Re: What Board/Card Games Are You Playing?
Naw. None of the games I mentioned are collectible card games. Buy the box, you got all da cards. The slight exception is that there are some promo cards out there that are mondo expensive for both of these games. Other than that, no. Not a CCG.
But the be clear, I am talking about the Deck Building games from Cryptozsoic Games. There are CCG versions of both DC and LOTR, but from other companies.

BTW... does anyone have the VASSAL module for the old SPACE HULK 1st edition game? I have the vassal40k module, but its for the full tabletop game, not Space Hulk.

Played one game of Wizbro's not-classic Avalon Hill's Axis and Allies. To be specific, I refer to the 30-35 dollar version. A friend brought it over. In the later years Hasbro has scimped on some of the components, but it's still a playable game. You can't purchase separate industrial complexes in this version, and the aa gun (a standard for many years) is only available in the 1942 (2nd edition set, as well as Europe and Pacific). The unit chips in the basic set are now cardboard instead of plastic. They have also opted to not give unit placement/purchase price cards. I'm somewhat of a completist with Axis and Allies, but I may forgo the current baseline model. Afterall, I have the larger 1942 (2nd) among others (which typically include some of the aforementioned items). Also...I have been exposing several 20 and 30-somethings to classic Avalon Hill's Circus Maximus. Our four-player games have been met with approval. Can't wait to have 8 players. Horse meat and flipped chariots on the track.

TheMetal1, yep yep. Now I no longer have any use for spider solitaire on my computer
On another note I played 4 games with the Deathwing and Mission Pack 1 Marines. I won all but one game. Some of the new characters are really useful. I havent yet added the Tyranid or Mission Pack 1 cards. I suspect that those will tip the scales back the other way even with the new team members. The Tyranid pack is particularly rough from the looks of it.

We ran Valeros the Fighter and Merisiel the Rogue through Brigandoom! and The Poison Pill from the Perils of the Lost Coast adventure path bringing Pillbug Podiker and Jubrayl Vhiski to justice and winning some cool new loot for the characters. One more adventure to survive in this adventure path and then on to Rise of the Runelords and some better loot and character advancement. A very fun game

Yep, not playing it nearly as often as I'd like, spending so much time playing real RPG games, but its a good alternative way to play an RPG like game.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Re: What Board/Card Games Are You Playing?
Agree that Id rather be doing RPG's as well. For the very small time investment (30 or so minutes per adventure at least so far) Im pretty happy with the card game right now. Also, my better half wont play RPGs but she will do the board/card games so we can both participate or I can solo if desired.

Bang!.
Was fun the first time. Repetitious the second.

Re: What Board/Card Games Are You Playing?
Oh, and we tried Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert. The first, we misread a rule and made the game far too difficult (yet we managed to win once in three tries, so not bad) so that was annoying. In general, the fact the game fights back is interesting. Very strategic yet random. Not my personal style but fun nevertheless.

Forbidden Island was a lot of fun. I havent tried Forbidden Desert yet. I only played FI once but would play again if it hit the table.
If you didnt like Bang! you might try Bang! the dice game instead. Its a bit more streamlined and I find it faster and more fun but then I actually liked the original pretty well too.

Havent played this one in a while. Its an excellent game with a lot of strategy and always fun to play. I would rather do the full board game on tabletop but am too lazy to set up all the components today. Vassal to the rescue.

Re: What Board/Card Games Are You Playing?
There is this place around the corner from work that sells board games every weekend over the summer. Thus far, my wife and I have picked up:
Talisman: The Highland Expansion
Doorways to Adventure VCR Game
The aMAZEing Labyrinth Game
Dr. Seuss Trivia Game
Ghost Stories
and some others my mind is not thinking of right now.
I'm mostly stoked about the VCR game. That's an idea I wish hadn't died out.

What game is this? Looks cool, but I can't see a caption identifying it.Breakdaddy wrote:Havent played this one in a while. Its an excellent game with a lot of strategy and always fun to play. Yes, sorry. Thunderbolt Apache Leader. Very cool (fairly) light strategy game. Dan Versson Games is a little outfit here in the U.S. that cranks out solid games but this is the king of the bunch, IMO. The hardcopy of the game will set you back 60 bucks on ebay and around 90 bucks retail but totally totally worth it. I have had to sleeve my cards on the box just to keep from wearing them out. The Vassal version set me back 30 bucks but I really dont mind at all. They did a great job on the Vassal port. If you can swing it, get the box before it goes out of print again. You can youtube for some good reviews. Marcowargamer's youtube review is what sealed it for me when I first bought in to it.

Re: What Board/Card Games Are You Playing?
I've quickly taken to the Star Wars Miniatures game. I write about it on my blog here:
http://arcanacreations.blogspot.ca/2014 ... tures.html
Lots of fun... And based on the various games I've played, it can be short and quick or VERY LONG. I've calculated that it will typically take about an hour to play a 50 point (per side) game. Twice the points will take twice as long. But damn is it fun!

The kids got me Elder Sign for Fathers Day... so we'll be playing that Sunday afternoon... looks fun, and pretty easy to learn.

I played my first session of Axis & Allies 1942 Second Edition on Friday night. Very fun. We only scratched the surface of the game's nuances. I'm looking forward to more play sessions.

I just got that game, brand new and never used at a yard sale last week for 10 bucks. Let me know what you think... I'm eager to play it but may have trouble getting people who are willing.Buttmonkey wrote:I played my first session of Axis & Allies 1942 Second Edition on Friday night. Very fun. Re: What Board/Card Games Are You Playing?
Just finished our first play through of Elder Sign. We made a few mistakes that we caught as we played, but overall it was pretty easy to learn. It was a lot of fun... took less than 2 hours to complete. Definitely going to play again next weekend.
Re: What Board/Card Games Are You Playing?
Rather than play a RPG this weekend, the group opted to play Munchkin Booty, the card game. I suppose it makes sense, as we were celebrating a birthday. The game seemed to drag on, though. Maybe because we've become used to the rules and know to hold back the real annoying things until someone hits level 9 (or 8, in some cases) or maybe it was because its just not as fun as the other versions... but I was not particularly impressed by it. We do like the other Munchkin variants, or at least some of them. So it was somewhat disappointing.

Re: What Board/Card Games Are You Playing?
I enjoyed it quite a bit. The rules are really dry and I found them very difficult to slog through (it took me 4 or 5 sessions to complete). The game plays much better than it reads. Having seen how the game works in action, I think a reread would be a breeze and learning a new A&A game would probably be pretty easy, too. It's just that first read-thru that is a bitch. The good news is wizards.com has PDFs of all of the current and some of the out of print editions freely available on its website, so your players can get a copy of the rules without having to buy the game.narpet wrote:I just got that game, brand new and never used at a yard sale last week for 10 bucks. Who else has made the mistake of playing Axis and Allies until one side is annihilated instead of ending at the victory conditions? Talk about a boring slog. ugh!

Agreed... I have that as well and I've never been able to get anyone to play... it "scares" them away... not because of the content, but the learning curve...Aergraith wrote:It's definitely a lot easier than Arkham Horror.narpet wrote:Just finished our first play through of Elder Sign.
