Re: Anyone doing historical settings?

Nice stuff Fizz. I remember in the deep history of Cerilia, that the elves never knew divine magic with the coming of the great migrations. Do you remember if the dwarves of ancient times had clerical magic? If not, wow, dwarven runecasters from the Vikings books is a great idea. I don't think it's...

as well as a campaign mimicking the events of Eaters of the Dead (13th Warrior). Ha! I too once did an adventure based on that. I love that book / movie. (Good soundtrack too.) and the like is used for my Birthright campaign that I will someday get off the ground. I used elements from the AD&D ...

Re: Anyone doing historical settings?

I too really liked (actually, still like) the HR books from TSR. The Vikings book is my favorite, and contains the best treatment of the Runecaster class i've seen done. Simple, but different. The Berserker class is pretty good too. I have (awhile ago now) run games using the book. It wasn't histori...

And I don't get why they made such a big deal about offering options for backgrounds in 5E. I agree, i've not been big on backgrounds. In some ways it makes sense, but if they had a background shouldn't they have a level? To me, in 5E it feels like backgrounds as well as paths are a way of giving m...

Re: Middle Earth Mashup

Feats are a love/hate thing for a lot of people. Some people see them as options, others as restrictions. I've viewed them both ways in the past. I too have seen them that way too. Ultimately, i came to think of them as special abilities that are not unique to a class. That is- any character could ...

You are certainly not alone Dynel. Among the other stories here, i too have had little time the last few years. Re: Creating a New World

Sounds like you have plenty of ideas. World-building can be fun, but daunting. And to be honest, it might never get finished because I'm always coming up with ideas. That's ok, you can always come up with more ideas and storylines faster than they can be played out. There are many ways to make maps....

Fantastic Heroes & Witchery

Hi all- Looking around the web the other day and i came across a old-school system called Fantastic Heroes & Witchery . Of particular note, i really like how they handle divine classes. I have never liked cleric / druid spells, feel too "wizardy" to me. Instead FH&W has a separate ...

Interesting idea. It opens the door nicely to a preferred class for each race. Do you have other combinations as well? A halfling-rogue bonus, or a gnome-illusionist bonus?

Re: Did I do wrong to weaken the encounter?

The big fight at the end is always tricky... you could have had the big guy, say "you are not worth my time" and depart leaving his minions to be the big fight.. saving the big guy for another day.. they will burn with outrage, but know the big guy was right, they barely beat the minions....

Re: Did I do wrong to weaken the encounter?

Generally, if something goes awry that is not the players' fault, i won't punish them for it. But if they miss something, then too bad. It does depends on the type of players you have. Your batch sounds like they might be accepting of a TPK given that it was their fault. Other groups though dislike ...

Re: C&C and 5e

Advantage/disadvantage is simply and easy and stupid as hell. Adv/dis is equal to a +5/-5 mod so EVERY single modifier is +5/-5. They don't stack so its just as easy to hit a guy with a sword in the dark standing on the ground as it is underwater or falling off a cliff in a sandstorm while poisoned...

I don't recall that from the 5e PH (though i have not read it exhaustively). Is this your own house rule, or something from the 5e DMG, or other?

Re: C&C and 5e

Am I missing something? In 5E, "advantage" or "disadvantage" are not something you hang onto - it's situational. The GM determines that your attack roll (for whatever reason) has "advantage", and on your roll you roll 2 d20s instead of 1, and take the best roll (instea...

Re: non-Vancian magic

I actually like the idea of skill checks to successfully cast. However - insert my normal I don't have huge experience with running a mage or gming a magic heavy game etc etc etc - Plus, my default setting is lower magic than the average standard. With that, what may fit in my idea would be to much...

Re: non-Vancian magic

Because your fighter gets to try all day long. The spellcasters have a very finite number of tries. Ah, but when we (or at least myself) propose the skill check solution, we mean to replace the Vancian system- there is no table. So the wizard can try all day long, just like the fighter can. Plus, t...

That is exactly what i think too. Heck, anyone can swing a sword, but shaping / manipulating magical energies, that's hard. If anything requires a check, it's that. :)

sovereign stone has a very unique casting system which neither involves Magic Points or Vancian casting. Oh yes, i forgot about that one. I have not used the version in the CKG, but i have had a lot of success with other non-Vancian systems. As i see it, there are two main options- either a spell check system or a spell point system. I really like the idea of the spell check system. After all, fighters can't automatically hit in comba...

Can you explain the "bounded" to a non-guru RPGer like myself? :) Hi Cap- 5E D&D took a significant turn in their standard design philosophy. In past editions, characters gained bonuses (either for combat, or skills, or anything else) at every level, and there was technically no limit...

You might want to check out Freeport, by Green Ronin. While originally written for 3E, they did create a C&C version you can use. It's gritty, spooky, detailed. Lots of good material for multiple adventures, and can be tweaked to fit into pretty much any setting.

The spells...well...it is only 4 first level spells by 12th level plus the three healing spells. Not a great deal.
