Looking to play some C&C by post!
Looking to play some C&C by post!
Hello, I have gotten many chances to run C&C, but very few to actually play it. Is anybody here interested in running a play by post for C&C? I would be very interested in playing, and can likely find a couple others willing to play as well.
I want to do a PBP and not a Play by Chat because it is hard for me to coordinate meeting for a chat, but people can post at anytime as long as it is regular.

Well, I was going to post that I could run a game anyway. I would be happy to run PbP here for c&c, it would allow me to dust off some old skills. I would have the following rules
1. post at least 3-4 times per week
2. don't commit to playing unless you're sure you can keep up with the game.
3. Roll up characters using the 4d6 method, arrange how you want.
4. I will handle combat several turns at a time. When posting combat tactics, give me a sense of what you want your character to accomplish for three turns, as well as die rolls for three attacks, three damage rolls, and a saving throw (just in case ) I will adjucate from there, and if there is a major incident I will post for new options (heavily wounded character, major situation change etc...) That way I hope to avoid getting bogged down in the minutae of PbP combat.
I will start out with a small "book of lairs" type adventure, and expand further if we all can work well together. I am open to suggestions for campaign setting, as my homebrew world isn't quite finished. I have ideas for three:
1. Greyhawk- furyondy, highfolk, Vesve Forest area, against the forces of Iuz
2. FR 1st ed style- Vaasa and Damara (good for winter adventure)
3. Yggsburgh- great book! use gods from greyhawk, as I don't have Erde at this time, would start outside the city, and would not necessarily be concerned with castle zagyg/dark chateau.
We could possibly use my own creation if you didn't like anything else, but I would prefer not to run that till it's reasonably complete.
Let me know, let's play!

I'm pretty sure I have time for this. Besides, doing this will help me remember to post in Ronin's PbP.
I'll try out a Human Cleric. I haven't played one in a long while. Greyhawk/Yggsburgh is fine with me. I own both. I own a lot of setting materials.
So put Yggsburgh in GH.
1 5, 9, 1 6, 1 4, 9, 1 5.
STR: 1 4
DEX: 1 5
CON: 9
INT:9 Prime
WIS 1 6 Prime
CHA :1 5 Prime
Name: Rolin Atyar

Well, It Looks Like Yggsburgh it is!
All characters start with 2,750 XP so should be around level 2
Use EGG's Multi class rules from YGB sourcebook, or available free from the trolls.
Max hp first level, normal after.
Roll standard starting money x 1.5, and buy from prices listed in PHB, no magic items can be bought.
Give me a brief synopsis of character personality and alignment, including why you happen to be in the yggsburgh area, and an answer to the Conan question "what three things are best in life?"

Oh yeah, forgot to mention . . . Yggsburgh or Greyhawk would be great! Hmm, Yggsburgh set in Greyhawk would be great!
Looking forward to the game.

Well, my character's name is Olladahn Hawkmoon, and he is a Hin of the 5 Shires who is wandering from home in order to learn the ways of the world. Alignment is NG-- he likes to help people, regardless of whether doing so is with or without the permission of the authorities.
3 best things? A good full pipe, a full belly, and a song in your heart!
BTW-- I would like to have him use a bastard sword or longsword as a 2 handed weapon (like a halfling version of the greatsword). Is this okay?

http://www.robertreppert.com/varnick.xls
edit/add: my spells I determined randomly btw. fortunately magic missle was one that I rolled, whew.
btw, are we going to assume spells are available (like Clerics') or find and/or research them beyond these starting ones?
Thanks!

Very good.
Should our characters be from the Yggsburgh area necessarily, i.e. my character is an elf and could be from Longforest or should we be from afar and travelling to the city?
Also, do you allow bonus stacking as a houserule? Seems may CKs do. For instance, my elf has a +1 racial bonus to DEX and a +2 from DEX ability and if you allow stacking then I can run with a +3 for AC and ranged attack BtH.
Thanks!

You should be from wherever you want to be from, inside the area or out, inside would be easier, as I haven't decided whether this is actually in greyhawk or not (I am leaning that way however.) but if you have a good backstory either way I don't care, as long as it makes sense.
I'm not wild on the stacking, so my answer is no on that one, do I take it that you did apply the bonus to your DEX? I like low powered campaigns for the most part.

Thank you sir! for the sake of helping a low level wizard out, I will grant you one more spell for your spellbook, of your choosing (but keep same number cast/day) For the future, I will require you to find and research spells. This is good for you, in that I do make sure to have spells available for the enterprising player. It is bad for you that I also GM Call of Cthulhu games as well... (Mua-ha-ha ha!)
I would like an answer to the conan question, as well as a brief expose on the "infidel" that you have marked on your sheet under worldview.

