We roll 4d6, drop the lowest and assign at will. I'm relatively lax about it since there really isnt a huge bonus for getting higher rolls.

My Deskjet 6122 is quite suitable to my purposes. It doesnt hurt that I have a fairly steady supply of free ink cartridges for it and that it has a duplexer.

You may want to subtract 1 from that init score because of the disparity of attribute modifiers between C&C and D&D 3.x but, other than that, your solution should work quite well.
