The backstory is fine with me. What's important is what happens going forward, really. It's enough to get us started certainly!

I am more of a "deeds over backstory" person. With Traveller it gets a little strange because you certainly do have a backstory because of character creation, but I suppose it's developed its own tropes that correspond to Ye Olde Tavern to get people on the same page.

Since we are a merc unit, is Combat Armor available as an initial purchase?

If you can afford it, you can have it.

Yeah, and that's kind of what the backstory is intended to be- a jumping off point. Not a destination, not at all.

Great sesh, gang! I will write a summary within a couple of days. Also, I will change the backstory to reflect what we went with instead. I had a blast, and I hope you did, too!

Yes! Thank you, Gringnr: great job hosting your first roll20. You were really well prepared. Outstanding.

When I was making my character I came to the conclusion she seems awfully fragile so I played that first session really cautiously. As in, totally avoiding all risk.

Cautious is one thing, stalling out the adventure is another. Were you all ok with avoiding the conflicts presented? If not I hope you will speak up in the future. I am happy to play along even if it means hiding under a table or using a dead body as a meat shield.

Even so, I am certain an older elite woman would never welcome advances from a gross group of hunters -- especially during a business meeting. I don't see her ever impulsively initiating a bar fight. And as an elite member of society I do think she would berate the wait staff. He ought to have been our table's ally. His sexist shrug to the hunters (right in our view!) was a terrible breach of etiquette. Why would he be perplexed that she wanted nothing to do with creepy dudes? He must be new, inexplicably willing to lose the tip from our table OR MAYBE THE DRINK WAS POISONED and he was in on it ....

btw: Alexei does have lovely ears even if he isn't officially an elf.

I felt that you acted your character superbly. Never felt that you were holding up anything. I have planned for multiple possibilities for pretty much every encounter in this scenario, fleshing out material missing from the module when necessary.

I have tried to ensure that there are multiple ways to advance the story rather than rely on a single course of action on the part of the players.

Also, thanks for the compliment, Penny. I definitely wanted to be prepared. I forgot to use most of the sound effects, though. I had "busy starport" and "starship bridge" on file, but forgot about them. But I have plenty left for the upcoming sessions.

Not as fragile as I am.
Total HP:
Randall: 30
Alexei: 26
Ziba: 21
Pender: 18

I think I started out slightly better than that, but with 6 terms the aging rolls killed me.

Are we going to play this module through before returning to Xylh? That'd be fine with me.

If you all want to do that, that would be fine with me. I estimate 2 -3 more sessions to finish it... having a good time running it.

Ah yes, aging amd starship mortgages. I like Classic Traveller, but on some level, it reminds me of:

Are these wound points, then? I saw mention of them but didn't see how to calculate them.

:P

In CT, you take damage to your first 3 (physical) stats.

Yeah, basically the measure of a Traveller's vitality/life/etc. is the sum of your three physical characteristics. Damage is applied in a rather unirthodox manner, basically one stat at a time. One stat reduced to zero= briefly incapacitated. Two stats at zero= gravely wounded. All three physical stats at zero= death.

There are a few nuances to that but that's the gist.

Post Re: Gringnr's Sunday Night Spacejacking
DISAPPEARANCE ON ARAMAT

~our story so far~

The party (Dr. Zenbureasal, mercenaries Pender, Alexei and Randall) has been hired by Dr. Lonet Chadra to find his daughter Alandra. Alandra, a university professor, had been missing for nearly a week, along with 5 of her students. The group was on the wild and untamed planet Aramat, for the purpose of learning archaeological techniques. Lonet has offered the party 2000cr apiece for the job, plus a further 2000cr bonus for finding, and, if possible, rescuing some or all of the University group. If this is not possible, definitively determining their fate will also earn the bonus.

While the rest of the newly-formed team gathered as much information as they could about Alandra's disappearance, Russell Went with Marck Keller to purchase ammunition. Along the way, he tried to get a feel for Marck's motivations and trustworthiness. Sensing nothing suspicious, he acquired his ammo and returned to the group.

