Re: Lego D&D
Naw, their history of anti-competitive business practices is MUCH larger than what happened a year ago. Thoroughly evil. It took 46 States in Fed court to stop them earlier in this century I am not familiar with this. Do you have a news source or article about it? When i do a search of "Hasbro...

Re: Lego D&D
Interesting but I won't give WotC or Hasbro even a penny anymore. Hmmm... while i get the senitiment and certainly won't defend or purchase WotC material, in this case they've done something good, imo. Most of the money goes to Lego anyways, i would think. So punish the bad, reward the good, perhap...

Re: 2e Players' Option
I know (or knew) the books fairly well. They are a mixed batch. Skills & Powers was the one i found the most useful. I particularly liked the options that permitted characters to customize their class abilities. It also had new proficiences and mastery rules. Spells & Magic had a few new cla...

Lego D&D
I've been using Lego Castle figures and sets for D&D adventures since the 90's, but for the first time Lego now actually has a specific licensed D&D set, based on the recent movie. Includes monsters of dragon, displacer beast, beholder, and (my favorite) gelatinous cube. https://www.lego.com...

Re: Rogue Redux
Right. Thus the longer skill list. A rogue-player can choose whichever abilities best fit his/her character concept. Historically thieves, assassins, acrobats, rakes and even bards have been considered rogues. Which is why i have always that said the C&C rogue should not be named such. It shoul...

Re: Illusionists & Starting Spells, Simple Solution
1) All illusionist spells are now wizard spells too, thus you can "specialize if you want", but its all just arcane magic. Thus ends the class illusionist. This sounds related to AD&D 2nd Ed's version, where you could be a generic mage or a specialist in any school of magic. I like th...

Re: Illusionists & Starting Spells, Simple Solution
The illusionist class came about as a conceptual class based around trickery of the mind and phantasms...few of which were able to cause actual damage though they could trick the victim into doing damage to themselves or falling prey to their environment. Exactly, and that's what an illusionist sho...

Re: 5E Type spellcasing Bard fro C&C?
It's interesting (to me anyway) that the BECMI attempt at a bard class, from the Dragon Princess Ark articles, was basically a thief with some charm abilities. Kind of like the C&C bard :) In Dragon #177, it says the bard uses thief as a starting point, minus pick pockets and backstabbing, plus...

Re: 5E Type spellcasing Bard fro C&C?
If you don't want a full spellcasting bard, you might want to check out the AD&D 2nd Ed version of the the bard. It is a rogue-ish, jack-of-all-trades type of bard, and is very easy to convert to C&C.

I use a lot of 2nd Ed material and ideas, including spheres. I sent you an early version of my C&C spheres doc about a year ago.

Re: Distributed "Thief" talents
I guess I would have to treat the thief talents separately than "normal" class abilities. Currently BTB, a rogue would basically get a "+1" to all the talents every level. At L1, each talent would have a +1 as BTB. The distributed concept would then give 8 "points" per...

Re: Iron Flask saving throw
The Iron flask description states that the creature from another plane that gets sucked into the flask gets a Wisdom save but no level of save difficulty is listed. I guess it would be vs. the level of caster needed to create but no spell stands out for its creation. Any erudite ideas? I think it h...

Re: Rethinking C&C
My hit point (I saw what you did there) is to provide a "floor" for each level's hp increase. A fighter can still score 10 hp if they roll great. If they don't they're still looking at 6. Or could do 5. A L10 wizard will still have a max of 40 before Con bonus; a L10 fighter will have 100...

Re: Rethinking C&C
For subsequent levels, start with a player's current total. Each HD-type has a minimum of about 1/2 the max+1: i.e. 6 for a d10, 5 for a d8, 4 for a d6, 3 for a d4 (the d4 guys need the help). Then roll one. You're guaranteed to get at least the minimum. Then add Con bonus. You can't get a sucky &q...

Re: Primes and Class Abilities
As to the post, I remember Steve saying in his home game of C&C, he used (at the time) a single Prime for all abilities of a class, ie Str rolls for all ranger abilities or Cha for all knight abilities. Those against it felt that it drastically changed how Primes were received. Also, I've playe...

Re: Primes and Class Abilities
I don't think the point is that class abilities should be treated as <attribute>-based. Rather, for class abilities, a character has sufficient aptitude to warrant "adding the prime bonus." Given your previous opinions on keeping class abilities "just for that class", I'd think ...

Re: Primes and Class Abilities
There once was a thread where the troll lords themselves answered this question. I searched for it high and low but have yet to find it. The short answer is yes, the intent of the rules are that all class abilities should be treated as prime. That being said, you are free to play how you wish at yo...

Re: Proficiency Bonus
I got that the first time. I'm just thinking of a framework for such abilities across the board. Again, rangers get 2 such abilities that are always-on. Seems a little OP by comparison. Paladins are also immune to disease all the time . Paladins are immune to fear all the time . Etc etc. If you're ...

Re: Backstabbing During Melee
Per the PHB, a Rogue cannot Hide and Move Silently at the same time until 3rd level. At 3rd level and beyond they have to make a move silent and conceal check at -5 and can only move at 1/4 speed. Ah yes, that's an important detail. Thanks for reminding me. So that would mean the thief could (if 3r...

Re: Backstabbing During Melee
New to the rules here but here is the situation at hand; the group spills into a large room filled with goblins and a Gnoll leader. The thief wants to sneak along the columns that run down near each wall and backstab the Gnoll. Can all this be done the same round, i.e., rolling move silently, hide ...

Re: Explanation of C&C Class abilities for new players/GMs
This is where my hang up is, quiet vs silent. There still has to be an opposing check, so what's the difference really? The difference is that silence means no noise. The thief's Move Silently does not allow an opposing check; nothing can hear the thief, period. But a fighter moving quietly might b...

Re: Explanation of C&C Class abilities for new players/GMs
Why do you hate using the word "Rogue"? It's in the PHB.. core rules. By your reasoning, "Thief" shouldn't be allowed :P (Couldn't resist) I don't know what "reasoning" you mean. I do it because "rogue" is a personality. "Thief" is a profession. Eve...

Not to muddy the waters, but how do you treat Elven Boots and Cloak in regard to checks? Damn you Maximus... trying to complicate things. Lol. I was thinking about this, and just spitballing... I suppose the bonus would improve whatever the character could already do. For example, if a fighter wore...

Re: Explanation of C&C Class abilities for new players/GMs
For abilities that Are tied to an attribute, other characters can attempt based on the attribute in question, and can add the attribute bonus and use prime, if applicable. Sure, house rule away. But, that will never by incorporated into C&C Rules. Exactly. Implementing that would be a house rul...

Re: monk alternatives
Western friars would have been a "subclass" of "monk", if monks were the monastic orders. The prototype friars would have been the Franciscans (the "Order of Friars Minor"). Very much non-violent, if St. Francis was the exemplar. Yes, if we created a new class that ref...
