No love for Dirty Bowbe's Roadhouse?
I just got this today and really enjoyed the roadhouse description. It will definitely liven up a campaign into which it's inserted.
There are several mini-dungeons sprinkled around it, but I haven't read them in any detail yet.
I wanna go to Dirty Bowbe's tonight!

I like it as well. I just wish it was bigger and had more to it.

Big love from me! The Roadhouse is cool and all, but the Haunted Highlands is what a love the most. The Roadhouse is a part of that, but together the mini-setting is so cool!
Can't wait for Umeshti and the rest of the series.

Casey's description of Dro Madras was pretty awesome too. In another thread somewhere he discussed the city of Dro Madras being split into two modules. Cool idea, but with one problem; it takes too long for each module to come out. HH came out in August (I believe), and Umeshti comes out in December (maybe).
I'm not trying to complain here, at least not much. But I wonder what takes so long? It is my understandings Casey has additional modules in the series done and waiting for TLG. I can understand that TLG has their plates full right now, but isn't each mod only like 24 pages? I freely admit that I'm not in the industry and know little about it, but a 24 page mod doesn't really seem to be that hard to crank out... does it?!

I thought I saw a post from Casey not too long ago (within the last 3-4 weeks). Maybe he's busy writing more HH material?

What takes so long? Writing, Art, layout, editing, printing, distribution. Multiply the time that takes by a dozen projects, then divide that up into a finite amount of personel you end up with only so many hours in the day.
Creativity, the one variable that doesn't fit in time clocks.

eeek, no offense meant Mr. Art Man, and I can totally see where art would take up a massive amount of time... BUT... is artwork really THAT necessary for a 24 page module? I know that feeling, tone and inspiration are important for modules, but IMO artwork doesn;t have to be that prevalent inside a module. I can understand that a module that has more interior artwork might sell better, and if that is the case please excuse my comment.
As for editing and layout (again, take no offense as I'm not in the industry) are these processes for this type of project that massive of an undertaking? *shrugs* I just don't know.
BTW, while I have never done either professionally, if TLG is looking for a proofreader, editor, or basic layout guy, I'd be more then willing to lend any hand of help I can.

Casey is an teacher, so free time is a premium right now. For those of you who like his writing style for Highlands you should get Bard's Gate, he wrote that too. Very similiar "flavor" throughout.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

This is a good suggestion TB. Bard's Gate is a pretty good book, so good in fact that I am running a campaign in this very city in about 12.5 hours! 8)

Im not offended, Its not possible to offend me. Im just explaining what all goes into the process.
Taken individually no, But when you add up all these small things, the odd big thing, yes it's a massive undertaking. The C&C PHB was massively edited, yet people are still finding things. Hell, people are still finding things in Lord of the Rings. *chuckles*
And while the art doesn't take a lot of time, depending on the piece, the text layout, trying to make sure all the text flows right, formatting, putting art in, cover design, ect ect yes its intensive. It takes attention to detail.
Sure. Many people can bang out 24 pages of text fairly easily. When I get on a roll, I can roll out that much in a given day. (Fantasy fiction wise). But rolling out solid, good, writing can vary as much as doing 2-3 modules in a month, to doing 1 every three months, and onward. Its just a matter of the capability of the individual creative person
*smiles* But here's a test for you. You have one month to put together a 24 page module and put it up for peer review. Get cracking.
On another note. Art tends to be a major variable for sure. Some artists can crack out 20 pictures a day. Ive met them. Bastards. Anyhow, sometimes it takes longer. There are times that 'inspiration' hits in fits and starts. Where one just sits there scribbling on an idea, and suddenly, boom, a flush of energy hits and presto something resembling art appears.
Just tends to depend on the position of the earth, sun spots, quality adult photos on the net and lots of other factors.

Once a mod is written, pics must be added then editing and finally it must be solicited to hobby stores before it can be printed then finally released, the last of those stages probably taking the most time, I'd guess. Or so I've heard.

Been a bit Busy
Sorry all, yes, have been working on more HH goodness, and working on a super cool little adventure for Joe Goodman, but I can't say more about that at this time other than Steven told me once, that if Joe asks you to do a project for him, go ahead and drop everything and do it, because Joe pays well and on time!
For those wondering I can say doing this favor for Goodman in no way changes any of my relationships or standing contracts with my good friends at TLG or Necro!
Also: Tree is right, my free time has been quite limited by my "day" job. I teach about 600 kiddos ... art! Of all things. k-5th 90% coming from other than English speaking households!
Tack on to that a soon to be 4 year old, (this weekend in fact)! Toss in Dad's Birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, my Birthday, Christmas... Final Grading period... yeah October-December are always really hectic, but I still manage to stuff a book or part of a book into that 3 month cycle...just not at the speed I normally work or prefer to work! What does lose out is my time for hanging on message boards and networking with friends, fans and cohorts.
Luckily things always chill out after the new year and I get a good stretch of work done between January and the first week of August.

Thanks for touching base with us Casey, and being married to an english teacher (who also is the drama advisor), I understand that the time between October and Christmas is a very hectic period. So take your time, I have to build up my gaming nest egg anyways, so any buying I'd like to do will have to wait for a while.
