Re: D&D 5th Edition Discussion

I never had any issue with my character being dead as long as it was not because I did some stupid stunt. If the game just went that way, so be it. I often found the death allowed me to try new characters/ideas out. As a GM I was not against resurrection so much as I made it rare so that it didn't b...

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?

RPGNow had the Codex Celtarum on sale per an email I received. So I went and bought it and began reading it last night.

Re: Magic items ~ Ring of Three Wishes

I have to temper that desire when I look at how many +1 sword my players have made over the years that had very little in the way of interesting history. Same with other low level items. I save history (of the type a bard 1,000 years later would know) for major items. Good point. Everything in mode...

Re: Adding Classes

Tinkering and creating is FUN, its part of the game, at least for some. Creating or even trying to create anything, a class, a monster, a magic item, a list of cool herbs, etc. is all great stuff.. well it can be for those who like that sort of thing. If someone didn't tinker to make things differe...

Re: Adding Classes

While it is entirely possible to create any character based solely on the fighter, it is less exciting to do so. Perhaps my warrior gets his endowment through magical tattoos. Perhaps that makes him a magic-user, or a cleric. Except he wears no armor and fights better than either of them (and both ...

Re: Adding Classes

That's one of the BIG reasons I like the EPIC RPG, every character you play is connected to a guild/organization, and its that connection, and the role playing that goes with it is what makes the character unique. While Paranoia was a silly game, that is one of the things I really liked in their sy...

Re: Adding Classes

One thing I have done in the past is just re-skin a class. The player wanted a "Knight of the Order of the Red Rose". The way he described the character, I had him create a Cleric. Worked just fine. No new class needed. :D

Thanks Guys. The M&T came as part of the bundle I bought from RPGNow. So I was unsure if I needed the classic Monsters. Now I know I can buy something else.

Now to pick what to buy..... :D

Monster Manual Question

What is the difference between the "Classic Monsters The Manual" and the "Monsters and Treasures"?

Do they cover the same monsters? Do I need both or is one better than the other?

Help this old man not waste his money, please. :D

Re: D&D 5th Edition Discussion

I think what people notice is how fast the first couple of levels come. It seemed that the first couple sessions we leveled every time. But by fourth it had slowed down and by 5th it was more reasonable. But I will say, it all depends on the table as well. Do you play three hour or five hour session...

Adding Classes

I was looking at Dragonsfoot and downloaded "The Netbook of Classes". I read through it.

This made me curious, do you use classes from other sources? Do you feel the need for them?

If you have any particular favorites from other sources I would love to hear that as well. :D

It's not flashy and wont rend a bad guy asunder, but Cure Light Wounds (1st level cleric; 2nd level druid and illusionist) can save the party's bacon at low levels. Also, no need to rely on to hit or saving throws for its effect to occur. Or help send a party member on the way . . to death! A tank ...

... I always preferred the magic items to mean something other than just a random result on some table. I agree 100% with this thought for most magic items. History, names, unusual features all can give a magic item a level of fun way beyond "a +1 Long Sword". I will put even more effort for player...

Re: Magic items ~ Ring of Three Wishes

Talking your way past monsters, or figuring out how to go around them, will have the same rewards as killing them. It's been that way since 1st Ed D&D. I don't remember that changing. But, I didn't play 4E D&D so maybe I missed a new trend... I have to agree, I have always given out XP for "resolvi...

I don't push the alignments too hard, but I do watch for trends. If you say you are good but keep doing evil acts I do call you on it. But I reject the idea that one act, in and of itself, would change your core "alignment". My one exception is with Paladins. Because their whole focus is based on th...
