Good to see you too, Zudrak. I have the same goal - I want to stay inspired, and this is the best place to do that. :)

Re: Training for level up

I've gone back and forth on this. I've houseruled training requirements before, then never enforced the houserule. Frankly, with enormous amounts of treasure obtained over time, PCs need somewhere to spend it. It's the game logistics of that notion that can be a complete pain in the ass. I've always...

As far as the customs form...well....I'd rather not advertise the precise configuration. :) It may come in handy in the future. I think I know what you are alluding to, I frequently ask for the same thing and TLG is very accommodating. It helps a lot. I guess TLG is all about fighting evil empires....

Aurumvorax

Just received Classic Monsters, and was ecstatic about the aurumvorax. One of my favorite monsters of all time.

It's the honey badger on steroids. It takes what it wants.

I just received my books

Miracle of miracles, less than a week through Canada Post.

And the Trolls never cease to amaze me. The Customs decree was *precisely* what it needed to be for rapid transit.

You gents are A #1. And the books are *very* nice.

It goes to show you how long I've been out of it - I had no idea this existed. I am going to set this up very soon. Just to have the ability to do a remote session is a big bonus - it's difficult when kids are in the mix to get everyone in the same room all of the time.

Re: Question regarding 'Survival' (Ranger Special Ability)

I'm going to depart from Ser here, a bit. "2-8" in my view equates to "2d4." Foraging should always have random results because availability of food is not always a constant. So, the ranger can feed 2d4 automatically, after 8 hours of foraging and hunting. Occasionally, there is a very lucky day, an...

Re: Using monsters and such in a game

In my current homebrew, I have a class of creatures that have characteristics of undead (minus the rotting, of course) but are not undead. I took the undead "hierarchy" and replaced each level with a functional equivalent of the new monster type. Essentially I used the current undead stats as a skel...

Re: BtH and the Classes

Interesting thoughts in the OP. Of course, it would require a restructuring of almost every AC in the various monster books. :) After chewing this over for a few minutes, there are some considerations to take into account. 1) Scaling damage output by level instead of hit bonus is still scaling, just...

Re: I can't use published settings anymore

With the A-series so far I have overcome my paralysis with flowcharts, mind-maps, and lists of triggers between people, places and things (BOB at the INN knows about the WATERFALL, KING JOHN is STILL ALIVE in MODULE 3 kind of stuff.) You can still let things go to hell, but then you have stuff you ...

Re: Racial weapon skills

I can think of several narrative, societal reasons why a non-classed elf NPC would have the full +1 and not the -3. The beauty of C&C is that you can handle it however you want. Having lived through and contributed to 1st printing C&C, I will say this: Some rules were left vague on purpose specifica...

Re: I can't use published settings anymore

I like the A series. There's some great stuff there. I had a hard time remembering: - NPC names and "who is who," along with personality details. This gets better over time, but it takes a while. - Order of events - cause/effect relationships - if the PCs do this, then remember this completely diffe...

Re: Racial weapon skills

The text isn't wrong even with the -3 interpretation. The difference is simply one of perceived degree. EXCEPT. The text states that the PC starts with a +1 to hit. A -3 to hit isn't even consider "proficient"... But, another PHB clarification for the 6th printing for sure as it could be either way...

Re: I can't use published settings anymore

Sounds like you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself man. Just remember that the PCs can only inhabit a small area of anywhere. As long as you can be clear on that area, who cares? Avoid scenarios that are all-continent/world encompassing and you should be fine. (Which is where a lot of guys lo...

I thought it was about "Role Play" and collaborative story telling? Leave resource management to 4th edition  LOL!! 8-) Sometimes it isn't the story, but the game. And one aspect of the game is making cost/benefit resource allocation decisions. Picking spells, deciding how many iron rations ...

Re: Instant Effects Question...Petrification

Having been the SOB who throws petrifying creatures around like candy, I always do two things: 1) Fair warning: there are always signs. Lore or rumors, telltale perfect statues, etc. 2) Provide some means of undoing petrification. Spell access, magic items (potions or scrolls). The small mirror is s...

Re: Racial weapon skills

This implementation would give a 1st level elf wizard the same BTH with a sword as a 1st level human fighter. YMMV, but I wouldn't go this way. The mental contortions required to take this: "Elves are taught the ways of combat at a young age, and their long lives allow them to become skilled in wea...

I can't use published settings anymore

I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. The short form is that I can't use published settings anymore. I like them. There are some I absolutely love. There are some that I wish very much I could use for a game. But I can't. Because I won't ever be able to *know* the material well eno...
