While on dragonsfoot.org I caught a post by someone asking about a system for generating high level PCs in a method similar to the Classic Traveller careers system. So, I posted about the article I wrote in early Crusader inspired by CT, but I couldn't remember the issue. So, I went to google and found that it was Crusader 8...

Yeah, I have certainly used your method before. It was Crusader 8 and then some errata in 9 or something? Something to get into a book somewhere.
I also sometimes use the tables in the back of the AD&D DMG, but it's good to have options.

Yeah, I'd originally made the system to use in AD&D, then converted to C&C. The problem with the system in the back of the DMG is that it consistently gives these new characters less magic items than comparable PCs who play up to that level. I base this on the pregen sample characters given in the various AD&D modules, who uniformly have more magic and goodies than the DMG system provides.
Why not just let the PCs roll up a few more magic items? Because the DMG magic item tables, though fun, are set up alphabetically rather than in some sort of level-appropriate order. This was brought home to me when I allowed a 4th level MU (freshly generated) to have 2 rolls on the magic items tables. He ended up with a Robe of the Archmage and a Wand of Lightning. I kid you not!
That's why in the dragonsfoot.org magazine Footprint #2 I did an article called "Magic in their proper place" in order to circumvent this problem. This later evolved into the full system for PC magic in the C&C system. Oh, its still possible for a lucky roller to get a potentially more powerful item (just like in play) but its a much lower percentage.
