasing the deer off his place … well pigs minus the 2 that were being cooked that is (and yes fresh fried wild hog is AMAZING). Who has seen bob cat, fox and beaver – to trap – and when the first coon hunt will be. Who’s cows/goats are doing good & who is having a rough summer stock wise. How the sheriff needs to go out to so & so’s house to catch them cooking (meth) or growing (weed). But also who has good ‘squeezed corn’ – moon shine – and someone even had a flask in their boot to pass around – to wash the taste of the sweet tea out of your mouth of course … and a swallor or 2 helps digest fried pork don’t you know …

There was stuff there for anything we want to do in the game. The law dog, hunt down those (not cooking back then, but making bad rot gut whisky that will kill who ever drinks it) or the ilk that would fit thieves robbers and the like back in those woods. Or, help those making good shine to get it into town to sell instead of the rot gut stuff. Hunters could be trying to get the food needed for the summer dance, the fall harvest celebration or you name it. Or helping the trapper trip his lines. For trade, moving food on the hoof down south if it is dry there, or up from there to the north after a hard cold winter. Helping the black smith get the good steel he needs to make the knife . Heck, as no one in the party is predigest, and we have a black and an Indian in the party, just getting in with the local communities for something like the singing I was at would be good. the list is endless !

It is. Aces and Eights is the game I run most "realistically". Sure, I use an alternate history to keep people from knowing upcoming history, etc... but the world your characters are living in is as "real world" as we can all stand it being. Which is why, if we collectively decide to, we can add "advanced" rules to our game, etc...

So yes, absolutely take real world experiences and ideas, etc... to help you decide how you want your character to live in this game, because that is what this is. A game of how your character LIVES, versus how it goes about earning its levels. May not seem like an important distinction, but it can be, and hopefully will be.

Heads up!

I am running into Tucson today. A 2 hour drive each way, to pick up some stuff we purchased and most importantly, to change out a tire that is already far too bald to be driving on. I should be home in time, but some times getting tires changed can take far longer than planned, or that tire can blow before we get there.

I'll have my cell phone with me, so should be able to let you know if I am going to get home late via SKYPE. If I am home in time, I will post that fact here. Since I will be home, and able to.

Don't shower on our account ... we can't smell you over the internet, so I won't bother us. Even if we could, it would fit in the ambiance of the game setting and era :D

I just finished mowing and smelled like a sweaty farm hand myself. But it was in time to rinse off, so I understand.

Sure, but we use Discord, since that is far more reliable for people living in OK than SKYPE is. Or maybe, the fix they were supposed to do last week actually improved things, we'll see! Keep an eye on SKYPE, we'll give you the link to our group, but install it in the mean time.

Session 2:

Last night they figured out they really need horses to do what they want to do. Except for bounty hunting. That they may be able to do right here in 3 Creeks. So they spent a couple of days asking around, seeing if anyone had seen any of the 4 bounties Powers came here to try to "collect". On day 3 the Professor got a good source, saying how a woman hanging out at the Pearl Handle Saloon fit the description pretty well, especially that she had all of her teeth, and had a "clip" missing from her nose, on her left nostril.

So Powers and Professor Daughtry headed over to the saloon, while the other 3 kept working at the stables. They needed to earn their daily bread, after all. As they approached they recalled that Wayne, the husband who co owned the saloon with his wife, had told them just the day before no such woman had been around town, let alone in his Saloon.

So they entered the Saloon and quickly saw a woman who fit the warrant description sitting by and listening to the piano man. Powers went over to Wayne at the bar, and ordered two Whiskeys. Paying the $.50 cents he then went over to the woman and put one of the Whiskeys down in front of her. She looked up at him, giving him a look of no interest he knew well. Being a black man, and an ugly one at that, Powers knew he needed to do a lot to overcome his poor looks. So he pulled out a $5 bill and laid it down next to the whiskey he had offered her. She perked up at that.

"You looking for $5 of work from me?", Dolly asked.

"Yes ma'm." Powers answered simply.

"I have a room upstairs where we can talk about the work you want me to do.", Dolly responded, business like.

"Lead the way.", Powers said simply, as he is want to do.

As soon as they got into the room, Dolly started to work at taking off her dress. Powers waited until it looked like her dress would help entangle her, then he struck, grabbing her and attempting to pin her and cover her mouth. The bounty on her was only good if she were caught alive, after all. Unfortunately Dolly slipped from his grasp like a greased eel, and she drew breathe to scream, loudly. So he drew his pistol on her, like greased lightning, pointing it at her. She held her breathe.

"I don't want to kill you, since your bounty is only good if your alive."

"Bounty? What bounty?" Dolly asked, innocently.

