Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?

Finally finished "City of Brass" so now I'm about to dive into "Starship Warden." Those two books alone run more than 1000 pages in length.

Re: Gods & Legends

Personally I found the Mythos books too overblown and badly written, even though the research seemed okay. But I would like a handy one volume book that brings all the gods and info on their worshipers, holy symbols, etc., together so I'll likely grab this. My homebrew setting combines most of the M...

Re: Starship Warden

I saw a review where they said the map pack was nothing special, though I suppose if you wanted to print off single maps for play, it could be handy. I ended up buying the core book and the Saving Wren adventure and the digital chronology, character sheet, etc., because I remembered that I had a cou...

Gods & Legends

Anyone order Gods & Legends yet? Would love to see a review when someone gets it. I'm still waiting patiently for the hard copy of the Adventurer's Spellbook to drop and I may grab this then when I pick up the spellbook.

Re: Starship Warden

Yeah, I'm intrigued about Starship Warden too, in particular the Star Siege system and whether one could just run a straight up C&C game in it, a la Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. I saw a blog post where Jim Ward says that's precisely what he did with Gygax back in the day and Troll Lord has a...

Yes, MTA is Monsters & Treasures of Aihrde. There are lots of normal animal writeups in there.

Re: Sunday night World of Greyhawk™ C&C game

Hey Gang--

I have to go out of town today and I'm not sure if I'll back back tonight for the game. If I'm not back, just presume that Galmir is back scrounging spell components or run him as an NPC.

Thanks!

As they put it in Hackmaster 4e: "As your character gains levels he gets tougher and can take more physical abuse. Do you think that cop in Die Hard could have taken all that damage as a rookie cop? No way. He'd have probably passed out from the broken glass in his foot alone. But he was a high...

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?

Frog God was selling the hardcover City of Brass campaign module for 40% off so I snagged it for Swords & Wizardry. And I must say, it's pretty damn good so far. I bought just intending to use the setting for something I was thinking about doing, but it's so cool I may well try to run the campai...

Re: Sunday night World of Greyhawk™ C&C game

Actually we've had multiple parties over the years with no standard magic-user but an illusionist and it worked out fine. Spells like paralysis and color spray can be super effective. Our most interesting party ever consisted of a paladin, barbarian, half-elf druid, fighter, and gnome illusionist/th...

Re: Sunday night World of Greyhawk™ C&C game

Cool; I was thinking of playing a spellcaster so it looks like that will fit. Now I just have to decide between the wizard or the illusionist. Or maybe a multi-classed demi-human. And it's spells only from PHB, right? None from the AB or Elemental Spells book? Will get my PC posted here in the next ...

Hey gang-- Just joined up, but I have zero experience with Roll20. I logged into the game page and saw the chat from the last game, but where can I see all the PCs and character sheets? I have a couple ideas for a character class/race but I want to roll up someone who complements the existing party....

I like the extra damage they give you, but keeping track of the parrying & AC bonuses, etc. could be a bit of a chore. But we did use those at higher levels in our BECMI games.

Re: About new players, the CKG wastage rules and other considerations - long post

I just deduct an upkeep cost roughly equivalent to one of the custom backpacks after each adventure if they want the maintain the same equipment. New stuff costs the list price of course. Then I'll usually deduct for rents, guild fees, tithes, etc.

Those are cool and can speed up combat in that they up the damage factor, though I suppose one can do that with criticals as well. I've thought about adding action dice from DCC, as well as their expanded crit range for fighters & barbarians, though not the deed die. I already do these things fo...

And from experience, if you have the means/patience to list on Ebay or somewhere like that, you'll get more than Noble Knight will give you. They're fine because it's pretty hassle free but I've traded stuff to them and then seen them list my stuff for 4-5 times the price they gave me. So if you're ...

Re: Rules that not in C&C. Could they be part of it?

I don't really buy that argument, though it does get significantly harder to run games at higher levels owing to the multitude of monster & character abilities at those levels. The thing with C&C is that if the players are fighting equally powerful foes they won't get better at surviving via...

Nice. Indeed, some of those Rappan Athuk encounters are practically designed to be TPK's. Our Swords & Wizardry party is currently in the Maze there, having survived a tough fight in one of the lesser temples to Orcus, where they lost (but raised) one PC and had another get level drained by a sp...

Re: Is there a date for the PHB 8th print?

Yeah, so it's basically a slightly updated version of the Character Classes book they put out a couple years ago. I grabbed that but it ended up being less useful than I expected because it doesn't have equipment or spells. So you still need the other books. I'm hoping the Adventurers Spellbook will...

Yeah, I will say that unlike most iterations of D&D, the scaling of the Siege Engine keeps things pretty hardcore at the higher levels, which I like. And to be completely honest, I haven't run a C&C game above 8th level yet so my opinions may change when (if?) our PCs get to those higher lev...

For me, levels 10-14 are the "sweet spot." Guess it's my fond memories of the GDQ series etc. But I like bringing on those demons, devils, giants etc., and slugging it out with high level PCs.

Actually, I love it in this case. This is an adventure for levels 12 & up, in an ancient Elven city, not some goblin lair. One of the hooks I wrote up indicated there were artifacts to be found therein. I already know where I'm putting the other one, which is an ancestral dwarven battle axe. Got...
