Monster Hit Die by Type

Post by Demiurge »

I've been browsing my newly arrived M&T and it looks like most monsters follow SRD format for type & hit die, but some are different. A couple of examples:
Undead - Allip (d12), Banshee (d8)

Fey - Nymph (d6), Dryad (d8)
I'm wondering what the determining factors were for the differences within the same type. I only ask because I want to convert some monsters from 1e sources and would like to follow the same format.

Thanks!

Elements to consider:

1) Size

2) "Toughness" or "combative nature"

3) earlier source

Of these, the third was most crucial -- it was intended that C&C version retain an average HP total roughly equivalent to earlier versions, sans the HP bonus that Constitution or that source provided. This meant that, for example, a lich went from having 9d8 to 18d4. This, too, because in C&C, HD directly represents "how hard it is to kill."
