Feedback Sought on a Cross-Compatible Monster Stat Block

Post by clavis123 »

Question: Can you easily understand and use the following creature stats in your favorite OSR or OSR-adjacent game, without further explanation?

AMPHISBAENA
Impression: A thick, green snake larger than a man, with a head at both ends.
Qualities: Neutral, Aggressive, Large, Beast, Reptile, Serpent
AC: 5 points better than unarmored
HD: 3
Move: Slither, 75% human speed | Roll, 125% human
Attack: Bite, Bite [1d4, 1d4]
Intelligence: Negligible (or 2)
Dexterity: Above Average (or 12)
Morale: Average (7 on 2-12 scale, or 10 on 1-20 scale)
Saves: 3 points better than normal
Typical Treasure: Negligible
Special Characteristics: Poisonous Bite (Save or Die in 10 minutes) | Form body into a hoop and Roll | See in complete darkness | Endure cold weather | Body worth 300 gp to alchemists.

The goal is a stat-block with the broadest possible adaptability – not just for the various retro-clones, but also with the new wave of Old-School systems that re-interpret the basic game. ALL Feedback is welcome.

Anybody well-versed in classic D&D style roleplaying with understand this. However, my first impression when reading this is "is this an OSR version of a 'template?'" Even after reading it several times, it still feels like this is a template to overlay another existing set of monster statistics. I'm not quite sure that's what you are looking for. This stat block is indeed broad in the sense that those that understand it, must add in their own statistics to complete the stat block in some cases (AC, saves, DEX, etc.). For most, they will be able to do so on the fly. For others, who live by a hard stat-line, this could be frustrating.

Seems straightforward and versatile to me. Good work!
It happens sometimes. People just explode. Natural causes.
