Late 13th - early 14th century. The best armor available is platemail... none of that fancy full plate stuff exists.

1) Swords and Deviltry. Lankhmar! Fafhrd, the Gray Mouser, sword fights and winsome girls and lots of drinking... 2) A conversion of the old Oriental Adventures book would be great, too. 3) (reserved, need to ponder) Great ideas. 1) I love anything related to Lankhmar... digging it more than Conan ...

Re: If you could turn any 3 books into C&C supplements...
Chivalry & Sorcery was a product of Fantasy Games Unlimited - I remember Scott Bizar and his wife from when they ran the Waterloo Game Shoppe in Stonybrook, NY and playtested C&S there. Great game but very math intensive. An unofficial edition, written by one of the original authors (his pa...

Re: Shaking up the Ranger and starting gold for some classes
It all sounds good to me and makes sense.
I let rangers use light (such as leather & padded) and medium armor (such as chainmail) BUT penalize any dex-based abilities by 3 when wearing encumbering armor types.

Re: Attribute Generation
I use the old 4d6, drop the lowest die, method. For ability scores above 18 I use the following (based on old AD&D): 19: +4 instead of +3/+7 (averaged to 5) 20: +5 instead of +3/+8 (averaged to 5.5) 21: +6 instead of +4/+9 (averaged to 6.5) 22: +7 instead of +4/+10 (averaged to 7) 23: +8 instead...

I do this instead Combat Marauder: Rangers possess an extraordinary ability to combat their most common foes; goblinoids, kobolds, orcs and giants, due to intense training and study of their enemy‘s fighting techniques. When fighting bugbears, goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, orcs or giants (giants, tr...

Re: My houserule site is moving
ADD3 sure is tickling my fancy. I printed up a couple locally on 80 lb paper and had them comb bound (I printed out the prime version a year or so ago and had them bound with a paper cover as well) and I have to say the books rock! Comb binding seem to be better than the paper binding I had before....

Re: My houserule site is moving
The primeless version has been working out great for us and has become the new standard. Some players grumbled at first but now they don't miss it at all. I was just wondering how things were going with Unearthed Arcana. Have you made any progress on it lately? I really like what I see so far, espe...

Re: My houserule site is moving
UA is turning into a DMG/CKG. At this point it's over 250 pages long. I'm slowly adding DMG material (encounter tables, XP rules, etc) and formatting the beast of a thing. If I ever finish it'll be beautiful! Now that the primeless rules are my standard rules (and have gotten good reviews from peopl...

Re: My houserule site is moving
Thanks for the kind words Papercut. If I ever finish my Unearthed Arcana/DMG hybrid (which has turned out to be my CKG) I'll have to work on my Monster Manual before working on an OGL version of my game. That said, I'd happily share my .doc files with anyone who wants to undertake that task! ;) Now ...

Re: Trailer for "The Dungeon Master"
That's the only movie I've ever walked out of. I went to it hoping to see a D&D movie and, instead, lost sanity. Then again that happened with the D&D movie that was put out in 2000.Relaxo wrote:oh my god.
that movie (1985) looks amazingly bad.
Remember previews like that? how hokey!

Here's a little rules clarification for Surprise (this came up in my brother's campaign). The changes are incorporated into my "primeless" version of AD&D3 (which is the system I'm now using). Surprise: A surprised party is caught unprepared, becoming aware of their opponent a moment b...

Cool. We had fun with Wild Magic too. One player wound up nearly killing the entire party when, instead of casting sleep on a nearby enemy, cast a fireball that caught most of the party in its radius. Oof!

Re: My houserule site is moving
Hi Durn, My brother and I are both running games and both noticed that characters either rocked at making saving throws/ability checks or sucked. His players, more than mine, didn't like that the Prime bonus totally overshadowed ability score bonuses and, at low levels, level bonuses (the bonus you ...

Re: My houserule site is moving
Thanks guys! I've been working (ever so slowly) on Unearthed Arcana and will (eventually) post what I've done.
I've made a few changes to the site, such as removing the Greyhawk content and giving it its own page. I've also cross-linked my pages a little better.

Re: Scaling Primes
Hey Colin, When I tried to overhaul C&C, I set the Challenge Base at 15 for all checks and gave Primes a +5 bonus (which offset the HUGE difference between Prime/Non-Prime checks by a little bit). In gameplay Prime bonuses still rubbed my players the wrong way so I'm now doing the following: The...

As a fan of the Pendragon RPG I really like this treatment of Celtic mythology. I saved this just in case I ever get a game of Pendragon running again, as it's a great overview of Celtic gods.

Re: Houserule question
I'd never houserule out primes for Castles and Crusades itself, but perusing the AD&D 3 rules, it feels right. Maybe it's because taking it out makes it maybe more of its own thing as opposed to a C&C mod of sorts. And the idea of a generic +1 bonus to all skill checks and saving throws is ...

Re: Illusionist healing spells
Why don't we just assume in the opposite direction then? Illusionist healing IS shadow magic (just like shadow evocation and shadow conjuration). But since allies always choose to fail their save, they get full effect instead of the "lessened percentage" effect one would get from a resist...

Thanks guys!
