Re: Defender AC for grappling

Offensive focus, does that work with ranged attacks or was that meant mainly for melee combat? Thoughts?

Re: Defender AC for grappling

My PC STR is not a prime... so my grapple AC starts at a 12 +2 STR and +4 DEX = 18 AC. lower than my normal AC by just a few. If it were based on my DEX, which is prime, it would be 24 better than my normal AC. The hill giant I think is 9 HD so at least a +9 to his roll (this guy might have been hig...

Re: Call Lightning - underpowered spell ?

the timing and location are everything. first you have to be outside, second you need a tad bit of bad weather, but that could be every few days in real life. in real life, war takes seasons... so you have time on your side. DnD group tend to rush in and do everything in a hurry.. we must fight this...

Re: Call Lightning - underpowered spell ?

Assuming a druid and a mage of the same level (let us assume level 10)... in an evening the druid can cast 10 10d10 bolts in 20 diameter vertical cylinders. A 10th level druid could cast this spell 3 times in a row taking 33 minutes of casting time and 100 min per spell for a total of 300 d10 damage...

Re: Defender AC for grappling

I am not sure about answering that as I rarely use, but I will add a question to yours... my PC is very dexterous (21 total) normal size and against a hill giant ... it went in for the grapple... its STR against my STR... I did not want to be grabbed.... my first reaction is "I am not in a STR conte...

Re: Quench spell & magic candles ?

Sorry, all I can think of is those party candles... you blow them out just fine, but a second or so later they relight on their own... give the candle holder a roll to let it pop back to light without doing anything?

Re: The 'filler' Illusionist Spells...why are they there

One way to have more spells is to enlarge your spells in memory, or you could cast from, but keep the spells per day limits. Our group does that as a house rule, 1.5 x the spells per day in memory, spells per day cast and those cast do not wipe memory... "spell slots" and all clerics can convert any...

Re: Is there some advantage attacking in your underwear?

Pretty much on this topic... heavy armors negate or take away AC bonus from DEX.. do I recall correctly that used to be a rule, your fighter in plate with and 18 dex does not get his dex bonus? Helps keep armor class creep down, helps remove temptation to stick to only the physical, and it brings th...

Re: The 'filler' Illusionist Spells...why are they there

OK, so yes, healing for the Illusionist was a huge departure... it make sense, I can almost buy in, but I feel like some one wanting believe that genocide is a reasonable response to a cultural problem.. the illusionist was a specialist at best, not a equivalent to the mage, and it surely is not a c...

Re: Is there some advantage attacking in your underwear?

A bare wire is a great conductor... when you grab it you get shocked... I would NOT want to test plate mail protecting you as you're in contact with it... In the old days didn't you NOT get your DEX to AC in heavy armors? I'm very tempted to add that back in... I have an elf in plate mail and high D...

Re: Question on Barkskin

Barkskin... too powerful.... touch vs self... I see a druid doing it only to self... and little need to do it to the fighter or cleric since it does not stack with armor (I think)... so you barkskin up the mage or a thief.. big deal... let it be either... or self at start and with a WIS check they c...

Re: The Murky Land of Attributes and Levels

I see logic and game issues to anything we do, nothing is perfect... anyone can try to move quietly, but we should not rob from the thief moving utterly silently.. just like the fighter cannot fly by flapping his arms no matter what roll he makes... takes magic to fly... so I like letting the race l...

Re: Missing 1st Ed Cleric Spells

Your idea is excellent, not because I already do just that, but because Treebore and others have that as a house rule and I got to thinking about it... seems like I should give my cleric and my mages something they can always do, rather slowly. Big changes or house rules we use are: 1) 1.5x spells i...

I agree, spell or section paralysis limits players ability to act at times, but memorized spells ahead of time limits them further... can still be many at higher levels. As is we have a house rule of 1.5x your uses per day in memory, spell use does not eliminate that spell, just a use, and we let an...

Sneak Attack is so weak... might as well let the poor class do it all it can that's reasonable... back attack aka backstab is rare too.
