Post Starting A1 and Aihrde
Starting my 1st Aihrde campaign with A1 this Sunday. I was wondering for those of you who have run it if you had particular ways of getting your parties involved... did you just start in town, etc. Did you use hooks? Just looking for ideas to bounce around with my own.

I just started my group off in the town and told them to go around to talk to people to 'collect quests', as though it were a computer game. (They weren't used to 'sandbox' style gaming.)

It worked: they talked to lots of people and worked out what they wanted to. Made maps and then unfortunately got totalled in the Vargolg. I'd suggested starting at second level perhaps. It seemed a bit tough for a straight up first level adventure.

Actually just started this tonight - and I have my group doing a separate adventure dealing with a sudden undead encursion into the town before they go looking for the Vargolg - that plus the other stuff they'll probably do 1st (Kruggle's lair, etc.) and I think they may be at 2nd by the time they get to the main dungeon.

Thanks for the ideas - I did a similar start with the town, although I had the mage Aladadius look to hire them to procure medicine for Clement from the Witch Neegle as a primary 1st task. Check out the Crusades thread for my reports on these games.

I like the idea of running The Rising Knight to help get the character's in the groove and maybe leveled.

You don't want to do the Vargolg until 3rd level with a party of 4. Too high a chance of a TPK. Still pretty risky at 3rd level, but my family did it without me pulling punches, but lucky rolls definitely helped.

Great beginning.

Me, I did what Storm Queen did (except for the totaling!!), along with a few of the rumor table suggestions and man, our group had a lot of options.

Wide open and perfect for calculating CKs!!

Just posted my 1st session log on the Crusades thread.

The party will actually be six (5 + NPC fighter right now, new player or even 2 maybe joining).

I had intended to have them go through a crypt/dungeon adventure and some other stuff before ever finding the Vargolg, so I was assuming mid 2nd level probably with party of 6. Would this still be a little light?

I may add another homebrew element or two in the area first then.

6 second levels can probably handle it. It will still, obviously, rely on how good or bad the rolls are.

Plus I had them fight a lot of Red caps between Ludensheim and points south of Botkinburg, then reduced the number in the Vargolg. Plus my group didn't even go into the lower levels until later.

So I am sure you can balance it out to where your comfortable with the chances.
