Quicklings and invisibility

One of my player's has a character with family that has a long-standing feud with a powerful fae entity. I'm wanting to have that entity dispatch a quickling to kill the offending character. I'm not sure there is a quickling in the M&T of CM books but I have the entry from the 2nd Edition Monstr...

Re: Missile Weapons and ROF

Now I found it. As Aergraith said, there's a section on Rate of Fire in the Castle Keeper's Guide (pg. 310). Heavy crossbow is every other round. There are rules for increasing rate of fire for regular bows, up to 4 arrows/round, but there are associated penalties; -2 for 2 arrows/round, -4 for 3 a...

Re: Missile Weapons and ROF

The price and EV differences are there but fairly inconsequential. After a level or two characters don't have a hard time buying standard weapons. The typical fighter-type isn't going to be so constrained by EV that it becomes an issue. The role-playing concerns, I totally agree with. I guess my (ve...

Re: Missile Weapons and ROF

Yeah, I get that the rules can be tweaked. However, every change I make in the rules is one I have to keep up with and explain to players at the table. I try to keep that to a minimum, if I can. I'll probably leave this alone for a while and see how it works out. No since making new rules to fix thi...

Re: Missile Weapons and ROF

If that is the case, why would anyone take anything other than the heavy crossbow? If the ROF is the same across all weapons then the heavy crossbow is the clearly superior choice. Shouldn't there be a tradeoff?

Missile Weapons and ROF

I can't find anything on the rate of fire for missile weapons in the Player's Handbook. Do bows and crossbows have the same rate of fire; 1 per round? If I recall from my AD&D days, the bows could fire twice a round if you didn't move. Light crossbows fired once a round. Heavy crossbows fired on...

Re: Playing at the Table

I'm at a 3. For quite a lot of the combats I go completely Theatre of the Mind. If I want to make the battle seem more significant or there's some cool tactical stuff I'd like to throw in for fun, then I tend to pull or maps or terrain. There is a fairly high correlation between the battle's signifi...

Re: Favorite magic items

The three that immediately came to mind. Requiem - A +4 Defender that caused a funeral dirge to play when used. If used in full defensive mode, it block all normal missiles fired at the wielder, as if a Protection from Normal Missiles had been cast. My elven bladesinger had this long sword. It was a...

Re: Saves vs Things

Thanks for the answers. I had seen the quote from the CKG about rods. It didn't say anything about other types of magic items though. I'm likely either going to go with the level of the wielder or 12th level. Both are simple rulings. Going with the level of who made the item or charged the item mean...

Saves vs Things

I get how Saves work in general. Spells are simple enough. The Challenge Level is the Caster's level. What is the Challenge Level for items? Say I have a Ring of Charm Person. What is the Challenge Level for saving against that wand? Is it based on the spell level or is there a standard Challenge Ra...

Re: Wizards, Fighters, and Balance

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the responses. I'll mark this down as a criticism of someone who hasn't actually played the game then and not worry about it much.

Wizards, Fighters, and Balance

I stumbled into Castles and Crusades a few months ago and I've really enjoyed reading it. I have since purchased all the core books. I say that so that you know my question below is not a criticism of the system. It is a genuine question to those who may have much more experience in actually playing...
