I'm not a fan of XP awards for treasure or magic items, and since it's been a while since I've awarded XP for a game other than 3.x, I'm wondering if my non-combat awards are enough/too much. Here's what I've come up with so far:
10 XP/level if a player...
* writes a journal entry after a session (Epic Words).
* per entry contributed to the campaign wiki (Epic Words) with a cap of 10 entries per level.
* comes up with a noteworthy solution to a problem.
* role plays exceptionally well during a session.
100 XP/level per character for completion of a primary assigned mission.
50 XP/level per character for completion of any ancillary quests related to the primary mission.
It looks like this works OK for first level, but since XP requirements double each level should per level scale likewise?

Too fried to do the math, but with that formula, it looks like it would take a rogue around 8 missions to go from first to second level. Assuming on mission per session, that would be 8 sessions - which might not be to bad if you're playing 3 times a week, but would take quite a while if you only met every two weeks or once a month.
A wizard or illusionist would take around 20 sessions since their experience point requirements are so much higher than a rogue's. Other classes would fall in between. That's certainly too slow for my tastes, and the tastes of my current (and former) players.
If you want to use a method like this, you might consider working backwards from "How many sessions, roughly, would I like for them to go between levels?" Then figure out the experience point awards based on how many objectives, roughly, you expect them to accomplish.

I also dislike xp for treasure, it has always bugged me for some reason...
Since Im running a sandbox game, I also give XP for a group finding a new location and making it back to town to put it on the shared map, with the caveat that you actually have to make it back to town to tell others about it.

I agree that the treasure/coin method leaves something to be desired. Finding a workable solution is no easy task.
Experiance awards for doing game related stuff is ok.
Realisticly i think the xp progression should be messured by how fast you want them to advance.
My group meets 26 times a year or less, with holdidays and special occasions.
I like to average a level every 3 to 4 sessions roughly.
This however punishes fast advancing classes like rogue and druid.
Rewards slow xp classes wizard, and paladin.
In the end.. i let the players number crunch for xp.
One of the players works the trasure xp and divides it out.
I give bonus xps for greatness Great ideas , great role playing, great loyalty and great bravery.
From time to time i throw xp chunks for adventure completion and other factors as i see fit.
Its not perfect, it isnt even consistant, but it seems to be working.
