Sketching out ideas & options for our upcoming campaign and I'm thinking about having some mass combat opportunities in there for the players. Has anyone used the mass combat system outlined in the CKG? If so, how did it play? We don't want anything too complicated, just something to add a bit of backdrop and flavor to what the party is doing.
In the past I've mostly used the BECMI War Machine which has worked okay, but the CKG option looks even more streamlined.
Mass Combat?
Mass Combat?

Re: Mass Combat?
players don't need mass combat rules. They are individual combatants. Two massive groups of monsters/npc's need some type of system or not. The easiest is to compare the two sides in all major aspects and decide who is going to win and just narrate as you go.
Re: Mass Combat?
I’ve used them. They are the slimmed down version of Fields do Battle. They will work just fine for you.Persimmon wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 2:07 amSketching out ideas & options for our upcoming campaign and I'm thinking about having some mass combat opportunities in there for the players. Re: Mass Combat?
Fields of Battle by Casey is really excellent.
Rigon, Treebore, Morty and I played it with Casey some years ago at Troll CON. It was fast and smooth and just loads of fun.
Treebore incorporated some mass combat in our online game a few years ago and it worked very well (by limiting the masses, if you will and he just had a few short combats).
I myself had a blast when I set up my dining room table and went full out with hundreds of mini, props, castles, dragon and pretty much everything I could find to set up a giant mass combat. It was me against myself and it was a blast. Took a week or so to resolve most combats. Not sure if I actually finished it all.
Somewhere on this forum, I did post some pics.
I had hoped to run this at GaryCON with Casey (he suggested the Texas CON), but it didn't happen.
Someday . .

Re: Mass Combat?
Fields of Battle is anyway a very good set of rules.

That sounds very cool. I need to pull out FoB and give it a serious look.Tadhg wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 11:41 pmI myself had a blast when I set up my dining room table and went full out with hundreds of mini, props, castles, dragon and pretty much everything I could find to set up a giant mass combat.
