Hey Treebore, this setting looks very interesting. I was wondering if you would mind giving a new guy a shot at playing. I have played C&C, D&D for about 6 yrs now and know my way around the game fairly well. I would probably need a little help with character generation but not too much. Let me know if you need another playter.

I am already at 6 players and have several people on a "waiting list".

Hey Tree, another question. According to the rules, bonus languages cost a skill slot. Is that how you are doing it or are you doing the C&C way with know languages and bonus languages for high Int?

Also, are you using the attribute chart form C&C or AD&D3?

You know, based on Rigon's excellent questions above, I am really starting to think I better read that Player's Handbook and soon!

No, use those slots only if you do not have an INT bonus. OTherwise you get one language per point of INT bonus.

Hmm, I don't have any sort of players guide or anything.

So I'm thinking about either some sort of fighter, or maybe a paladin? If that's possible? I'm not sure.

The player's guides can be purchased at rpgnow. One is by necromancer, mentioned above (Treebore and I have this one in the paper version), and I think one is by james mishler that treebore, myself, and rigon have) Rigon mentioned above.

The player's handbook we are using is here:
http://www.angelfire.com/rpg2/dnd3e/cnc.htm

so it is a little bit different than straight C&C. For example, if you were a Paladin, you would get spells at higher level, and you get multiple attacks at high levels.

A fighter gets more combat bonuses I believe. So that would work too.

If you are a tank type, Rigon and nwelte would give us some good back up fighting and primary scouting skills, and I would cover the spell casting. Not sure what Kayolan is playing, or maybe leif or Titania.

I can't see how we could lose!
EDIT: Hey. ssfsx17 beat me to it!

I agree with Kurt (I can't believe i just said that!). A pure fighter/tank type would be awesome, but let's not forget to bring a medic with us.

Very wise. I also agree with him.

Also, I should note for 64bit, there is no need to buy either of those Wilderlands guides. I just mention those if you wish to get something. I am sure Treebore will come up with some kind of summary for the players.

Think of the Wilderlands as a little more Conan, or Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser than Greyhawk, and certainly more so than the fully developed magical society of the Forgotten Realms.

It is a dark world with civilisation barely surviving against the tide of barbarism and monsters. What it needs is a group of unlikely heroes...

I got both books printed up for just shy of $38 at Staples. I am seriously surprised at how much I like them. Meaning the printed form. Its a nice heavy semi-gloss paper, with the tight spiral bound coil binding, with reasonably thick plastic type clear protective covers.

Feels surprisingly sturdy, and looks pretty darn good.

So I took a quick look at the page, and I'll probably play some sort of tank-type, I usually do, it's just my style.

I was thinking about something like the Knight class from C&C? And if I clicked the right thing, that's basically the Cavalier? So I might be interested in that, as I kind of like the small pre-built backstory in it.

I tweaked my character a little bit. I switched the weapon training abaility to reflect closer to the character concept I have of Daithan as a hunter/archer.

I don't see why not. Plus I think thats just cool to even think about it.

On a side note, I have read through the rules sections three times now, and I have to say I really like Perkins' thinking in most instances. There are only a few rules decisions I don't think I am going to find agreeable.

For one example I do not agree with requiring XP's to be paid for additional skills. I do not find skills to be mechanically significant enough to do so. All of those that I would think should cost XP's are already called "Class skills", let alone to have them cost 10%.

So maybe if someone wants to have a "Class skill" as a "class skill" for their PC, we can adapt this rule to modifying classes. In general, I do not agree with it as is.

As I told Aramis, if you want to earn additional skills during play, I will use my rules for increasing attributes, modified a little, to allow additional skills to be earned in game.

In which case, monk assassin it is. I will generate a character this evening and post it later. Now I need to choose a race. Really thinking gnome or dwarf.

BTW, I plan on deciding exactly where to start this game off by Sunday, and post basic info for your characters to know by Sunday. So hopefully my plans will work out.

Another question: Are you using his intiative rules (1d20+Dex) or standard (1d10).

Straight 1d10, I think it works better with 10 second rounds. I suppose we could just look at it as .5 second increments, and go with a D20. If we go the .5 second D20 route I'll likely allow DEX. With a D10 a DEX bonus just has too dramatic and overwhelming of an effect.
