Re: Snakes
Sticks to Snakes was an awesome spell. I'd be interested in any conversions.
I'm running C&C - B2 Keep on the Borderlands and would like to use some cleric spells. For example, I just asked about chant.

There's always my Stones to Spiders spell if you don't like snakes. Or Leaves to leeches. *WEG*

Hmm ~ fire the arrow, it hits and then turns into the asp which then bites???

Ah. You'll want to use quote marks in that case.Omote wrote:My comment was a veiled attempt at humor. #indianajonesArduin wrote:Because it was one of the oldest clerics spells from recorded history...Omote wrote:Why did it have to be snakes?

O I got it and even smirked a bit when I read it. I just didn't have a chance to reply back and keep the joke going.
Don't let these Cretans around here disparage your jokes !

Sadly, as I've said before, magic and spells are my blind spot, so can't help you much there.
That said, I do remember reading a supplement from early in the 3.e timeframe that had a biblical theme to it. One of the Items in it was Moses' staff. It had the ability to change into a snake (King Cobra I think, but may be wrong) among other effects.
Unfortunately, I can't find my pdf of it ... However, it - or the spell effect - shouldn't be too hard to create. Make it a cleric, druid, or illusionist spell - level ? - that changes a stick of an appropriate size into a snake from the MM. Of course you can scale it to add extra hp/hd, stronger poison, etc etc etc.

Re: Snakes
Sticks To Snakes (Alteration) Reversible
Level: 4 Components: V, S, M Range: 3" Casting Time: 7 segments Duration: 2 rounds/level Saving Throw: None Area of Effect: 1 cubic"
Explanation/Description: By means of this spell the cleric is able to change 1 stick to a snake for each level of experience he or she has attained, i.e. a 9th level cleric can change 9 sticks into 9 snakes. These snakes will attack as commanded by the cleric. There must, of course, be sticks or similar pieces of wood (such as torches, spears, etc.) to turn into snakes. Note that magical items such as staves and spears which are enchanted are not affected by the spell. Only sticks within the area of effect will be changed. The probability of a snake thus changed being venomous is 5% per level of experience of the spell caster, so that there is a 55% probability of any given snake created by the spell being poisonous when sticks are turned to snakes by an 11th level cleric, 60% at 12th level, etc. The effect lasts for 2 melee rounds for each level of experience of the spell caster. The material components of the spell are a small piece of bark and several snake scales. The reverse changes snakes to sticks for the duration appropriate, or it negates the Sticks To Snakes spell according to the level of the cleric countering the spell, i.e. a 10th level cleric casting the reverse spell can turn only 10 snakes back to sticks
Just in case anyone needed the spell.

Read the original spell. It would take about 30 seconds to covert straight across.Captain_K wrote:But seriously, anyone got the spell or for that matter many of the old first ed ones?

Re: Snakes
Thanks guys. Yeah I know one can basically cast spells right out of the 1st edition book (I don't think there are any real changes to the rule, mechanics, etc.).. I was really fishing for the nostalgia end. Someone to say, "Hey, Let me review the old first edition spells and see which "cool" ones got left out for some reason or other and write a short article for Tree and the Doomsday since "new spells" is a significantly requested "want" in the Doomsday. Yeah, I'll do that for Tree!"