I will allow you to do that with either a longsword or broadsword (I think the broadsword would be more comfortable for a halfling to wield in that manner) not a bastard sword

well in the movie Conan's answer to the Mongol general was:
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!
Varnick's would be (and this is important that it's Varnick's perspective, unlike many players I've RP'd with in face to face this happens far less in pbp - I don't play myself).
1. Pursuit of excellence
2. Expose darkness and crush those who propogate it.
3. Educate those who can and disdain the ignorant (those who wish to remain in darkness).
Deity of Infidel simply means the literal version of the word - atheist/godless, Varnick believes any so called holy magic is merely another form of magic and not from any gods at all. He is more respectful toward druidic magic than most clerical forms due to druidism being more of a philosophy than a religion. He is also a chaos follower though not evil in any way and despises with the utmost those who associate it that way. He views the world as more chaotic than lawful and attempts to live apart from the natural chaos of the world only leads to distrust and divisions amongst people along with unnecessary heartache.

My understanding is that racial bonuses adds to the stat. For example if you rolled a 14 for DEX it is now a 15. Is that view incorrect?

No, You are correct, that's by the book, and my ruling. Rhuvein was asking whether I would stack the +1 to AC and ranged attacks as well as the base score, and that (I think) is what I said no to. He seemed to indicate that a lot of CK's do this, and I haven't played C&C enough to know, but I feel that would make the game more high powered than I would like. If I misunderstood Rhuvein's post I would be interested in hearing a better explanation.

Also, I would like to run a rules option idea by you. I think that class and racial abilities should be considered Prime, regardless of the stat. The concept of the cleric with a 10 Dex prime being better at moving silently than a ranger with 18 Dex, but not prime, even though it is a class ability, is kind of weak. However, I have no problem with a cleric with Dex 10 Prime beating a ranger with 18 dex non prime in a dancing contest or something because that is not a class abillity of the ranger. The thing with primes is they are supposed to represent training, but so should class abilities

Question for the CK: Can I have a pet, from a prior casting of Animal Friendship? I would like to have a black wolf, named Whisper.

The cleric still may not be better at move silently because its not a class skill therefore the cleric wouldn't be able to add level the formula would only be d20+dex mod vs. d20+dex mod+level
(this btw is only one of many uses for DEX, AC being a big one which clerics do need and any other arbitrary things which the CK determines can be accomplished via a dex check).

I'd like to join in, if it's cool with everyone.
I just rolled the following stats:
Roll 1: 6, 6, 5, [1] = 17.
Roll 2: 5, [1], 3, 2 = 10.
Roll 3: 6, 3, 6, [3] = 15.
Roll 4: 4, 5, [1], 2 = 11.
Roll 5: [6], 6, 6, 6 = 18. (I couldn't BELIEVE this one!)
Roll 6: [1], 5, 2, 2 = 9.
I'd probably play a fighter type of some kind.

My understanding is that racial bonuses adds to the stat. For example if you rolled a 14 for DEX it is now a 15. Is that view incorrect?
ShawnG, no problemo at all to not allow stacking.

I'm not wild on the stacking, so my answer is no on that one, do I take it that you did apply the bonus to your DEX? I like low powered campaigns for the most part.
No. As mentioned above, attribute modifiers don't get added to the rolled stat, so 16 was my dice roll. I did however add the +1 racial bonus to my AC, I will now adjust it.
[Edit - OK, added racial mod to DEX attribute = 17]

I've consulted my Players Handbook on this matter, and while page 8 does state that the modifier is added to skill checks, they are referring to the modifiers which correspond to the ability score, not the racial attribute modifier. If you look a couple of paragraphs up you will see that the handbook states that attributes can be modified by race, and on page 31 it states that the racial modifiers are applied to the attributes.
So in your case, your DEX is an impressive 17, while your CON shall be reduced to 8.
BASH MAN, I'm still mulling your rules suggestion, and while I will happily allow a comapion dog if you wish, I would like to keep the animal friendship to the run of actual play.

A level 2 ranger with 18 dex and a level 2 cleric with 10dex prime are attempting to sneak by some orcs. assuming the cleric isn't wearing some godawful metal armor which I would apply a further penalty to, the Ranger would need to beat a 12 modified by +4 for the DEX, and +2 for the ranger level so would need to roll a 6, the cleric would need to roll a 12 unmodified, so would have a significantly harder time of it, but still would be doable. I have no problem with this situation as it stands, because moving silently is a common skill that any child might develop somewhat in the act of growing up.
I will apply penalties to those things that require more advanced skill, like picking locks, disarming traps, animal friendship etc... I will apply these on a case by case basis, but In keeping with the spirit of the game, you can try anything you like!
Edit: I just realized your ranger is not DEX prime so you actually would have a harder time of it than the cleric since you've multi classed as well. I will grant you one concession, you may pick whether you would like your ranger prime to be DEX or STR, I don't think this is unrealistic for a ranger, and I may houserule it this way from now on. Your strength checks will be harder, but If you want to play a stealthy ranger you can.

Thanks ShawnG, I did indeed overlook that. Hmm, I've only added 1 demi-human to my tabletop game, I better recheck his character sheet and racial mods to see if it got added.

Also, I switched the CON attribute around with INT attribute, so my CON is reduced to 11 (from 12 using the -1 racial mod) and my INT is 9. 8)
