Re: I might just leave RPGs behind, or my tale of burnout

I burned out for a very long time. Years. For a variety of reasons. It's natural. Don't try to force it. Enjoy any other interests you may have, especially your kid. When the time is right (and it sounds like the CoC game was good medicine), it will find a way to work for you again. Maybe, out of th...

Re: RPGnet has Prime Questions

Hi all, I am the poster of the RPG.net post. To be fair, I am actually in complete agreement with everything you've all said. As I posted on RPG.net, I don't think there actually is a problem with primes, since you can build the niche you want. My true question is "can we start thinking of the new ...

Re: Ability checks - How often to you call for them?

I try to avoid calling for rolls, but there is a large player base now conditioned to ask for rolls whenever they want to do something. "Can I roll to see if I climb the tree?" Sometimes it's hard to remember to say, "No, you just climb the tree." I think I still prefer the guideline that rolls are ...

Re: RPGnet has Prime Questions

I avoid RPGnet as one of those "wretched hive" sort of places.

I'd simply suggest that the OP

1) Read the PHB more carefully

2) Come over here for more clarification

Re: Tales from the Table: How Are You Using/Planning to Use

I'm running my homebrew as described in the Crusader Hammer & Anvil articles. We're into some dungeon exploration beneath Acton Dinsbury now.

It's pretty awesome when the players (not just the characters) realize that everything they've been standing on is just a veneer.

Re: Rogue Back Attack

Do you allow for a rogue to be flanking a character and the roll -10 hide to get off a back attack on target? Just being behind a target isn't good enough. You have to be unnoticed. If the rogue is stationary and hidden, and the target passes by without noticing the rogue, then no roll needed. If t...

Re: Monster and villain tactics

Even basic humanoid raiding parties use cover, misdirection, flanking, and missile fire effectively. How effectively depends on their training and intelligence, but they basically do not survive in their highly competitive milieu without it. (Thanks, Gary, had to get that word in) They are also able...

Re: Alchemy instead of magic

Grab an older novel called "Master of the Five Magics" by Lyndon Hardy, if you can find a copy. There's an interesting take on alchemy therein. The characteristics of the items going in determine what comes out, and success is in repetition and percentages. So, if you know that a diamond has a certa...

Re: How do people handle spell components?

My home brew uses the same component for everything, at least for now. The caveat is that every spell is necromantic, and if they need a component, that component is blood. If the blood was taken from a willing donor, the spell has a markedly different effect than if taken from an unwilling donor. T...

Re: We need a new forum

Yeah, there's no good fit. The C&C Society forum was supposed to play that role, but it says Society News so that's not obvious. The forum probably needs more work done to it to combine categories, etc. but that's above me right now. :) I just came back, so I don't want to overstep any bounds, even ...

Re: How do people handle spell components?

I don't see the benefit of line-item accounting. I do see the benefit of requiring special, expensive components. I see the benefit of requiring a special focus item, in some cases. I do think that it is important to tell players that components are still necessary, even though the accounting is goi...

Some incredibly cool looking stuff there. Very imaginative. Pricey, but that's to be expected.

But having a set for fantasy vs. sci fi vs. horror would be awesome.

Re: Level advancement

Just a brief comment - I seem to remember at one point there was a rule or suggestion that XP for defeating a monster didn't mean you had to kill it. You had to overcome it. This doesn't mean you get full monster XP for hiding in a shrub while a hill giant passes by, but if you execute a plan to sne...

Actually thinking that most non-announcement forums, if not all, should be combined.

Very granular forum divisions are great for forums with high traffic. There are effectively only 2-3 living forums here.

Re: Hey Trolls, can you open up the CK...

Yeah, but the problem with that is the people who can give an "official" answer rarely show up around here anymore. Even then, it seems like half the time the official answer is "do it however you see fit." I agree. I also think that the CKG and some of the other expansion books have widened the po...

Re: Well, it happened again, gents

Everyone wants to play, but very few want to DM. Many possible reasons for that, but when you can't get even one experienced person out of a group to agree to do it with what is supposed to be the preferred system, there's Trouble in River City.

It is amazing how that sorts itself out.

Lemme test

There's a button in the full editor, and the tag works.

I checked the board settings and BBCode is enabled. That's the only toggle I can see. There's nothing I found that would specifically stop strikethrough.

Unless it was disabled before, and someone changed it without updating this thread. :)

It's meant for official answers to rule questions. It was named "Keeper Advice" as a play on "Sage Advice", which served the same purpose in Dragon. General subjective questions involving opinion and how-tos are nearly always better off in this forum. I try to move them when I notice someone has pos...

I always thought that the most effective way to get a Hasbro or Pathfinder player to switch to C&C is make him/her the DM.

Re: Well, it happened again, gents

I tend to be in the "life is short, don't play a game that you think sucks" camp. I won't play any Hasbro version or Pathfinder, for the same reasons that I migrated to C&C in the first place. I spent years having my enjoyment for tabletop fantasy gaming eviscerated by rules bloat. It took me years ...
