Rhadamanthia Continental Map coming soon

Post by Geoffrey »

"Above is a small preview of one teeny-tiny little section of the Rhadamanthia Continental Map that will be included as a FREEBIE with the Campaign Installment for Adventure Games Journal subscribers. The map is still in progress, yet it already is shaping up to be even better than the Southern Reaches Campaign Map."

James and Peter, I quiver with anticipation!

That is great... wait, can I see the Wilderlands on that map? Oy, that is a big map. But I wonder if future installments of that map will be released (because it seems no so complete), -OR- is this just a small preview of what the whole Rhadamanthia map?

Let me put it this way...

The snippet of the map you see here is, at the scale we are printing it, 3" tall by 5" wide. The entire live area of the map of Rhadamanthia, on the other hand, is around 12" tall by 15" wide (on a map 13" tall by 19" wide), encompassing all 15 districts the size of the Wilderlands, with the Wilderlands proper at the center. The overall area show is equal to 270 campaign maps at a scale of ~240 miles per inch.

That preview? Just a wee snippet, indeed. And it isn't remotely complete... Peter's still working on it, finishing the art and fixing on the names.

I should also note that the map itself can be used with BOTH the Wilderlands of High Adventure AND the Wilderlands of High Fantasy. 90% of the geography, cities, states, names, races... almost everything on the map were from Bob Bledsaw... this IS the wider Wilderlands as he imagined it, with me filling in some of the holes and tidying things up. Bob sent me 28 hand-drawn maps that I stitched together with the Wilderlands original, then I filled in some blanks (leaving plenty of space still for additional Judge-designed areas), and then turned that over to Peter to be drawn by the hands of a cartographer-artiste.

When you see it, it will just blow you away.

James, in the first issue of Adventure Games Journal you give overviews of each of the sections of Rhadamanthia. How much of this Rhadamanthian content in AGJ #1 is from Bob Bledsaw, and how much is from you?

I'd say 70% of the content is from Bob, the rest is mine, and where I have added things is mostly in details. The entire map, with a few minor exceptions, additions, and clarifications, is Bob's map. The only sections of the map that are not directly from Bob are the Northern Demon Seas and the Infinite Islands; Bob's descriptions of those areas lacked a map, as they are all tiny little islands in vast seas.

The Rhadamanthia map is, effectively, completely valid in both the Wilderlands of High Adventure and the Wilderlands of High Fantasy. The differences are in details on the much smaller, campaign-map scale.

Here's the preview of the map of Rhadamanthia, the continent upon which the Wilderlands can be found:

Rhadamanthia is divided into 15 districts, five east to west by three north to south. The map is 3,465 miles east-west by 3,168 miles north-south. The Wilderlands is the central district, centered on the Pazidan Peninsula. The general information on each district is found in the first issue of Adventure Games Journal. The Rhadamanthia map will be available soon, likely in an 11" x 17" format; originally I wanted to go with 13" x 19", but then that would require two folds to ship, making the folded map very small; 11" x 17" requires only one fold. The cost of doing it at 17" x 22" or 22" x 34" is, unfortunately, prohibitive.

The continent is based on a series of 25 maps Bob Bledsaw sent me; he hand-drew each district in separate north and south sections and put in the major details, while I filled in some holes and expanded upon some areas. Note that the Wilderlands district already was described, while the northern section of District 14: The Demon Seas and District 15: The Infinite Islands, were all merely small islands with no maps. Peter Bradley took the map I stitched together and drew this thing of beauty. The published map includes text; this preview is without the text layer.

James, you are a lucky man to both A) get to reveal Bob's greater Wilderlands to the world, and B) get to have a major hand in filling-in the blanks.

The map looks promising indeed!

Going to the AGP website would be a good start, or using the email James has in his sig area is probably the best way to start.

Assume he has bad spam and put something like "I WANT TO ORDER YOUR JOURNAL" in your subject line for your email.

What happened to the print version of this? It shows as available on the AGP website but there is no link for it. I looked everywhere but no go. Anyone know?

The delays with the next subscription item are what caused the delays in selling this product. I suppose at this point, I should just start selling it and make sure that I set aside enough copies for the subscribers... I've got some modifications to make to the website likely Monday or Tuesday, so I'll post the details then on how to order them.

I may have missed it but I didn't see anything on becoming a subscriber. I had thought that program ended. Definitely curious about it tho.

The subscription program is no longer available, but those who were already subscribers will get their benefits (though the program was altered, with the option of getting a refund instead).

I will never offer subscriptions again, as I have no way to guarantee the timely release of products.

Thank you James. I had thought that was the answer but I was not sure.

James, what size did the Rhadamanthia map end up being? And what's the scale on the map (i. e., one inch = how many miles)?

The map ended up being 11" x 17", with a scale ~320 miles/inch (nicely works with 20 miles to the 1/16th inch).
