Its similar to drawing numbers for Bingo. I suspect that is what they were inspired by.

I'd suggest posting that to odd74.proboards.com too; lots of Holmes love there. It really looks extra-fine in the photos. I was lucky to score just the book in brand new condition, but the whole set with module; almost want to keep it secret and steal it for 30 bucks .

Oh, and use that zoom feature on the photo's, the outside of the box does have some damage. Its only the stuff on the inside that looks pristine.
