That's how it worked in AD&D & B/X so I presume they just carried it over.

Re: Barsoom

I got an omnibus version of the first 5 novels a couple years ago for Christmas. Found them okay, but pretty repetitive. They kind of read like a 30s version of the Fast & Furious movies set on Mars. Everything is set up for the next over the top chase scene or daring escape. At least they have ...

Looking for Abyssal City Maps

Hey Everyone, I'm looking for a couple city maps that I could use for Abyssal cities. They can come from games other than C&C; I just want cool maps. One city will be built on a cliff (like those Indian dwellings, but higher tech). Another will be a vast interplanar marketplace. The third will b...

Re: Looking for ideas

A lot of the expert modules for D&D would work.

X3--Curse of Xanathon
X8--Drums on Fire Mountain
X12--Skarda's Mirror

all come to mind.

Re: Pendragon type passion v Alignment

Personally, I'm old fashioned. I prefer good versus evil or even law versus chaos. These other systems can have interesting aspects for roleplaying, but for me it's just too clunky and one more thing to track. Maybe if you had a group that was really into it, it could work well. Certainly, you could...

Re: Criticals & Fumbles

Thought I'd necro this thread from 4 years ago because I've been messing around with integrating the old MERP crit, fumble, and spell failure tables into my C&C game and I tested them out with a friend this week. Here are my working house rules:  Spells fail due to SR or foe rolling natural 20 ...

Re: Castles & Crusades Reforged?

I don't really need another CKG, PHB, or M&T so I'm skipping this one. But I've backed a bunch of other stuff recently and I'll certainly support Zagyg and other new material as it's released.

Re: Your dream campaign

I'd run Aufstrag (A13 - A17), but I'd scale back the challenge levels and so would have the player levels at 3rd or 4th! These dungeon levels are some of the best I've ever seen! I'd someday like to run the whole A series, starting from A0 and finishing with Aufstrag, but Steve has to finish the da...

Re: Your dream campaign

Damn! That's a tough one because I have different ideas for different games. I'll get the ball rolling by plugging my own Dark Heaven campaign, that I'm currently converting from AD&D to C&C. Right now I'm about 1800 pages into the latest rewrite/conversion. It's a massive apocalyptic high-l...

Re: New but also returning (AKA Converting early D&D modules to C&C)

In my groups back in the 80s we divided which modules we bought and rotated DMing. It was a great system but once we all went our separate ways in college it was tougher to do. Since then, I've mostly DMed, except for a group I gamed with 2008-12, where we rotated again, and now here with the Monday...

Re: Trying to understand Demi-humans getting two primes from a designers perspective

It's a balancing mechanic to substitute for the evil of demihuman level limits. C&C has level limits for demi human PCs? Not really, but it does have preferred classes that are listed in the race descriptions. The way we play it, those are the only classes the demi-humans can play, but only dem...

Latest printing of CKG?

Hey--

What's the latest printing of the CKG? I think mine is the 3rd printing, but they're running a sale with the 4th printing for $10, so I might grab it if it's the newest version.

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?

Just got The Dark Tower set from Goodman Games. It includes a hardcover reprint of the original (with AD&D stats), plus the full module and several expansions statted for DCC. Lots of great extras too, including a really nice color map, a t-shirt, and metal coins representing the key factions/cu...

Re: outsiders

Yeah, good luck with that:)

I think various terms and verbiage from virtually every edition of D&D creep into C&C products and their lax approach to copy editing ensures that will continue to be the case. Consider it part of the charm of C&C at this point....

Can't see anything I'd use here. But I've been blowing lots of money with TLG lately and I'm probably going to grab The Undying War hardcover at some point so I'm not feeling remorse at passing on this one.

Hmmm, tough one. I'll split them by categories/systems: AD&D GDQ Series (Q1 is so-so, but the first time running these was so amazing) T1-4 (We were playing this when the Challenger crashed) S3--Lost Caverns of Tsjocanth (Love how the outdoor stuff works & many cool monsters) B/X X4-5--Deser...

Re: Shadows of the Halfling Hall starting level

Way back in the day I ran it for a group of newly created level 1 PCs and it was fine. I don't think there were any deaths. Now the follow-up adventure was a different story. But if you have a level 2 PC or two, it shouldn't be too tough.

Re: New Codices

Yeah, not so much. There's stuff on weapons used in history with damages and few pages with some martial arts techniques. Some can be combined with qi powers and be pretty deadly as you can get more attacks. This is much more interesting if you're not using the nerfed C&C monk damage tables. But...

Re: New Codices

For crafting a game, it's like pretty much all the Codices. A bit dense and hard to follow at times, but you can do some really cool stuff with it. And it's easy enough to add what you like and ignore the other stuff. The adventure, by the way, which was an add-on, is not bad. Pretty straightforward...

Re: New Codices

Got my Codex Sinarum on Thursday. It's okay, not great. As a specialist in Chinese history and culture (though not religion), I don't want to be too critical, but I'll offer initial impressions. The history is generally accurate with a few errors. There are plenty of deities, though as others have m...

Making my second pass through the massive and quite excellent "Gods of the Forbidden North" from Pulp Hummock Press. A fun mix of 80s fantasy/pop culture, real world history, Hyperborea, and Alaskan folklore. And this 477 page tome is just volume 1 of 3. Written for OSE, so could easily be...