Once assembled on Dalaan, where the university is located, the search and/or rescue party (accompanied by Lonet and Marck Keller, Alandra's fiancee and mission co-financier) headed to Aramat by way of Palmyra. Expecting a brief stop to refuel at Palmyra Highport, the party was forced downport by the unexpected presence of several Imperial Navy vessels in urgent need of repair due to damage from a meteor shower. Pender tried to cajole the Port Authority into letting their ship refuel at Highport, to no avail.

Unavoidably delayed for several hours, the party accepted an invitation from Lonet to dine at one of Palmyra Downport's many restaurants. Due to the forced detour of many travelers (owing to the same Naval ships that caused the party's delay), the place was especially crowded.

The team was eating when Dr, Zenbureasal was unexpectedly (and rudely) accosted by one of a group of hunters occupying a nearby table. The group was loud and unruly, and some of those in the search party noticed that one of the hunters kept raising a hand to his mouth, as if stifling a cough or clearing his throat. The Doctor asked the offending hunter to leave her alone, then summoned the restaurant manager to inform him of the problem. She inquired about summoning the Port Authority. And, when the hunter returned to trouble her again, initiating unwanted physical contact, she summoned the law.

Port Authority officers Smalley and Treadwell arrived a short time later. Dr. Zenbureasal wanted to take her leave immediately and shower. She didn't like that one of the hunters had touched her, while another seemed as if he may have been suffering from some sort of illness. Officer Smalley accompanied the Doctor back to Lonet's ship, the Damme d'Honneur, while officer Treadwell questioned the unruly hunting party.

Upon reaching the Dame d'Honneur, the keenly observant Doctor noticed what appeared to be evidence of someone having broken into the ship. Namely, a small scorch and what appeared to be miniscule tool marks on the ship's electronic door lock. She alerted officer Smalley, who, to her frustration, seemed unimpressed by the gravity of the situation. Nonetheless, Dr. Zenbureasal made a report of the incident to officer Smalley, and summoned the rest of the party from the restaurant.

As the mercenaries and their patrons were heading back to the Dame d'Honneur, Pender hung back, trying to blend into the crowd. He had hoped to see if they were followed, as the team had grown suspicious of the hunters in light of the evening's developments. He was, unfortunately, seen by the hunters (who may or may not have been following, it wasn't clear), who nearly ran into him as they, too, headed from the restaurant! Pender maintained a distance, but watched as the suspect group boarded their own ship, a luxury yacht called the Desiree Keah.

When Lonet, Marck and the merc team arrived at the Dame d'Honneur, they performed a cursory inspection of the ship. Everything was seemingly undisturbed, so officer Smalley took his leave, assuring the party that the Port Authority would conduct an appropriate investigation. However, since there seemed to be no immediate threat to life or limb, the investigation would be prioritized behind more pressing law enforcement concerns. He then left them the means to contact him directly, should they need anything further.

The party, feeling that a more assertive approach was called for, was not pleased with what they felt was a rather dismissive attitude on the part of law enforcement.

The team began inspecting the ship again, this time more closely. Dr. Zenbureasal found evidence that someone had tampered with the ship's computers. It appeared as though someone had attempted to install a program of some sort, but going through the logs, it was impossible to tell if the installation had been successful, or what the program had been designed to do. The Doctor saved the logs before restoring the ship's computer to a previous saved state. Faced with this evidence of intrusion, the team decided to once again summon the authorities.

However, Alexei was suspicious of officer Smalley's offering of his direct contact details, thinking that perhaps this was an attempt on the officer's part to keep any further investigation of this incident off of official channels. So, he contacted a Port Authority desk sergeant, and asked if what Smalley had done was standard operating procedure. The desk sergeant replied that it was. Nonetheless, Alexei had two different officers (Pulido and Nakamura) sent around to take their second report.

Further frustration ensued when the officers, lacking the computer expertise to understand what the Doctor was showing them, took the same "no harm, no foul, we'll look into it" approach that officer Smalley had earlier.

The team asked the officers for access to the security footage from the surveillance cameras in the vicinity, but the officers explained that the investigation would be a process, and that it would likely take several days for such access to be granted, if such action was even deemed appropriate.

Seemingly getting nowhere, the team briefly considered trying to surreptitiously access the data feed from the cameras. After some disagreement as to whether this was worth the risk, it was decided to press on, and hope that the ship had not been compromised.

To be continued...

[Gonna finish this over the next couple of days- watch this space!]
