Re: Castle Keeper's Guide

The Castle Keeper Guide is still a core rulebook? I see that in the new Kickstarter it is missing, so perhaps to play C&C we need just the PHB and Monsters & Treasures book? The Castle Keeper Guide is obsolete? The CKG is a book of OPTIONAL rules. Same type of book as the ADD&D Unearthed Arcana was...

I red the 7th printing, the one actually downloadable for free. I should check the old B&W printing I have, that I really like anyway.
I quoted from the free (latest) printing. Downloaded on 15 Oct 2020. I don't recall what printing the B&W was.

The incoming 8th Printing you mean?

Re: The Rogue and the Mace

Well, if every mace could be included, I think it would have been more appropiate the term "maces". The single term seems to imply that only one kind of mace can be used properly by a rogue. In the latest printing they indicate restriction by explicitly naming the weapon(s) allowed. E.g. the weapon...

I'm reading the 3rd printing of the PHB, it says light mace is 3 EV and 6 lbs., large mace is 4 EV and 10 lbs., heavy mace is 4 EV and 12 lbs.
I quoted from the most recent printing.

If it just says "mace" that would be any mace. In the PHB the light mace is 3 lbs. and the large & heavy mace are 4 lbs.

"A half-elf’s uncanny ability to empathize with others is reflected in a +2 bonus to all charisma checks." That says interpersonal interactions to me. The section is headed EMPATHY: which means: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Maybe the writer wrote it using the wrong wo...

"all charisma checks". Not charisma based saving throws. Empathy is an emotional understanding of others, not a shield against magic.

Re: Combat Maneuvers, Conversions, etc

Well, I'm skeptical (that we could have been wiped by low level creatures), but not totally so. Do you have any general advice for making weaker adversaries more threatening to a party? Sure. Have them use TACTICS. YOU as the DM have to think. What if you and 4 other guys who only had pistols were ...

Re: Combat Maneuvers, Conversions, etc

Do you think the CKG 'epic fantasy' SIEGE engine variant for primary/secondary/tertiary challenge bases (10/14/18) would be too much of a change from by the book C&C to start new players with, then? That was my initial thought of what I could use to help gently introduce fellow 3E veterans (and eve...

Re: Combat Maneuvers, Conversions, etc

I got the impression success rates wouldn't go up very much since challenge level goes up with enemy HD, or is that another presumption I should get rid of when running C&C? The thief's ability to climb that smooth wall gets better each level he goes up. Same type of wall, better chance each level ...

Re: Combat Maneuvers, Conversions, etc

When looking at 1st level skill success rates look at 1st level success rates at hitting opponents in in combat... Also with skills, if you start 1st level with 90% success where do you go as you rise in level? Class "balance" is NOT a D&D thing. That fallacy was introduced after Gygax and crew left...

Re: Combat Maneuvers, Conversions, etc

True, but so is dodging, and there are maneuvers for spending a turn focusing on that. Could I not in a similar manner have a character devote their turn to, say, trying to throw an enemy off balance so that his companion could get an easier hit in? Yes, it is the overbearing maneuver. You are phys...

Re: Combat Maneuvers, Conversions, etc

C&C is a SIMPLE rule set.Basic fighting is covered under you attack bonus and Dex bonus. Something like a feint is done CONSTANTLY in a fight and isn't separate from the fight. E.g. blocking with a shield isn't a separate roll. It is part of the AC bonus of the shield. If you want to do something un...

Not at all. The ring protects against magical powered entanglement/holds not non-magical and allows liquid to be treated as air..

Another grappling question, if "Freedom of movement" lets you not get Held, webbed, or entangled or move through quicksand with ease, I would also assume you could not be grappled or help no matter how big and strong or skilled the creature holding you be it a giant, a python, or a dragon paw ... If you plot height of a bi-ped vs move there is a nice linear relationship... but making anyone over 3' tall move at 20' is too slow, its more like 25'... just a point on the topic... check out Domesday 7 or 8.. In practical, how often have any of you played in a game or ran a game that would have worked out like that? Many times in siege, counter siege situations.
