Re: Chase Rules

There is actually a good rule set up for chases in I think the 2nd edition AD&D DM's guide. It used STR checks to run faster and CON checks to see about maintaining that speed. I'll try to find it and post it.

Re: more car questions with the kar jenious!

Get your two front tires balanced. 65+ with a slight wobble generally indicates that they are out of balance. Also when on a balancer the tech should be able to tell you if a rim is bent or not, or whether a tire is out of round (doubt it since they are newer) which no amount of balancing will truly...

Re: Saving throws for spells

I'd say I like both ways. I'd conditionally figure it off a per-basis scenario. Say it's just some random group of baddies wandering some random dungeon/castles/ruins/what-have-you... Then spell level works. Give my PC's a little bit of a cutting edge perhaps, as there's only a small prize at the en...

Re: Favorite Critical Hit Systems?

I like the method koralas wrote down, I also have a propensity to just level monsters (PCs can do it, why not monsters?) to match player's levels a little, so that weaker monsters maintain some relevance at higher levels. This still only works to some degree, as it would be hard to match a level 9 p...

Re: Attribute Rolling

I prefer straight 3d6. Good random spread of attributes, and a high value is cherished, this also allows low values to be looked past a little, and I factor these weaknesses into encounters. I do though, prefer to allow each PC to improve any one attribute every 3 levels by 1 point or their lowest a...

Mundane Employment in the Fantasy World

So one of the things I started to build was a list of mundane "jobs" (basically mini-adventures) for players to do while they are in town and want some work. These are meant to help build reputation as well as letting them earn some spare change or items. Most are planned to take a single game sessi...

Re: Adding Classes

My thought is that the number of classes is already fairly broad-spanning. If a player wants to play a particular style not "spanned" by the current list of classes, I allow adjustments instead to what is already available to give them that "feel" they want.

The new Lone Wolf RPG. Based on the series of gamebooks for the 1980s, this new lone wolf RPG keeps the game very close to the system used in the books, but advances it enough to make it a full-fledged RPG. I'm really liking what I see so far. ~O Woo I'm on book 18 of the Lone Wolf series- "Dawn of...

Re: frequency of death

I think Treebore's quote in his signature by Gygax sums it up best how players should (in general) die: "The worthy GM never purposely kills players' PCs. He presents opportunities for the rash and unthinking players to do that all on their own." - E. Gary Gygax (1938-2008) I think deaths should hap...

Re: Encumbrance Value for Worn Items

I prefer leniency and "eyeballing" to an extent, but if ever there is a need, I tend to just follow a weight scheme. Weight (in lbs.) 0 lbs. to STR x 10 lbs.: No Encumbrance, Full Movement STR x 10 lbs. to STR x 20 lbs.: Encumbered, Half Movement STR x 20 lbs. to STR x 30 lbs.: Very Encumbered, 1/10...

I'm under the influence that shields were vastly important to self defense. For that reason, I give them a boost. Basic AC bonus for sure, although I like the added abilities people talk about it. One just needs to think about just how important a shield was, particularly prior to plate armor. It re...

Re: On the Density of Cities

During medieval time Chang'an had a population of ~1,000,000 for a density of abut 34,000/square mile. Rome was similar during late Ancient period. This actually jives with the website Treebore posted. Under the miscellany section it states the average within the walled confines of a medieval city ...

On the Density of Cities

I was thinking about the area a massive city would take that I am working into my campaign world and it got me thinking about the common argument and questions of city size and density for medieval or fantasy cities in general. I'm no expert, but with a little reading and some math, I've begun to th...

Back to the beholder, wow... Wouldn't have thought it was intellectual property. Speaking of the Prysmal Eye, there's an error on pg. 76 under the Lammasu entry that references the prysmal eye under the telepathy reference.

Re: Low level "magic items" with character but little power

I meant to make a note of this earlier on but for those needing some good magical items that are useful and unordinary, a good 4-book set to have is the 2nd edition Encyclopedia Magica series. The series has thousands of magical items from the mundane to the extraordinary. Even better the items tend...

I agree on this method. It is actually similar to how 2nd ed AD&D ruled it, though it didn't have a simple 5x, 10x, 15x setup. You could look in that PHB for ideas.

Re: Wands/Staves/Potions/Scrolls

I'd assume only spellcasters would be able to use wands. For spell-level, that would be your choice depending on the scenario at hand. Either the creator imbued it with a set amount of strength (i.e. a particular level) regardless of the user's level or you could easily say the power at which a user...