"The one on you and your two male friends. Them, I don't need to take alive to collect."

Dolly then tried to convince Powers that he had the wrong woman, but Powers could tell she was lying, and was well aware she was guilty. His sense of justice would soon be fulfilled. Hopefully she would hang, like all law breakers should. He then offered her freedom if she would tell him where the two men, Daniel West and Frank Williams, were. She immediately believed him and told him how they were trying their hand at prospecting, 20 miles out of town on Horse Plain Creek. Powers asked when she expected them back, and she told him in the next 2 or 3 days, unless they found gold. Then they would take however long they needed to get as much of the gold as they could. They knew if they made a strike, that they would have to fight to keep it after they came in with their gold to file a claim.

Powers was satisfied that she was telling him the truth. Then he told Dolly it was time to go see the sheriff. Realizing he had lied to her about letting her go, she started a diatribe about very ugly, lying, no good, black men. Powers let her run with her insults, he had heard it all before, many times. Liar was actually one of the nicer things people had called him, even when he worked down in Texas, as a free man. She would get justice soon enough, and that would certainly shut her up. He met up with the Professor down stairs, and they headed over to Sheriff Slaughter's office.

Powers signed custody over to the Sheriff. The Sheriff told him until the Judge came back on his circuit, at the end of the month, Powers wouldn't be able to get his Bounty, since the Judge had to disperse the bounties. Sheriff's weren't trusted with that kind of money. His only other option was to go up to Bannack City or Helena, and collect his bounty at the court houses there. Of course, he would also need to transport his bounties there to collect. Powers was fine letting Dolly stew here, for now at least. Powers then let the Sheriff know that Dolly had told him the likely location of the two other bounties related to Dolly, and he also showed the warrants to the sheriff. He also told the Sheriff about a murderer who he had also gotten a lead on, and that the man, Wes Stevens, was working as a Trapper in the area. He didn't give the Sheriff too much info, though. It wouldn't be the first time, if Sheriff Slaughter tried to steal his bounties for himself. He then told the Sheriff of his and the Professors intentions, to go with a few more "friends" Powers had made here in the past few days, to go out and get Frank and Daniel, and bring them in, likely dead. The Sheriff gave his approval, commenting on how dead men can't shoot you in the back.

With that Powers and the Professor left, to go talk to their friends about going to find the two outlaws.

Remember, you can earn bonus BP doing a write up from your own PC perspectives. Be sure to play up any Quirks and Flaws your PC has. You can even write about what your character didn't directly participate in, telling how you heard it through the grape vine, or how you were filled in later, etc... Plus I skipped over a fair amount of details, such as getting hired, the other work possibilities, etc... so you can help fill that in as well. Focus on putting together your character personality, motivations, morals, how it all works, or doesn't work, with any Quirks or Flaws your character has. Develop your back history, things like that.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

If not, no worries.

Hot as hell here in the midwest, but I'm trying to chill out a bit

Rhu. 8-)
I kept looking for you on SKYPE for the first half hour. I then got too involved in answering questions, and running the game to keep checking. In two weeks?
Thanks, Tree.

I thought to use my wife's laptop downstairs . . but she wanted it. So when I went upstairs to the compy room, it was so hot I couldn't stand it and never got online.

I have used Discord and like it.

I will try and do a journal entry ... no promise but I'll try.

A question, my character would know but I do not ... When the wanted guy brings in his furs he trapped. Where will he take them.

I assumed it would be the tanner. that was my first gut thought. However, after thinking on it that may be wrong ... the tannery makes cow pig and maybe horse pelts into leather. Good fur would never be treated like that ... I know my dad - when he trapped - did his own tanning of the pelts and the sold them to a fur trader buyer.

My question is who would that be in the town ???? The trader/buyer may be the tanner, it is possible. However, it could just as easily be the dry goods store owner.

As for the plan for the next encounter ... do we bush wack them and kill them out right? Do we surround them and try to get them to give up before we end up killing them ... or do we try and out wit them and capture them ??? I am a fair tracker, and sneaker, and fair at distracting (It was my one charisma skill) . If we go for choice 3 I have an idea on how I could walk into their camp, keep them focused on me and you all set up to catch them. it will be risky (esp for me) but good dice rolls could win the day for us and not have to kill them. But, odds are we'll have to kill them, so is it worth me being the bait for the trap.

The owner of the Dry Goods Store is the correct assumption.

I apologize guys but I'm probably going to miss this week's session. I'm in Chicago all week on vacation and have a family event Monday night. If plans change, then I'll be on at the regular time.

Kayolan is out too, for several months. He got a shift change at work, so won't be running or playing any games until the Fall.
