Obsidian Portal.

Post by Arazmus »

Anyone else using this? It's pretty good and I have begun to consolidate my 5 notebooks worth of stuff into something vaguely organized.

Oh, I saw that before on the NG forums I think. No, I don't use it. I prefer to keep my campaign stuff to myself, mostly because I don't actually write any of it down.

I know DD was using it for his campaign. I don't know if he still is or not. I checked it out and I think it's pretty dang sweet.

Ive been using ms onenote for organizing my rpg notebooks, but this looks coo. You cant run a game from onenote but I dont need it for that anyhow. Ill prolly give this a spin next chance I get.

I used Obsidian Portal for awhile. It's a pretty nifty deal but I'm horrible at keeping it updated so I let it slide to the wayside.

Someone said you had used it. Are you a CK for your game? If so do you use a laptop when CKing? etc.

Yeah, I'm the Forever CK. Never get to be the player.

I dont bring my laptop to the table. I've dabbled with it in the past but have decided to keep our table top gaming, electronic device free.

I have a campaign on there. My main purpose of having it was for potential players to get an idea of what my home brew world was about, to learn my house rules and to get my ideas organized. I could never find any players, so it just sits and collects dust. I like the site though, it's a breeze to use.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I find Epic Words a bit more user-friendly for computer idiots like me. It has pre-made pages for XP, loot, etc.

Here is my Rappan Athuk campaign: link

Yeah, i know lots of folks use laptops but i just don't enjoy it.

It seems to increase the time spent with the GM staring at a computer screen rather than running a game. The GM doesn't seem to notice because they are busy staring into a puter screen.

I mean what exactly are they looking at?

Maps can be printed...

Monsters are statted out in books...

And the fact that I am asked 30 times every game session about my AC tells me you don't have our pcs statted out so just what the hell is the GM doing with a puter?

I think hitting the print button provides all the supplemental material one needs and keeps the game focused on the table rather than into some electronic gadget.

I'll hang out with my teenage daughter if I want to watch someone stare into an electronic device.

But maybe I am just being biased toward stupid little electronic gadgets and gizmos that simply work to drive a wedge between real human interaction.

If only i had a sledge/war hammer as big as the whole world, only then could I fix the "gadget' problem in society.

Take your video games, take your cell phones your lap tobs, blackberries, droids, ipods, netbooks etc, and throw them in the ocean!

Then try looking someone in the eye and actually using speech to communicate. Sorry for the rant. Just a pet peeve of late...did i say I had a teen daughter?

Just another version of the GM screen in my case...plus I won't have to always be looking for where I jotted down the note I need to move the campaign forward.

I have to have a lot of contingency plans for my players because I keep a very open format. I hate railroading.

I do have a campaign on Obsidian Portal. In fact it's a C&C campaign, but it's on hold right now, 'cause I can't get my damned scanner to work. And Joe, I hear ya on the gadgets. Sometimes I want to throw this brick in the trash.

However, I bookmarked EpicWords and it ain't as flashy, but it looks more my speed.
