Re: Dark fantasy genre

Great ideas. Thanks for the suggestions. By dark I was thinking along the lines of witcher. Lots of ghouls, ghosts and undead. I like the lovecraftian feel amd Poe is a great reference. Given that, I stand by my WFRP advice. It's heavily influenced by lovecraft. Also, any of the Cthulu games are bo...

Re: Sometimes the answer is right in front of you

Nothing wrong with setting a limit. I suggest, for balance, that you set an experience limit, rather than a level limit (since spellcasting is a major concern, find the exp needed for level 12 wizard and cap it there). That way, classes with lower experience, due to lower power, don't get left out i...

Re: Dark fantasy genre

It depends on your definition of dark fantasy. Look into Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (1st and/or 2nd edition). That should give you some ideas. It's dark, but you could call it fantasy with horror or gritty. It also has some elements of epic fantasy (though not usually at the player's level) and some...

Re: First C&C Session a Success! And Coin Weight...

Part of the problem is the use of gold as the standard coin. This is irrelevant. It is what can be purchased. NOT, what the "standard coin is. (see following) If the basic monetary unit was copper, or silver and gold coins had real value, then carrying away 10 lbs of gold coins would be a fortune! ...

I find it's best to gloss over coin weight with such unrealistic coin economies.

Re: I think I have hit upon a "Spell Point" system I can lik

My worry about your method Treebore is that it treats levels as directly proportional to one another- IE, that a 2nd level spell is twice as powerful as a 1st level spell, and half as powerful as a 4th. I don't know that spells typically scale that way, and thus point totals may cause an unintended...

Re: Gandalf Revisited:

Why a Bard? The bard is actually a perfect fit for Gandalf in many ways. Gandalf's primary strength was in motivating others. Kindling their spirits and spreading lore. Narya's powers were primarily those of kindling the hearts' of others. Still, this is one instance where you'd have a much easier ...

How do you bring his racial modifiers into it? He was not a human, by any stretch. Plus a write up of his "Sacred Flame" is needed. When you say "sacred flame," are you referring to the flame of arnor? The secret fire? I always thought he was referring to Narya, the ring of fire, though not everyon...

2e is definitely the best. I like how easy it is to convert the 1e adventures, because some of those were just amazing.

If you want to do all that work, it could be cool, but if you LIKE the WFRP system, you should play WFRP. BEST. SETTING. EVER!

Also some great old school adventures floating around in PDF.

I'm not saying don't roll dice, I am saying let the players decide how they want to generate their attributes. To give the players true, total, control over creating their character. You could go with the dinosaur extinction theory - giant asteroid strikes planet, huge explosion, dust and ash block out sun, ice age wipes out masses of people and flora and fauna. That's pretty extreme for me! Sure, it's extreme, but they're all legal attributes you could get from rolling, though not probable. We know it probably won't break the game (any more than d20) because in d20 games leveling grants stat boosts, and they all end up around there eventually. The racial ...
