Warhammer Quest is coming back...sort of

Post by TheMetal1 »

Well, I first saw this on Steam. Not sure how it will actually translate. I am hoping they would do a faithful board game representation, like Talisman, we'll see how it turns out. It's gotten mixed reviews since it came out in January and apparently some good updates. Seems to be like the board game. This will likely be future purchase just to try it out.

But beyond that Fantasy Flight Games is now producing Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card game.

So it seems that this is along the lines of Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. Watched the video there, which talks about the development, but not so much the mechanics. I never had a chance to play or even see Warhammer Quest. I'm still hoping that Games Workshop will produce it again like they did with Space Hulk. I was a bit dissappointed that it was a reprint of the actual game, but from what I've seen, I'll probably pick this one up

Serleran introduce me to Warhammer Quest at Con on the Cob a few years back. One of the best board games I have ever played. I finally got a base set of it a couple of years ago. A card game wouldn't even come close to being as awesome as the board game.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Alas, this is tragedy of OOP games. I hear the same thing about this game, it's just awesome, yet GW won't produce or license it! FFG I am certain would do an excellent job with it and miniatures would be fantastic as well - if Talisman is any indicator.

Old games likes Warhammer Quest don't fit the current style of mass produced games and making money. WHQ is a complete game as is. Don't need to add very much to it. If you remember, original WHQ was in print for probably 8 or so years. It put out 8 character packs, 3 packs of treasure cards, and 2 small box expansions in that time. WHQ was popular, but not supported.

Now, bring in FFG. With a new card game version, they can print a ton of cards and and tokens on the cheap, and expand the game with nothing but cards and cardboard cutouts. Each expansion will be in the $40+ range. This way, FFG makes money on the license. There is a serious glut of dungeon exploring boardgames on the market right now, and GW is probably rapidly going to change the Warhammer Fantasy (WHQ) world. These things make producing another classic version of WHQ improbable, and never likely to happen in the near future.

I'm not saying the new card game version of WHQ will be bad, but I was not a fan of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition, and I will probably not like this game either. Good thing I still have all of my old stuff for the original game!

To hell with Fantasy Flight Games. After FFG's travesty of turning Warhammer Fantasy RP into a board/card game, they lost any good will I had for them.

Don't know much about Warhammer Quest other that it's was supposedly awesome. YMMV. No direct experience with the game. GW dropped and focused on it's Warhammer Fantasy Battle game version 1 thru 8. Not sure why, but who knows what was going on. I figured it would appear again, like they did with Talisman and Space Hulk (and Dread Fleet - which I guess was an update to Man O' War). I really liked when they had the specialist game stuff, but alas all that is gone now. And Warhammer Quest never appeared again. And now the "Olde World" is dead too (along with Warhammer Fantasy Battle)... it lives on only through Fantasy Flight Games.

Can I complain - sure, but then again, I don't hear a lot of demands for Gorkamorka and Oi Dats Mi Leg reprints from GW either.

As far as Warhammer Fantasy RP?

Well I agree with both Ancalagon and Omote, that it was DOA. The 1st and 2nd Edition was pretty compatiable. I have several of the books and would certainly run or play in it. 3rd edition, I didn't even bother with. The system wasn't broken (IMHO) so why radically change it. I guess some folks really liked it, but to me it made no sense doing what they did.

That being said, even with the problems of WHFRP 3rd Edition, FFG still allows PDFs and some print on demand of the books (WHFRP Companion) and they're keeping the old world alive. Plus they've got a ton of great games so no good will lost here. Considering they found a work around with GW miniatures and the 40K version of Talisman with the Character Busts, that was pretty cool.

I have not yet tried the 3rd edition of WHFRP but I have no hopes it will be enjoyable. Its mostly to get something out of the purchase (got a vast majority of the stuff cheap).

As for Warhammer Quest... unbelievable game. In my top 5 board games.

This thing? I can see why they're making it. I'll consider it... but, cards are passé. Retro is in.

I picked up the app in the Humble Bundle a few weeks ago and played it on my nook. Pretty straight forward game. I can see how this would be a fun board game. I do wish that they would have had a dice roll option - like the digital talisman version along with cards. But overall not too bad a game.

I've seen on the FFG page Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game is out. Anyone pick it up yet?

Nope. I have the board game, so no desire for the card version. If this was the board game, I'd be interested in any re release of the board game expansions, since I have none of those...

I did pick up a copy from my FLGS yesterday. I opened it up just to take a look. There's not much too it, and the cards are sort of uninspiring for a FFG-style card game. However I have not read the rules at all. I should be able to get to it this weekend. On the same day I received my Ghostbusters Board Game so I have a lot of reading and playing this weekend!

Ah, I thought - for a brief second - that this is something about Warhammer Online. Silly me.
