Detective Chief Inspector Evelyn St. John St. James (Alias: Justus X. Nihilo)
Class; Inquiry Agent

Evelyn "solved" a major crime, but it was a corrupt judge who insisted he accept a desk job and credit for this case in which an innocent man was punished. He is now confined to his desk, except for lectures on criminology. Though he tried to intervene and free the innocent man, he was too late, and the poor soul, his reputation smeared and his debt too great to bear, killed himself. He has been trying to atone ever since.

Under the assumed name Justus. X. Nihilo, he takes cases, free of charge, in which the odds are stacked against his clients and they are certain to be treated unfairly because of their situation.

Evelyn is a very good detective because of his special gifts, and if allowed to continue as an investigator, he would have found much more about to which depths this corrupt judge (The Right Honorable Sir Marmaduke Bannerworth) had stooped.

Post Re: Rhu's Friday nite game ~ Vict/Ghastly/Masque RD
Prologue

London, England . . . late afternoon to evening on a Saturday in early December – 1880s.

It’s a noisy town and very busy it seems, as it always is.

Hansom cabs race through the streets while people, businessmen and families stroll along the sidewalks. Most are now in a hurry to get home as it’s getting very dark and the fog is setting in ~ the lamblighters are busy at their tasks.

The newsboys are on every corner hawking their papers with the latest happenings in this large metropolis including the recent murder of a women, who was robbed and had her throat slashed. This, only after the first one that occurred a month previous.

Thunder is heard and there are electrical storms in the skies. Most likely a downpour is forthcoming.

In many areas of the city a violin can be heard playing Danse Macabre by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The sound in one area seems to disseminate from a basement, or the underground. In other sections of London the music appears to come from a rooftop.

On the second floor of a flat at 221B Baker Street, a group of citizens gather around a fireplace discussing the incoming weather and the events of the day:

The well respected Doctor John Watson, who is drinking a cup of tea and eating a scone while using a riding crop as he points to a section of a street map of London.

Lydia Marlowe, a beautiful brunette dressed in the latest fashion featuring hues of green is enjoying a tumbler of absinthe but paying no attention to Watson. Instead she has eyes for a man away from the group sitting on a chair by the window.

Mycroft Holmes, government worker – smoking a cigar and drinking a glass of claret, sits back in his divan watching the doctor as he speaks.

Inspector Lestrade of the Scotland Yard, a sly looking fellow still wearing his overcoat, appears to be scowling.

Sir Henry Baskerville and his wife Valerie, friends of the group are comparing notes with regard to the various excellent taste of the scones prepared by Mrs. Hudson.

Count Rhuvein, a Norman world traveler and adventurer who is a close friend and associate of Allan Quartermain and Mycroft Holmes is pouring a glass of champagne for his fiance Lucy Westenra and any others who wish to imbibe.

And sitting in the corner, furiously smoking a pipe - reading and turning the pages of the latest newspaper ~ while seemingly not listening to the discussion ongoing amongst the others, is a Mr. Sherlock Holmes.

Watson, "And here is where the 2nd girl was found" -points to a location in the East End.

Mycroft, "Whitechapel?"

Lestrade, "That is correct, Mycroft!"

The women in green shivers and exclaims, "I'm scared, inspector. I hope the 'Yard will find the murderer!"

"You can count on it, my dear!"

Just then, it seems to go quiet on Baker Street . . . and the sound of the violin - Danse Macabre, but the scale has changed to major.

"Watson, did you hear that!" says Mr. Sherlock Holmes from his corner seat as he jumps up to write down all the musical notes thusly changed by the G scale change of the violinist.

"It's elementary dear brother, someone is sending a message!" exclaims Mycroft.

Valerie Baskerville listens and says, "I wonder if Saint-Saëns would object?

The group continues to hear and be somewhat mesmerized by the powerful playing of the well known tone poem.

Until, the playing stops and the skies unload . . . thunder, lightening and rain.

