I am a huge advocate of forums - I run a LARP/RPG one and moderate half a dozen more.
Over the last ten years I have battled endlessly against first facebook and now discord as the preferred medium. Both of those are great but they are both transient. Once a conversation goes back more than 100 posts it's lost to the annuls of time. It's great for instant answers and good old fashioned debates. But nothing beats a forum for longevity and being able to think a sentence/answer through before posting.
And since I've been pushing for the forums to be used more, lo! The sleeping dragons have awoken and the earth is rumbling to the tune of forum posts once more!
Yeah, I downloaded and tried the TLG Discord for about 5 minutes. Everyone was very helpful but the format sucks. Never went back on again. If that is the way of the future, I'll say my goodbyes now.
It's a format of communication for a different purpose - it is meant for real time conversations and information exchange, not for saving ideas and text for posterity. Forums can keep things for posterity, discord doesn't. It's not that discord is bad - heck, I'm a TLG Discord moderator - I like it well enough... but it's purpose isn't the same as a forum and if you expect it to be you will be sorely disappointed.
Well I am all for forums for gaming discussion, so if you guys plan to start posting again then i'm all in. I will start directing all my gaming stuff here.
