Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
I've been reading Kent David Kelly's Hawk & Moor (the unofficial history of D&D). A lot of the material is hearsay from internet forums and subject to revision, but it's an engaging read and I find the early days fascinating - basically creating a hobby (and industry) from scratch. On volume III, re...

Re: Torch and Lantern burn durations
I did break down and google zither; still, a little surprising that such a relatively obscure (and impractical) thing would show up in a generic equipment list!
The 3e SRD is a good idea.

Re: Torch and Lantern burn durations
The CKG actually warns against tracking wear and tear on individual pieces of equipment as not worth the effort; the chart on pg. 182 could be used I suppose but it doesn't differentiate lighting from other gear. The C&C PHB doesn't offer any equipment descriptions, where this info would usually be ...

Re: Rappan Athuk
In the heydey I ran Rappan Athuk to it's conclusion, in that the PCs encountered Orcus. 2 party members didn't make it out of that titanic battle, but the Lost Lands were saved... if only for a short time. That sounds epically cool . . . my fear would always be that the Name Battle would end anticl...

No fiction currently, but I am going through the massive new Middle Earth From Script to Screen and The Golden Age of DC Comics. Good graphic design, good idea generators.

Re: Addicted to Megadungeons
I've never run a megadungeon, though I've read through 1 or 2 (I have Blue Medusa and it is dripping with weird flavor!). I guess my issues are 1) it seems like a huge burden on the GM, constructing and/or maintaining a complex so large it has its own plausible ecosystem - living, breathing, changin...

Re: Castle Keepers Guide
I actually find charts more "appealing" only because they can make me think of things I hadn't considered in that combination before. Preference in presentation I guess. That pretty much sums up why I love Ultimate Toolbox. Hmm. . Treebore, I have the other 4 on your list but not the Toolbox. . . w...

Re: YES! GLORIOUS MONSTERS! YESSS!
Maybe gnomes start out, er 'normal' but get more animalistic as they age over the centuries? In any case, I don't mind artists trying something new and different. I'm in for the monster kickstarter, but am curious what people value in the binder? To me, seems bulky and prone to falling apart as oppo...

I'm sure I was one of many, but remember posting right here that I'd love to see a combined monster tome. Bravo! I just pledged and look forward to this.
Hoping for an expanded Gods & Monsters at some point, also.

Re: Empyrea for C&C
All the public drama aside, it certainly became clear that the original $250k kickstarter didn't have enough momentum to succeed. Yet, it seemed the announced, revised kickstarter with a more modest goal of c. $90,000 would have been a success. But then Frank cancelled those plans. :? I would person...

Re: Empyrea for C&C
24 hour news & social media does empower the court of public opinion to try, convict and sentence someone on flimsy evidence. I admit fallibility on this - I was really starting to think badly of FM without all the facts (which I suppose we'll never have). On Empyrea , I am curious to see it as it's...

Re: level of C&C output
I'm a newbie, not a veteran TLG supporter, but my one KS experience was the 7th printing of the PHB - arrived early, iirc. I suppose that doesn't count as there was no new content. But further afield, my experience with other rpg company kickstarters - most of them are at least 3-6 months behind the...

Re: Empyrea for C&C
The fact that Mentzer used his (imagined) weight in the industry to threaten to blackball people is pretty disturbing. I'm tempted to think this is some form of dementia or other condition since it seems out of character. Also, if Tenkar is to be believed (and I do), lawyers are now involved in an a...

Re: Empyrea for C&C
As backers know by now, it appears the plug has been completely pulled on this KS and it won't be re-booted. Mr. Mentzer sent a personal note that seems to re-affirm his commitment to publishing Empyrea, but his decision is that kickstarter is not the right venue (I suppose we could post his update ...

Re: Empyrea for C&C
I admit I'm kinda shocked it's still only at 22% or so of goal. The 'all or nothing' thing is kind of a killer - it would be nice if they reach $100k that something is produced.

I believe a signed Darlene map is one of the add-ons and (if the KS is successful) I'm definitely going for that! Will look nice next to the original Greyhawk and Haunted Highlands maps of hers, framed on my wall.

Re: Castles & Crusades What's Next
Now that I have many of the C&C 'core' books, I keep thinking a big, thick, consolidated 'Monster Tome' would be nice (and could incorporate the Unclean). In color, with fan submissions and some new art, the kind of thing that seems to do well on Kickstarter. . .

Re: The French Terror – Social Unrest in a game world ?
I think about it every so often, but bump up against the 'broadsheet' problem. It seems like in our world, printing presses spurred social change, not just by inspirational ideas, but by promoting literacy among the uneducated classes (a process that took centuries). In a typical pre-industrial frpg...

Re: C&C and 5e
I think ogre is most upset with the lack of finesse/segmentation of the modifiers. In 5e, you basically have advantage (on average, c. +4.5 to the roll), disadvantage (-4.5) or both/neither (0). There is no official rule for say, 'slight advantage' or 'heavy disadvantage'. Is the time saved not look...

The 'use it or lose it' thing is what a lot of folks don't like about 5e's advantage; I'm wondering if it can be combined successfully with the Fate Point system in the CKG.

Seems to me that between spell resistance (SR) and saving throws, magic already has an in-built chance of failure (at least against powerful beasties). But I do like the idea of 'on the fly' spell-casting, with possible mis-fires!

Re: Kickstarter for 7th Printing PHB up [look carefully]
I'm a newbie, received my 7th printing PHB vis the Kickstarter last week. Just wanted to say: As an old 1e player, reading the Assassin, Knight, Monk, etc was like revisiting old friends. I like the colorful, informal writing style; so many game books read like technical manuals these days. Illustra...
