How is it the Rune lore PDF is...

Post by Treebore »

66 megs, but the brand new Eclipse Phase Transhuman PDF is only 20 megs, while being a 220 page full color book?

In comparison the RL book is B/W and about 140 pages.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Some folks understand portable document format compression and optimization better than others. Plain and simple.

Almost sounds as if the "Press Quality" job option was set in the distiller, which can easily make the file up to three times larger.

My guess was the cover art.
Hey Tim or other trolls, any chance to remake it at under 50 megs? or even smaller? that way i can fit it on my Kindle fire.

I don't know much about technology, but I had this file that I was trying to retrieve off of Googledocs and it was large enough that my poor old computer didn't like trying to view it and my computer would lock up before I could even try to save it.

A computer geek buddy of mine opened it for me and saved it in some other fomat, then converted into a PDF and it came out top quality at under 3 MB. He said that the original had been more than ten times that. I don't know about compression, etc, but making a file take up less space sounds pretty cool. More folks selling PDF's need to know how to make files smaller.

Interesting. I went and looked at some of my other C&C rulebooks:

PHB, 4th printing (B&W): 10.7 MB
PHB, 5th printing (color): 29.6 MB
M&T: 20.5 MB
M&ToA: 14.5 MB
CKG: 92.7 MB (?!)
CM: 39.8 MB

There seems to be a lot of unnecessary variation here, and it certainly explains why some of these are so much harder on my computer than others.

EDIT: I bought most of these from drivethrurpg, and those files are secured. However, the two I got directly from the Trolls via their respective Kickstarters are unsecured, and I was able to use Adobe Acrobat to reduce the file sizes. CM went from 39.8 to 19.4 MB. PHB (5th printing) went from 29.6 to 6.3 MB. Neither seems to have lost any visual fidelity. I can only image how much smaller I could get the CKG if it were unsecured ...

Is that the full AA you used to down size them?

Ya, I have the full AA. Under the Documents menu, "Reduce File Size." It won't work on secured files, though, FYI.

Off the top of my head I suspect its the two giant maps at the end of the file. I do not think I saved those in lower rez. Both are 12 x 18, though I can't remember what rez they are, they may be at 300 dpi.

Thanks,
Steve

makes sense.
as I understand it, 300 dpi is needed for printing, but for on screen viewing, 96 works.

So I finally got a chance to try this and I only have Reader X so the "reduce size" option isn't available to me.
I tried just saving it agian and it got 1 meg smaller, so figure.

any other ideas?

Try out the freebie PDF programs like Nuance, Open Office, etc...?

I haven't tried it myself, but it looks like it would do the trick.

Wow!
I tried that website http://smallpdf.com./ and it turned Codex Celtarum from 81 megs to 8.4 megs!
on screen, I don't notice a difference with the test. The art is a tad lighter, (or less contrast), a tad washed out and colors not as rich... but totally viewable on screen. Pixelation is noticeable when you zoom in. I'd hazard a guess this smaller pdf isn't really printable for art, is maybe not the 300 dpi needed for printing. But now I can put it on my kindle fire and that's killer diller!
