If you people are in to minis that are less "cartoony" and more grounded, then I can't say enough good things about Tre Manor's stuff at red-box-games.com
His Norse stuff and Helsvakt figures are especially appropriate to this thread.

Re: Hey buddy, can you spare an Apocalypse?
How about this: The sun went out for several years ... maybe it was magical, maybe it was natural, but whatever you come up with it devestated food production, started massive fights over dwindling resources and/or allowed the creatures of the cthonian underworld to pour out of their holes and furth...

Re: GM Sale ongoing
I don't know if it makes me weird, but I have a very hard time reading a rulebook straight through when it's in pdf format, but I love having them when they are bookmarked and searchable with CTRL-F after I've been able to interalize the dead-tree version.

So far as I can tell, RQ6 is now under license to The Design Mechanism. I don't see any mention of Mongoose on the pdf I have.

Re: RuneQuest 6 Bundle of Holding
I jumped on the bundle of holding mostly because I've never done any d100 gaming but I've long been curious about Runequest. So after spending some time poring over the book, I can say that it seems like a very well written, edited and organized tome, but I'm not sure if I grok some of its more fidd...

Re: Haunted Highlands CK Guide is a monster!
I've been trying to get into it, but I'll be damned if I can read PDFs for very long. Even with a 27" widescreen monitor, it's just not comfortable for extended reading.
Beyond that, I like what I see so far ... minus a few typos that are jumping out at me occasionally.

Re: Advice from you Cthulhu fans
My philosophy on detect evil has always been that it detects active evil intent and/or beings of an infernal nature, rather than sussing out alignment (which is something a creature/man in my world is always ignorant of in themselves, and is used mostly as a tool to enforce role-play).

Re: Starting level for a new campaign
I'm a big fan of encouraging players to make full use of torchbearers, porters, men-at-arms, guard dogs and/or henchmen at low-level. Basically fantasy equivalents to the "red shirts" of Star Trek fame. Henchmen also have the benefit of being good candidates for promotion to player charac...

Re: PH 6 Layout and Foramt
My biggest complaint about the book is ease of reading. There does need to be a much better contrast of the print and the background color. As it is I would have been much more excited to hear we would be going back to B&W, so I hope you can do something about it. I hope you mean your actually ...

Re: Swords & Wizardry Complete (Earl Otus Cover) Free
So this is worth getting? Does anyone play S&W? why S&W over C&C? I see the appeal of both. I think C&C is an easier sell for people who got into gaming during D&D 3.x and like more moving parts, or those who really liked AD&D over B/X or Basic D&D (although the distinct...

Re: Atk vs ac
If you're worried about the math then just subtract points of AC from the monsters or consider boosting the base attack numbers for your characters to simulate whatever benefit you would expect them to have if magic items were distributed as "normal" at a given level - say +1 at level 4 or...

As an on-again-off-again Linux user I can vouch for the performance and ease of use of Manjaro Linux (a rolling release model based on Arch Linux) and Elementary OS looks very slick and polished. I'm really excited to see what Valve comes up with for SteamOS in the next 6 months or so.

This feels like hand-waving territory for me. The only time I would ever worry about rules for hypothermia would be someone falling through ice into water, getting stuck outside in a blizzard or otherwise being put at considerable risk for exposure. If you are going to make checks or saves, don't ma...

I heartily recommend Mike Shea's "The Lazy Dungeon Master" for some really nice and concise game running and world building tips. There's a pdf version on RPGnow.com and you can get a print on demand version through lulu.com In short: start small (a barony, a valley, whatever) and worry mo...

Re: for those who play with critical hits
A natural 20 deals maximum damage in my game - nothing more and nothing less. The reason for this is that I've always been a "3d6 arrange as you like" kind of GM so player stat bonuses have tended to be rather low in most of my games, which also means that hit points don't usually end up a...

Re: Technology in your game.
My home brew world is an alternate Earth with an indeterminate timeline (it could be 10,000 BC or 100,000 AD for all the players know). It mostly works out to an Iron Age tech level approximating Northern Europe in 800-1000 AD in terms of arms and armor, etc. but "artefacts" occasionally p...

Re: DCC RPG
I picked up DCC a month or so ago after thumbing through a copy on the shelf at a local gaming store. I'll be honest I mostly picked it up for the artwork (I love me some Jim Roslof and Russ Nicholson) but after diving into it I have to say the game seems pretty impressive (at least on paper). I'm n...

Also it's helpful to let players know ahead of time that retreat is an option. I think there can be a tendency with newer gamers to see encounters simply as 'mobs' meant to be lined up and killed like it's a video game.

Re: Knight's Inspire Ability and ideas for avoiding a TPK...
1. The text of the rule for "inspire" is loose enough that I think you could rule it however you like; realistically it doesn't take a ten minute speech to "inspire" others to greater heroics, it could just be a simple battlecry as he charges into the fray or his force of persona...

Re: Steam "Plrrrrp!"
One thing to bear in mind is that Steam's support for games is going to be pretty generic in most cases unless the game was developed in-house by Valve. My humble suggestion would be to check out the website for Godus and see if they have a FAQ, or a forum where other people are reporting a similar ...

Re: Tainted Lands in the house tonight!
Yeah, I had that problem too. I solved it by saying, "Do you want me to run games?" The answer was yes, so I said, "Then its going to be C&C, and we are all going to have fun." Which we have, for years now. I don't have that kind of leverage. I'm the wayward son come home re...
