Death Dragons of Unklar

Post by Treebore »

One day Unklar was watching his Morgryl devastate the army of his enemies. They were flying and teleporting around, laying down spells of devastation everywhere. Something bothered Unklar. His great Morgryls were missing something. Then Unklars great and twisted mind seized upon the problem! The armies of his enemies were not terrified of his Morgryl!

They were not big enough to be seen across the battle field! They would not break and run in terror! So what could Unklar do to rectify this? In a moment he knew, dragons! But not just any Dragons! New dragons, designed to drive terror into the hearts of any being! Dragons that would be far more devastating then any Dragon that fool the All Father ever brought

into existence! Unklar started to decide what his "Death Dragons" would be, and they became:

Death Dragon of Unklar

NO. ENCOUNTERED: 1 to 24 SAVES: M, P

SIZE: 80 to 85 feet long, INT: 20 to 22

+ tail is 1/2 of body length

HD: 36 to 38 ALIGNMENT: Lawful Evil

MOVE: 40 ft., 150 ft. (fly) TYPE: Dragon (Created, cannot breed)

AC: Special (see below) TREASURE: 18x15

ATTACKS: 2 Claw (1d10), XP: 18,000+

Tail (1d12), Bite (4d12)

SPECIAL: Breath Weapon,

Spell-Like Abilities,

Immunity to Fire (full), SR: 10

Protection From Good, See Invisibility, Invisibility,

Detect Magic are permanetized.

These Dragons are mutations created by Unklar and favored minions. They are relatively new to the ranks of his armies, but they are designed to be devastating and to strike fear into the hearts of everyone, including powerful Paladins. These Dragons are created from a known species, but no one is sure which, or even if it was just from one species, except Unklar and probably a handful of his minions. One thing is for sure, they are strongly imbued with dark energies of Shadow and the Negative plane.

The typical AC of these Dragons is 34, 36 versus those of Good Alignment. They also receive all the protections of the spell Protection from Good. At the very minimum they have the Special spells listed permanetized on them by the power of Unklar himself. These Dragons are also spell casters equal to their typical riders, the Greater Morgryl. These dragons will allow no one else to ride them unless directed to by a Greater Morgryl or Unklar himself. They are magically compelled to obey them without question, to the death.

Since they are also powerful spell casters (Typically 18th level, with one equal to 23rd level) they may have also permanetized any number of other spells upon themselves (CK discretion, but be mean and evil in your selection), much like the Greater Morgryl have.

On top of their incredible powers they are obviously creatures of Shadow and Negative Energy, and is why they are called "Death" Dragons. These creatures are constantly enveloped in a nimbus of a black cloud like energy that is relatively uniformly 5 feet deep all around these creatures bodies. At night, particularly on moonless nights, these creatures are impossible to see even without invisibility. Whenever the Moon, or equivalent light, fills the night sky they are still at +20 to all hide checks, so the vast majority of mortals never even see these creatures at night. They only know of their presence due to their attack or flying or moving close enough to be detected by sound, or feeling the breeze or strong wind created by their nearby passing.

This energy also drains the life force of any living creature. Just getting close enough to engage in melee (the 5 foot radius) is enough to cause a loss of one level of energy. A save is possible, but at CL 36 to 38 it is highly unlikely to be successfully rolled. If the Dragon successfully claws, bites, tail slaps, or even wing buffets a creature then they will lose 1d4 life levels per successful hit. So only great heroes, hopefully also protected from life level loss, dares to fight these creatures.

These creatures are also among the most physically powerful creatures in existence, so add their STR bonus to their attack and damage rolls, which would be an additional +10.

Fear: The fear from these creatures is so strong anyone who sees, or is in some other way aware, of the presence of these creatures must save versus fear, and drop anything and everything and run in sheer absolute thought free terror. The fear is so overwhelming beings will even throw themselves to their death off of cliffs, castle walls, and the like to get away from these creatures. Even Paladins, or anyone else somehow typically immune to fear will still be at a -2 to attack anything while these creatures are around. Other than that they will be the only ones who chose to run or not, unless they are able to make a save versus CL 36. Then they are made of stern enough fiber to control themselves completely.

The breathe weapon of these creatures is terrifying in it's own right, designed by Unklar to quickly break any army of mortal creatures whose life force is derived from positive energies.

The breath weapon manifests itself as a big globe of darkness equivalent to a darkness spell, but 3 times the normal size parameters (60 foot radius). All those enclosed within are likely doomed, because not only are they blinded by the darkness (but not permanently, only while in the area, refer to Remove Blindness for Blindness effects), to where even True Seeing will not show the way, but each round spent finding their way out also requires them to make a CL 36 to 38 CON save to keep from losing 1d4 life levels. Each Breath Weapon effect lasts only 10 minutes, but is often enough to devastate all those captured and lost within the globe. These dragons are known to be able to breathe at least 4 times per day.

These Dragons share all of the common attacks, save bonus', etc... common to all Dragons and not otherwise altered above (such as their Frightful Presence is as above, not how it is described in the M&T), and they are treated as being of the Ancient category. Due to their incredible spell casting powers they often have cast spells on themselves to make themselves more effective in combat, ranging from things as simple as Blur and Haste to things as nasty as Time Stop. So Unklar did a good job to create a creature that is terrifying before the divinely imbued fear Unklar gave it even takes effect.

Which is made all the worse when a Greater Morgryl decides to actually ride one, which fortunately is not all that often. Even more fortunate is these creatures have not been seen outside of Aufstrag ever since Unklar was banished. They are there though, and if ever seen again the world of Airhde will know world shaking trouble is on the march once again.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Yikes! Now there's something to scare PCs who think they're too powerful to be challenged!
