What I've Done On My C&C Vacation

Howdy, folks! Been awhile. As mentioned elsewhere I haven't run or played C&C except at cons for about three years. Not feeling like I had much to offer I took a vacation from this forum as well. I'm back, poking around while contemplating running a megadungeon crawl using C&C in the near fu...

Re: Where'd they all go?

*a friendly wave* Curious coincidence that this thread is up on my first visit back to these forums in many months. Speaking purely for myself, for the last few years I have been playing games other than C&C. I actually took a break from this style of fantasy gaming, except for convention play, ...

Re: Gary Con VII dates announced

Booked my room on Tuesday. And I'm promising myself to only run two or three games (plus the traditional Divine Right game on Friday) next year so I can actually play some games.

Re: Opinions on Operating Systems

CKDad, What's your opinion of the Ghostery add-in for Firefox? Any good? Thanks. Had a chance to look into this today. It's interesting, and it may help somewhat limiting what people track about you - but I'm becoming less convinced of the viability of tools like these really making a difference as...

Re: Opinions on Operating Systems

On a more positive note, some proactive steps you can take: - Use a browser plug-in like NoScript. - And an ad-blocking plug-in. - Don't use Java unless you absolutely have to. - AV and anti-malware software that has a reputation-based system (like Malware Bytes) can sometimes ID & block some tr...

Re: Opinions on Operating Systems

Anti-virus won't help you with this.  There are TONS of vulnerabilities in the NT based OS that can never be patched. That is what Security s/w is for. It takes malicious code to take advantage of OS holes. That CODE can be detected, blocked and/or eliminated. PLEASE take time to get ed...

Re: Opinions on Operating Systems

A word of advice about staying on XP: don't. Now that support for it has been discontinued, vulnerabilities will no longer be patched. The attacker community is actively going after these vulnerable machines now. They're not just going after your personal data (and logins that they'll capture via ke...

Re: FLGS RPG Section Shrinking

For those of you with local game stores that are struggling, ask if they participate in GAMA. If so, they need to track down the presentations and talks by the manager of my FLGS, Paul Butler. Paul looks like he stepped out of the pages of 1st edition Shadowrun, but he has decades worth of retail kn...

Gary Con V (2013) C&C Society Tournament Adventure

(Cross-posted from the C&C Society G+ group) I'd meant to share this some time ago, but SWEET BABY MORDIUS HOW DID IT GET TO BE MARCH 2014 ALREADY? Ahem. Anyway, here's a link to the Gary Con V Castles & Crusades Society Tournament, penned by yours truly with able assistance from Gerry "...

Re: Gary Con dates finalized for 2014

While I'm looking forward to GaryCon and seeing so many friends again, I definitely went a bit overboard on running games - two sessions of Shadowrun, one of Mongoose Traveller, my now-traditional Divine Right game on Friday, and a session of Gerry's C&C tourney offering. I managed to get in one...

Re: What boardgame(s) are you playing?

In the past couple of weeks I've managed both some OGRE (just the classic scenario while teaching my son) and a nice playing of Eclipse, the big discovery/empire builder board game. I've got to say that the elegance of design in Eclipse, where the components and mechanics work fairly seamlessly toge...

Re: Class Abilities and the Prime Attribute

I think I'm with Treebore's line of thinking: if it's a class skill, it gets treated as if the attribute was a prime, whether that character has it as prime or not. While it's not functionally very different from what you were initially proposing, from a "Will this make sense to a new player or...

Re: What boardgame(s) are you playing?

I think that if it's left in the box, it will be fine. We did pull that tray out to look at it and one of the corners had split, so you might want to check that and apply a bit of duct tape. Not certain any further reinforcement will be needed.

Punched, assembled and sorted the counters from one of my two sets of OGRE, Designer's Edition last night. Took my son & I 2.5 hours. We'll get a game in at some point in the next couple of days, and will be taking it over my FLGS charity Game-a-thon on Friday.

Right now it's just registration for the con itself. They're opening up event submissions this weekend, with event registration to follow later (I think Dale said January, but I'm not 100% sure).

Re: Shadowrun 5th Edition

Omote, I think you'll find 5th is somewhat streamlined compared to 4th. For one thing, they've pretty much synched everything into the Skill + Attribute mechanic - no more craziness about the Matrix rules being sometimes that, sometimes Skill + Program, sometimes Commlink Attribute + Program, etc. C...

Shadowrun 5th Edition

I'm finally up and running on the new edition (nothing like running five sessions over a three-day convention to get one up to speed) and it's pretty much the best version of the game since 2nd edition. They've kept the new pieces from 4th that made sense - the change to the resolution mechanics, th...

Re: Kickstarters and Preorders, The Bane of Present-Day Game

I've backed many game-related kickstarters, and almost all have seen some sort of delays. Some of these have been victims of their own success (see OGRE, which became such a massive game SJG & partners are having to develop entirely new packaging). Others have run into problems with members of t...

Re: Most powerful/favourite magic weapon your character had

My long-ago 1st edition paladin Dirtral Galermaine came into possession of a +2 longsword that did double damage versus chaotics. This turned out to be an incredibly effective weapon, which he used to disembowel legions of bad guys. It also became a story hook as the GM would occasionally would have...

I actually have to advise against doing what serleran and Arduin recommend. Deliberately bypassing security controls - however nonsensical - can get you fired in many places.
