Re: New Low level undead request..
Ok. A vampiric plant of some type, like a thorn bush that envelops a supplicant (willing or unwilling) and turns them into a minor league vampire...minor league vampires of a couple of HD and they'll drink for 1d4/round if they get a latch onto you. (Not much more dangerous than stirges...but the PC...

Re: Low level "magic items" with character but little power
There was a fun 4e ability called Fey Step. Pretty sure that's what it was called. Basically it alllowed a 5 or 6 square minor teleportation. You could give your badger a collar that allowed him to do that. Call it a Collar of Ethereal Burrowing or something.

Re: Low level "magic items" with character but little power
Don't underestimate one-use stuff like oils and potions. Say the PCs come across a couple of vials labelled "orcsbane" which could be an oil you pour on your sword that gives you a hit bonus vs orcs that lasts one battle/x number of turns/a full day/whatever. Or the all powerful, but one use only, m...

Re: Ability checks - How often to you call for them?
I wonder though...by the book, C&C doesn't seem to set itself up as needing skill checks until something tough comes up. At 1st level, an easy check, if its prime, you still have to roll an 11 or better (give or take depending on stats) just to succeed at something. And if its not prime, then you ne...

Re: Ability checks - How often to you call for them?
What about using an ability check to indicate something besides absolute success or failure? In my last game I came up with a small scenario as a wilderness obstacle. The PCs came across a steep muddy and rocky ravine with a creek at the bottom of it. They had the option to try and find away around,...

Ability checks - How often to you call for them?
On the heels of the "RPGnet has Prime Questions" thread, it arose in me a curiosity. Aside from Saving Throws, how often, or under what game circumstances, do you actually call for a dice roll to perform a non-combat task? I've read some advice on the interwebs that suggests to never even bother cal...

On a related note, I've been looking at the 1st ed. Someone really liked the concept ... Well, at the time DnD w...

Re: Tales from the Table: How Are You Using/Planning to Use
I'm currently running a game for my 15 year old daughter, my better half, and my better half's best friend. Yup....I DM an all girl group. Were just doing basic C&C, no fancy houserules. Combat is with a battlegrid and minis. Everyone is a newb so everyone is learning. I was afraid they wouldn't lik...

I have a bunch of basic ones I made a while back. All 1st level, a fighter, rogue, wizard and cleric of human, halfling, dwarf and elf. Just used the same array for all of them. They're nothing fancy but good if you have an unexpected newb at the table. Pm me and ill send you the pdf if you want them.

Well see, thinking about it, I'm not really worried about the legalities of it. I wouldn't be selling anything, and if requested to cease and desist, I would. Easy peasy. I'm more interested in whether or not fans are encouraged to do this stuff by the guys who own C&C. It seems they are, but I just...

Yeah the OGL is largely like reading Chinese to me. I'm a gamer not a lawyer. But I'll see what I can make out on it.
I mean, I don't think putting together a group of encounters and statblocks to go along with them is gonna irk anyone...but I don't wanna step on any toes either.

Howdy all. Been on a bit of a creative streak lately and was curious about some of the finer points of offering fan created material online, with regards to C&C. My bent lately has been on dungeon encounters, adventures and such, and had just thought about maybe posting some of this stuff up somewhe...

I recall guys in my group obsessing over lowering their AC and heightening their damage output back in the 1e days before anyone ever heard of a computer RPG...so I'm not sure how the "character optomization = video games" thing comes into it. Re: What Weapon is Best
Not sure what your scenario is with the pre gens, but if I'm doing them I tend to give pregens something middle-of-the-road. Better than a pointed stick but not as outlandish as some of the more exotic stuff. (Shortsword, shortbow etc) Because the idea of finding better weapons and armor can be a mo...

Just looking for a little inspiration. A wild animal, I'm thinking a saber tooth cat, escapes his cage and is loose in the citadel. Re: Monster and villain tactics
D&D was created and designed by wargamers yes, but it was marketed at the non-wargaming masses. I think wargaming was falling out of vogue even then. Regarding tactics: There was a pretty good chapter on encounter design in an othewise non-memorable WOTC 3e book....I think it was called Dungeonscape...

Don't forget, they're allowed to run away. and poof! instant nemesis! hooray! Only problem with that is that, in my experience, is that by the time they figure out they should run, its too late. A Salamander is hit on a 19. A second level fighter probably has to roll a natural 14 (or thereabouts) t...

Re: What other games do you borrow from besides D&D/Pathfind
Dragon age stunts. I love them. They are fun and add spice to your combat. Yes, this means using 3d6 instead of d20, but there is something very satisfying about seeing those doubles pop up. However, I haven't figured out how to make it work for magic users. Especially since they don't roll to atta...

Re: What other games do you borrow from besides D&D/Pathfind
I guess its a matter of asking what your purpose is in having PC backstories in the first place. Honestly, as a DM I don't care a whit if the PC's background explains his ability set or not. He has the abilities, he rolled them or picked them out of the PHB. He has them and that's that. No backgroun...

Try living in Canada and wait for packages sent from the U.S. It seems the U.S.P.S. and Canada Post have had a model of expensive shipping for the crappiest service they sometimes go out of their way to provide. What other games do you borrow from besides D&D/Pathfinder?
Recently I snagged a used copy of the first Dragon Age RPG box. Not so much the play the game, but for inspiration...and I kinda like the dark tone to the stories and artwork in it. Anyway, its a pretty basic game, and it has a subsystem of stunts that's kind of neat. Basically, you roll an attack o...

That being said, I'll agree, no cheesecake on the screens themselves. The books can be closed and put away. But the screens are up non-stop.