Prologue continued:

"Well, rain and fog are part of London - but we know that won't stop us from enjoying a great evening! I propose that we go to the Cthulhu Club!" shouts Lucy Westenra as she drains her glass of champagne.

"Sherlock?" she looks at their host.

"Splendid idea, my dear! The good professor has been known to frequent that establishment. Everyone, pack your firearms and weapons . . we may in for a challenge this evening."

Holmes picks up his walking stick and puts his revolver in its holster as he picks up his cape and hat and shouts to everyone, . .

"The game is afoot, my friends. Let's be off!"

Just then, Mrs. Hudson signals Holmes over and away from the visitors.

"Mr. Holmes"

"Please, Mrs. Hudson, call me Sherlock when were alone"

"Yes, Mr. Sherlock. There is a fellow came to the back door to see you. His name is Wellington. It seems he has some skills that you might find helpful. Will you see him?"

"Yes, I have a few minutes. Show him into the back drawing room and I'll be right down there to see him:

Looking at creating an NPC (to help understand that process and other things about the game) ~ thinking about a Paragon who is a healer, among other things.

NPC ~

The Paragon:

A: Constitution, B: Strength, C: Dexterity

Skills: Acrobatics 1, Martial Arts 1, Prime 2 (Dexterity,
Constitution)

Supernatural Powers: Attribute 3 (+5 Strength, +5
Dexterity, +5 Constitution)

Packages: Superior Form 4 (Theme): Invulnerability 2
(Temporal), Keen Senses 2 (+5 vision, +5 hearing),
Robust 2

Shortcomings: Enemy (Villain), Secret Identity, Poverty,
Prior Engagment

Typical Equipment: Costume, Clasp Knife, Leather Armor

Life was fairly normal for you growing up, at least until
you entered your teens. Then, things began to become
strange. You were faster, stronger, and more resilient than
your friends; enough to invite gossip. You didn’t mean
to break that governness’s arm; but she was beating
that poor child and despite being merely a maidservant
you weren’t going to allow that sort of bullying to go
unpunished. You lost your position, but it’s better to do
the right thing. At least, that’s what you keep telling
yourself. You now don a costume to go into the night to
help others, but you’re always afraid that your secret will
be revealed, and you’ll lose yet another position

The many guests gather their cloaks and as they exit 221B Baker Street, hansom cabs are there waiting. Moving quickly through the rain, all enter and the cabs drive on. Thunder and lightning are present, but it doesn’t seem to affect the skills of the coachmen.

Watson, Mycroft and Lydia are in the first cab, Sir Henry and Dame Valerie are in the second one.

As they round a corner, a cab from the east seems to be racing towards them and gun shots ring out from a villain riding alongside the driver. Inside the cab, another villain is firing a pistol.

The Baker Street coachmen wheel their horses to the west and crack their whips to drive the horses faster hoping to flee from the attack. The hansoms race fast down the lane, when suddenly a large haycart moves across to block off the whole street.

The driver attempts to wheel around, but the pursuing coach has them hemmed in. From behind the haycart, two thugs step out wielding shotguns and aim them at the coaches. One of them says, “OK, guv – all of youse get out and come forward and no one will be hurt!”

Just then an arrow enters his throat and he slumps to the ground. “Wot, the bloody hell” says his mate as he looks at his pal and then turns to hear the clatter of fast riding hoofs on the stones of the street as he takes aim with his gun. Too late, an arrow fells him in an instant.

The coach at the rear sees what is happening and wheels his horse around to see if he can get away quickly. Too late, Lydia shoots him dead with her revolver.

At this time, the mysterious archer on his mount closes and then pulls up fast as the horses shoes slide and clatter on the stone street. He tips his hat and turns very quickly to ride off into the night.

“Didja see that!” exclaims Sir Henry. “I think it was a women! But . . but, her ears were pointed!”

