RIP - Andrew Hackard

Mostly known for Munchkin by Steve Jackson Games, that is not all he did. For some, many even, he may have been known for his work with the Kargatane, a Ravenloft community back in the early d20 days, amongst others.

Baggage often has your name on it, so you can claim it later.

Oh, no. Wait, that's luggage. And in some places of other worlds, it follows you.

My wife backed the TLG KS "Starship Warden" project and now I have those books so I've been looking at them. Very thick main book.

I actually ran with an Earthdawn vibe for the last C&C game I played. Magic was the hardest "conversion" to be true to setting.

Re: Impossibile Skill Check?

If the result is impossible, a SIEGE check is not even used per the rules. You only use it when there is a chance of success and it is "dramatic/cinematic." Likewise, if the chance is guaranteed, no roll is needed. This does lead some to suggest natural 1 and 20 as failure or success, resp...

Re: Genius of the Siege Engine

You could just use the "average XP per monster" document(s) and adjust if above, or below. That removes most of the annoying calculation as it leaves only the" +X per HP."

This is why all C&C CKs should read the original DM advice from Gygax. NEVER randomly introduce Artifacts as treasure.
Yes, sure, but don't look at the random magic tables where one can get one by dice result.

Re: Jazzing Up Random Encounters

Sounds like a great way or chance to bring a Tarot deck into the game... Sure, and for that, I was actually writing a whole thing up The Tarot Plot which was to allow one to roll dice rather than use the physical cards. Rather fun at the time to determine how to give 78 cards an equal 1:1 using per...

I should also note that some spell effects create "bubbles" or such outside the character, such as the shield spell or wall of force . These should likely work as additional protection, provided they do not yield universal adjustments (for example, hitting from the opposite side means no g...

Re: Jazzing Up Random Encounters

Sometimes, when I remember, I use a deck of playing cards, complete with the Jokers. This is just a very basic idea. I try to not get too detailed in it as that is more limiting, I feel. Draw three cards after shuffling, all face down. Flip one face up. That is the one used. The value determines the...

I see no reason to not play both simultaneously, even in the same game. Unless you like to keep rules entirely apart. I've no personal issue having a dwarf and then a dwarf fighter/thief in the same party using a slightly different set of rule mechanisms. Actually, I find it rather interesting. One ...

Hey, sad to hear you've had such severe issues but good to know the mend may be back, even if you're not an item... we'll just rewrite the spell.

Treasures of the Mummy Queen , limited edition T&T solo module. It is quite funny that there's a page-long diatribe from Ken St. Andre (not the author but creator of T&T) on mapping the dungeon (since its a solo, its not usually needed anyway but in case one wants to do it for group play) a...

Re: Listen "skill" fixed for my rules

I use my everyman rules for this. Simply stated, every one gets a d12 and has between 1-4 in 12 for success, based on level. Some races and/or classes may get an additional +1-4. Further there are some magic items that give +4 or more, allowing, if all is maxed, a greater than 12 chance... but there...

Re: Armor Stacking with magic too

Traditionally, extraneous armor bonuses like rings, cloaks, and spells do not add with existing magical armor. They work with nonmagical armor. In the case of a spell which grants armor, it does not work with existing armor of any sort but may still work with "no armor" benefits such as, f...

If I do things like this, I try to keep it culturally related, so that, for example, only the Tine Sallow warriors are known for their use of XXXX and it gives them YYYY. Usually this is for NPCs.

We once had a pack mule who, after surviving various vicious encounters with undead, learned to communicate with the party of their presence. He was a very helpful Eeyore. Re: The ranger's innate class penalties...

My rule of thumb has always been the ranger may use armor that provide an amount of AC equal to their Dexterity adjustment + 2 so if they have a +3 they can wear chain (as it gives +5) without penalty (as the Dexterity has already offset it). Use of armor greater than this results in a 1:1 penalty s...

These may have been corrected in later printings so I'm not sure but one thing I always disliked was, for example, the illusionist and sharp senses requiring a SIEGE check to work. So, sometimes, they had it; many times they did not. Dwarfs did not have to roll a Con check to get their poison resist...

Like others, I have used many different systems. The three with the greatest duration were: 1) On a natural 20, if a 20 was not required, roll again. If you score a hit, triple damage or double on a miss. 2) On a natural 20, if a 20 was not required, deal double damage. 3) On a natural 20, even if i...

One rule I don't agree with and have modified to the point that it doesn't exist (we build our own classes) is the class-and-a-half stuff. I like it conceptually. I feel it adds little XP requirement for too much a reward, unless you add wizard (or arcane caster, I guess, technically) and then you g...
