Re: Sinking Ships

I don't really want to nit pick too much, but a wooden ship hull would not be as porous and prone to absorption as you might think. They would almost certainly sealed with a heavy layer of pitch or tar. If you put a hole below the water line, it's just a matter of the weight of the water rushing in ...

Re: magic armor weight

I've always used 1/2 weight, unless it's something special like Elfin Chain Mail that's noteworthy for being light and unencumbered.

Re: Tome of Horrors Complete Pathfinder or Swords and Wizard

I just got the S&W version myself and it converts very easily from what I can tell. As far as I know there's another minor difference between the PF and S&W versions in that the S&W version has the blocks of flavor text for each monster and those are almost worth the price of admission alone for me ...

Re: Crazy idea...

I think the only way to find out if it really works is to play-test it. On face I'd say it "could" work, but it would depend an awful lot about how you quantify the challenge class for landing hits. So, flesh out your mechanics, simulate some combat rounds and record the results, repeat the process ...

I just splurged on Rappan Athuk and Stonehell hardbacks recently. I've barely scratched the surface (figuratively and literally) and I'm very impressed.

Re: D20, Next, & the Future

I picked up the 1st ed. AD&D reprints out of nostalgia and those are probably the last WoTC products I will ever purchase. 3.x and 4th ed D&D really burned me out on their products, especially with respect to their philosophy on game design and marketing. I still remember it pretty clearly - before ...

Re: preparing to run an adventure

On a more general note I highly recommend picking up a copy of "The Lazy Dungeon Master" from Mike Shea. It can be a real revelation and it definitely helped me learn how to streamline my prep time and learn to focus my efforts where and when they are needed rather than trying to flesh out every min...

Re: Most powerful/favourite magic weapon your character had

When I was a teenager, I played a paladin all the way up to level 9 in a 1st ed. AD&D game and I found an intelligent bastard sword +3 with a personality disorder. Whenever it was in the presence of another magical blade (intelligent or otherwise) it would invariably pipe up about the inferiority of...

Re: The Void is finally out!

I just got this in PDF. The PDF looks nice but I went crosseyed trying to figure the game out from it; the rules seem to appear randomly between long stretches of fluff. I think I'd get more out of the print version, or maybe the Quickstart, which is at RPGNow, but disappears when I try to download...

Re: Tips for drawing in PCs?

Oh one more note. TacoChemic, you said that your groups run small, in that case I'd consider letting anybody who wants to run a second character. It's not for everyone, but it could help add some flavor to the game and expands the types of challenges they might tackle. However, if you allow this it'...

Re: Chrome vs. Firefox YouTube throwdown

Although I don't use it for much else, Opera seems to be the most responsive browser in my arsenal when it comes to watching youtube videos or other flash based video. It's about the only thing works well on a woefully under-powered netbook I own.

Re: Tips for drawing in PCs?

Hmmmm ... Well a couple of things I'm wondering about. It kind of sounds like tabletop gaming might not appeal to him. Another thing to consider is if the kid is green and a bunch of experienced (older) gamers are at the table, it can be pretty intimidating when you're young and new to the hobby, es...

Re: Save or Die

I don't think I'd take away the danger and consequences of "save or die" effects, but it's maybe not a bad idea to perform an object lesson on a "redshirt" (usually a henchman or hireling) first so the party gets a sense of what they are up against. If they possess any wisdom, then they should beat ...

Re: Tips for drawing in PCs?

I have one trick that always seemed to work. At character creation make the players write down a few things on an index card that you then keep with you at all times so you can reference it when developing adventure hooks or trying to think of something on the fly. The first is a goal. It need not b...

Re: Aihrde Development

I'm not super familiar with the Aihrde setting, but maybe it would be cool to have this castle be a contested holding that has traded hands multiple times in the last couple of years (first to the orcs, then to a bandit lord, then back to the local Lord/King/Margrave/whatever, now back to the orcs) ...

Re: An interesting list of questionst I ran across on a D&D

(1). Race (Elf, Dwarf, Halfling) as a class? Yes or no? Interesting question. I played a very little bit of redbox D&D when I was about 12, before quickly moving on to AD&D 1st ed. and for the longest time I hated the race-as-class paradigm, but if handled appropriately and there's enough to differ...

Re: Spell Levels

Mostly, I just got around this by springing the nasty reality that "raise dead" involves an unbreakable pact with a demon lord, can only be cast by a sufficiently high-level witch/warlock (who is always highly chaotic (I just use the Law-Chaos axis) and the person is ever after "chaos-touched," So,...

Re: Spell Levels

It may be fun to come up with nasty side effects, however let's cut to the chase. Wish, limited wish, miracle , and to a lesser extent, alter reality can be game breakers even if properly adjudicated by the CK. Better to limit their presence to rare magic items that may have them and creatures that...

Re: Spell Levels

Miracle, Wish, Raise Dead and Resurrection have all been removed from my campaign. I used to do this myself, but it was so much more fun to come up with a nasty list of side-effects that tampering with such power should cause. In short if you really want to get a god or demon's attention, this is t...
