Re: Prime vs Non-Prime

Abilities that don't list an attribute don't require Siege checks, so far as i know. For example, a Sneak Attack provides a damage bonus; it's not an attribute check. The rogue doesn't have to try to do extra damage, he just does automatically (assuming the conditions of the sneak are met, of course...

Re: AD&D Second Edition: Anyone Do C&C Conversion?

Ah, been so busy with work and research at school that i've not been able to check in much. But nice when i do i find a thread of particular interest to me... :) I use an awful lot of material from 2nd ed, but with the SIEGE mechanic. The bard has played fine for me (but i also play Birthright where...

I like Smaug from the Hobbit movies for sure. But what about Draco from Dragonheart? A dragon with the voice of Sean Connery deserves consideration.

Codex books - reviews?

Hi all- I'm sure someone here has checked out or uses the Codex books (Nordica, Celtarum, Slavorum, Classicum, Germania). What are your thought on them? What sort of nifty stuff (classes, gear, rules) are included? I've poked around online to learn more about them, but the only real reviews i can fi...

Re: When something is declared "dead"...

See the hit points section of combat in the CKG (pg 314 in the latest). There are optional rules there for graduated damage impacting skill checks, and rules for dealing with massive damage. Thanks. Interesting stuff. Though i have an original CKG, not the latest edition, so not completely sure i'm...

Re: When something is declared "dead"...

And what you are discussing there is pretty much WHY the System Shock roll rule was in place. Because hit points were abstract and catastrophic damage or other instances could overwhelm 'the abstract nature' of hit points. But of course it fell victim to the whole 'power creep' mentality that infec...

Re: SIEGE Ability Checks as To-Hit rolls

I have actually experimented with such a system. It does change things up a bit with regards to certain class effectiveness in combat, but i didn't find it to be a bad experience. Sure your high-dex characters can then hit with ranged weapons better than a fighter. But they're in the back using rang...

Re: When something is declared "dead"...

I always look at HP loss as not nessicarily a direct result of physical damage. It is the loss of the subjective hard to define (and therefore measure) elements of combat. Luck, stamina, reaction time, etc etc etc getting worn away as the fight goes on and on. This was my understanding of HP as wel...

Re: When something is declared "dead"...

I like forcing a "you're nearly out" for PCs. Full Function to 0 hp. Your first 1/3 of - hp (keep in mind dead for me is -CON score) you are largely immobile (fully prone on the ground, no real strength), conscious, feeble crawl at best.. no spell casting, but you can sort of talk.. think "dying ma...

Re: Mighty Propelled Weapons CKG "Pull"

Naw. Mostly strength, though technique can make up for a bit of lacking STR. (discuss thrower in Track myself) With javelins STR is augmented by the running start. Knife and hatchet throwing are pure strength for range but technique for effectiveness. (will the stupid thing stick in the wood or han...

Re: When something is declared "dead"...

However, hearing about 5e, I think I like the 'death saving throw' idea of being unconscious at -0 or below but not dead until 3 con saves are failed. Though, with C&C I'd say it should be CHA not CON. I'd have to play 5e before I'd say I like it better than Tree's That reminds me of something i di...

Re: Missile Weapons and ROF

Another consideration may be the setting itself (which could be related to roleplaying). Not all weapons are equally available in all regions. So an exotic weapon may be considerably more expensive or problematic otherwise. Further, the crossbow has a history of being banned (too easy for the peasan...

Re: Missile Weapons and ROF

If that is the case, why would anyone take anything other than the heavy crossbow? If the ROF is the same across all weapons then the heavy crossbow is the clearly superior choice. Shouldn't there be a tradeoff? For the same reason that someone would take a long sword over a great scimitar. By dama...

Re: Mighty Propelled Weapons CKG "Pull"

Last up, AD&D 2nd had a rule bows were numbered based on stength. If you picked up a bow with a STR 17 and your strength was a 15 you could not use the bow. If you had a strength greater than the bow, you could only use the damage rating of the bow (i.e., a strength 17 bow, would only allow the str...

Re: Missile Weapons and ROF

I don't have my book handy, but as i recall everything has a rate of fire of 1/round unless the weapon description says otherwise. You are correct that AD&D had 2/round for bows, which made them quite potent. But that is not the case in C&C.

I haven't played crazy-high levels (most of mine have topped out around 10th), but up to that point i haven't had an issue with how saves work. I don't have a problem with wizardly magic being scary at high levels. It's just a matter of what you're used to and what you want to accept. I'd say that s...

Re: Playing with Evil Characters

Evil is individualistic by its very nature. I disagree with this. If that is the case, then there is no point to having a chaos/law axis for evil characters because you're lumping them all with the same behavior. It's the difference between the ethical and moral axes. From the PH: "Lawful character...

Of course, i have seen a number of characters who would be described as evil despite their official alignment. Re: Playing with Evil Characters

What about "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"? Perhaps both the good and evil character share a common enemy or goal which cannot be accomplished without the other. Thus it is in their best interest to work together.

A paladin and an assassin would have much fun with that scenario... heh.

I do find it "funny" that we in the RPG fandom, support a product by purchasing it (or in the case of a Kickstarter, purchasing it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of time)....then in some cases end up doing much of the editing, etc for free. (I've done this several times myself for different games). Not...
