Old school goodness

Post by Relaxo »

Found these at a used book sale for 20 cents each.

They're like a who's who of TSR in 1980...

Author Rose Estes (wrote Greyhawk novels after Gary wrote the first two)

Cover Larry Elmore (I dare say his later paintings were better)

Editor Troy Denning

D&D Consultant Frank Mentzer

Illustrations by Jim Holloway (below) and Timothy Truman (I don't know him by name, but the illos in Return to Brookmere are good!

How much fun is this? And it's a Choose your own adventure book! Remember those? I've been reading Dungeon of Dread all week (I must brag, I won on my first try, stole the treasure and killed the evil wizard! SWEET!)

I can honestly say I am completely jealous . Great find. The funny thing is me and friend were just looking at an old catalog with everyone of the "choose your own path" books listed. I need to find these and start my son on and lifetime of Fantasy enjoyment. Poor kid doesn't have a chance.

*chuckles* Well, after 29 years I'd say he's bound to have improved a bit.

Some of these are pretty cool, and written decently enough... and others are pulp material, literally. But, good for you. I had a whole bunch of these, and they just sort of vanished one day. Oh well.

I've got the complete run of these, read a few of them and thought them quite good. Still love Pillars of Pentegarn (sp?). Even tried to design a dungeon from it before moving onto other things.

I'm gonna guess your not a comic collector then? because Timothy Truman is a fairly well known name in the comic world. The best example of Truman's awesomness is the old GrimJack series from First comics back in the 80's. If you can find some check it out, very cool concept and character.

Nice find by the way. I remember those books (and similar ones) and even tried some.

Now, if I could find a copy of the old GrailQuest books...

Guilty as charged.

More of a Marvel man, and my brother was the big comic collector, so I never had to bother. Recently been back in the habit but I hate pamphlets so I wait for the TPBs so I'm always a year behind at least.

Cool finds!

I just picked up Return to Brookmere and Revenge of the Rainbow as well as two Top Secret ones for a buck while on vacation. I've gotta get some more!

Temporary threadjack: Well your in luck because Grimjack has been reprinted into trades by IDW comics. If you like inter dimensional, badassary that enables all sorts of stories and cross genre's up to and including fighting off demons alla Rock n' Roll style side by side with Jimmie Hendricks? Then I guarantee you'll love this book. : unthreadjack

I wish I had purchased some back in the day. There was at least one for Star Frontiers as well. Wish I had gotten that one at least.

I used to have a few of those books, but I got rid of them many years ago..
I wish I had kept them. Congrats on your find though.

Seems like it's not too late. Plenty of various additions available if that's what you mean.

Excellent find, bossman. Call me crazy, but I like his stuff from that era. So rough and "basic" (that's not quite the word I'm looking for...)

I see some every now and then at my local used bookstores, but I never pick them up...maybe it's finally time.
