Hey folks,

Once again we are going to try to port these forums to the new ones. We have several options, one a simple back up that will cost some change and another a scraping already done. If the first seems unlikely, and I don't know if it is or not, we'll go with the second. But that might entail loss of passwords and such.

Thanks,

Steve

I think everyone is willing take the small inconvenience of having to reset their "stuff" if it means no more "You may already WON!!"
If it comes to the solution 2 then after the scrape there is an import step at that point a new password for each user will get made and emailed to them. All they have to do is log in and change the password and look over their personal settings [things like remaking the signature and added their icon, etc...]

Okay, so they tell us that they will offer the SQL dump in the next few days and allow us to back these forums up.

Hopefully this comes about.

Ug. These guys are being cantankerous.

Latest response to an annoyed board owner (not me): "We have to prioritize our system than anything else. If we cant get our new platform up and running bugs free. Why should we spend our times doing something which has nothing to do with our progress and development? Sorry to say, but dump has never become our priority. Not in the past, not at this moment and not in the future. You may try asking google for database dump of their google group and let me know what kinda answer that you get."

This does not bode well. They have been saying it will available since Oct..

I'm beginning to think we should just start over on the TLG site. Archive these and begin again. Go off world from the Feeabb stuff
Begin Again...a Golden Opportunity.

Contankerous. Great word. I say do whatever makes the most sense and won't tie up all of the Trolls time. Then again, there is a LOT of awesome material on these MBs. It would be a shame to looks some of them. Oh well. Easy come, easy go!

Do it. Start over. Post the new link on here days in advance. Tell everyone, then pull the plug. Reboot. TLG boards v2.0.

IMHO.

It's sad to here but I think deep down you knew they were "inclined" to be like that. It's such a trivial process that the only reason not to provide dumps is to allow lock in.

Go forward you can go the clean slate way or we can figure out how to make the scrape import easier on your side. In theory If you temporarily made my account have enough admin rights to see the email addresses I could run the whole thing off my sever then just hand off a database dump to you. If I set passwords to an unknown default then people would just have to provide there username and email address to get the password reset via the board. It would make it somewhat easier and cut down on the mail bounces that are bound to occur when the import / create password process goes off.

In any case I'm happy to support the effort if you want to make it. Another option might be to just make sure we take a snapshot so some future data miners can have it.

I have been slowly deleting most of my old posts, so feel free to wipe it all away and start fresh. A move off this forum system is a step in the right direction.

The scrape is running, the users are already scraped and in my local copy. I doubt the posts will be done before midnight. It's pulling about 50 topics per minute so will just have to see what it looks like in the morning.

Ditto that! Anything with an Egyptian motif is good in my book.

Let me ask this, can a partial port of selected topics be done?

Not really. The is far less elegant then you'd imagine think duct tape, rubber bands, a diesel engine, and a guy with a sledge hammer. Stuff will be lost, stuff will be broken, but at the end of the day 99% of the topics will end up on the other side..

I understand. I have done a lot of spit and baling wire myself over the years.

If you need someone to do grunt work, I don't mind assisting.

Thanks for the offer, but there is not much to do at this point. Yesterday around 4 I start the insert. It's been running ever since. [I did this on server that is not all that powerful, had thought it through more I would have done this on something with a little more power]

The stats are up to....

Total posts 147069 Total topics 9778 Total members 1978 Our newest member roo_ster

So hopefully it will finish in a few more hours and then I can just create a database dump and pass it off to Steve and Co., obviously there is going to be a gap in the copy and this site. Right now it's 1 day by the time it gets up it will be more.