“Darling, what are you saying and what does that mean if her ears are pointed?” replies Valerie, still completely unnerved by what she just saw.

Watson tells her that demons and devils have pointed ears as he pulls out a flask and takes a swig and passes it around.

“But she saved us!” says Lydia as she puts her gun away into her purse and has a drink from Watson’s flask. “I need to get one of these, but one that is bigger than my gun!”

That comment draws a chuckle from some of the group.

“Indeed. My brother will be quite disappointed that he was not here to see this” , says Mycroft to no one in particular. He lights a small cigar and suggests that they all should proceed to the club. “This night calls for champagne and cavier!”

All get into their cabs and the drivers set off.

Cool!

No hurry as Penny may have a bit more in her game - or she may end it. In which case, you can create your character while were chatting. I'm sort of waiting to see which classes you and Aergraith choose and then I may create an NPC.

The Victorious Chronicle for this game will be for the most part ~ neutral, gilded.

Having said that, you may encounter a robot - but probably never any steampunk stuff.

Mebbe, some grim and I like chaos.

So . . that probably doesn't really tell you anything with regard to how to interpret the tone of the game! :?

LOL, I like and understand what Mike is saying in that section and that it could be helpful to aspiring/new GMs . . but I'm now thinking that it is not something that really means anything at this moment as to how the game will go.

Thoughts?

[I understand and support that most if not all games need text to help the GM. And that sometimes, that text/material is either unnecessary or confusing to experienced GMs (and admittedly I many times fail to understand a new game or ruleset.]

Hehe, the above post illustrates why I had hoped Penny would run the game! :D

But, the good thing is that having Aergraith, Penny and Treebore as players - they will be the Co-GMs!!!

And then, I'll just narrate the scene and you guys run the game! 8-)

Now I feel better! :P

Oh, and another cool thing.

Gringnr has sent me a suggestion for an NPC which I'm going to use.

Glad to have him in absentia!

Crud, ......you all don't know how much I would love to join this one ..... Masque of the Red Death (always wanted to play it, but back in the day no one ever would, and the Ghastly affairs stuff is just dripping with coolness.) . Oh the thought of mixing Holmes, Sweeny Todd, & Poe .... oh that is perfectly me!

Sadly, I can't. I owe my wife and little girls what little free time I have, so can only play 1 night a week. So, no way to play .....

That said, know I'll be reading everything you all post and living vicariously through you all !

Thanks!

I gotsha . . with regard to family time.

Back when I was an IT consultant/mgr I refused jobs that would take me across the nation when my daughter was young. I gave up on big bucks, but was happy to do so.

Family time is paramount over most things, but we do appreciate when our wives alloy us to do things away - just like they enjoy when we take the kids and they can do their thing.

Bravo!

I love the setting you've created. This is going to be great.

Wellington is on the fire escape listening to every word coming out of 221B Baker Street. She has a stolen copy of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley in her messenger bag. She can't wait to read it to the rest of the gang later tonight. "I do so enjoy the novels Mr. M purchases. This one looks like it could make a stuffed bird laugh."

I freely admit part of the setting alignment is to:

1. Let people know that they have a wide range of "Steampunk" to use, be it superhero or something like Cthulhu by Gaslight type settings.

2. To put on a module cover so people know right out the gate what type of adventure they're getting. For ex:

"Evil in the White City
A Grim Adventure for characters levels 3-6"

Of coruse, the above will have a few hints as to how to run it as Gilded or Grand, but its the baseline. ;)

Look forward to seeing what you guys do with the rules!

GM Michael, generally a Gilded sort of chap

Mike, thanks for your comments - much appreciated.

And yes, Treebore there will be some steampunk!

Michael, really looking forward to that module.

Penny and my wife read the Devil in White City book and loved it.

Might have to give it a read after I re-read Dracula, Frankenstein and all my Sherlock Holmes books and watch a bunch of movies to get ready for the game! ;)

[Luckily I have a week or so before we start]

:)
