Lots of good old threads....

I have been going backwards and reading some of the older threads. There is some great conversations and ideas just waiting to be mined out of there.

Yes, I am resisting the temptation to necro some threads, but I just have to say: There is quite a bit of good stuff here.

Re: Move and Attack - How about Attack and Move?

Based on the rules as I understand them, I would not have any issue with attack then move if the situation seemed logical to me. Although I do wonder how often I would really want to attack and then move half my move. Most combats seem like they would be closer than that to the other action. Of cour...

Re: Total Newbie

"serleran" would be the nom de plume, actually. But, when I do real writing, I use my name. It'd be Robert Doyel. Spelled that way on purpose because it's right... and has a cool meaning. Monsters and Treasure would be the big deal, I suppose. But there are also Engineering Dungeons, Engineering Ca...

Re: Total Newbie

I would recommend anything written by me. Cool, so do I look for Serleran or do you want to share your nom de plume? He's the author of the M&T and other stuff. R- Thanks, but now I am back to the same question: M&T lists two key authors and four additional authors. Serleran is not listed among the...

Re: Multi-Class Question

I prefer to ditch multi-class, class-and-a-half, and dual class characters. Instead, I just use my own system to determine XP requirements, and then I ignore them as I do not use XP anymore, rather a goal-driven level thing. Pretty sure the rules, strangely, are fairly straightforward with little a...

Re: Encumbrance Value for Worn Items

It also allows me the room to still say "Yeah, that 50 lb. chest keeps you unencumbered, but it's bulky and is still gonna mess with ya." I'd also tend to impose exhaustion penalties for being encumbered over a period of days since these weight limits are "high". I think the chest is a great exampl...

Re: Encumbrance Value for Worn Items

Plus let's face it, a mule only works if you are able to protect that mule, it's no good in the underworld. That's not to say it's always useless, but only reliable in certain situations, such as long overland travel. Protecting the mule while underground usually also means you have to hire people,...

Re: C&C Settings Question

Sometimes a good way to break in new players is to roll up the character; base PC only, stats, race, languages, backstory, but not equip. That is a great idea. In a way that is what I do to myself when learning a new Rule Set. Read the book once cover to cover. Then start with Character creation, I...

Re: Encumbrance Value for Worn Items

Yup. I never advise PC's. I let them find out where the "potholes" of life are for them selves. Overall I agree with this point of view. As a GM I do remind players of things that would be obvious to their players, but beyond that I let them figure out things on their own. As for the purchase of a ...

Re: C&C Settings Question

I think some poison material was added in the 2nd printing, barbarian class was redone, and 40 something illusion spells were added in the 4th printing, encumbrance changed a bit in the fifth print. Paladin's smite tweaked ever so slightly in the 6th. Attribute mechanics have always remained the sa...

This would, IMO, reflect how the class impacts your future HP but your race gave you a basic "starting point".

Multi-Class Question

Ok, sat and created a few dozen characters to help me make sure I was understanding the various dynamics. When I went to create a multi-class I came across a question that made me wonder if I was doing it right. As I understood the XP progression for multi-class, the formula would be: (XP needed for...

Even though I recommend you play C&C by the book your first time out. That way you can get a good in depth feel for what you think C&C is lacking, and then house rule it to give it what you feel it needs for your next campaign. This is what I had in mind. I find it is best to learn the rule set as ...

C&C Settings Question

When I start to learn a rule set I like to base my first few excursions using a setting that is made for the rule set.

Based on my limited exposure to the C&C forum and website, there seems to be more than one setting available. So what setting would you recommend I use at first?

Thanks

Example: 15' ladder at a 10 degree angle up to loft (ladder sticks past loft floor by 5') with a goblin waiting at top with two PC's at bottom ready to come up? Grid vs Gridless Combat

I have used grid maps for many, many, years. But in the resent past I have played with gridless maps and the use of measure sticks or measure strings.

What is best for C&C? Does the rules lend itself better to grids or would gridless work with the C&C rules?

Re: D&D 5th Edition Discussion

I can see that. Some people like having a lot more specific rules to fall back on. Like 3.x games. That just was never the intention of the creator of D&D. Funny. IIRC 1e had a rule (and a table) for damn near everything. The only difference being, that 1e rules were alot harder to remember, due to...
